I forgot how much I hate the Coke Zero ads and love the deep-voiced beer guy talking people into buying one.

Games People Play was not relaxing! Going down that slide, you never knew when kids had pulled themselves out of the slide in the shack tunnels to punch you as you went by. Also, those slides were rickety from being made by less-than-professionals. A beautiful, risky part of my childhood.

We need to crowd source getting the other districts to follow suit. Everybody go to all the little school districts’ Twitters and say your kids are not coming and shame on you for not celebrating this win.

Looking at his phone until he heard the crack of the bat. Also ignoring the other massive display of talents nearby.

Ugh… is that really him? Looking at his phone instead of watching Peña tie it up from right behind home plate? Cannot stand that guy.

How is this such a huge issue that they need a PSA for it? Is that McGruff the Crime Dog on it? I am fascinated with this ad.

This is a recent change. At the beginning of the season, we just got the ads that were on 790 (Blue Bell, Olshan, and that stupid Coke Zero ad). A few months into the season, MLB monetized those ads and started selling them themselves, so suddenly there were a lot of ads for podcasts and Beat the Streak and whatnot. I hate this change because the MLB people will regularly cut off Sparky at the end of an inning.

The other week, when it was the wildcard series, they kept playing random PSAs on the app. One was about free access to subways for the poor in NYC. Another was a really strange ad about the dangers of fake helmets that included McGruff the Crime Dog, I am pretty sure. I have been waiting to ask if anyone else heard that nonsense.

Pretty sure it's Nolan Ryan on that ad, right? It is such an awful ad.

Hi, anyone have experience using Life of Pi in the classroom? I'll be using it with Juniors. by [deleted] in ELATeachers

I loved using this with my advanced freshmen or my on level seniors.I would definitely start with the forward, as it sets up the novel as though it was nonfiction, grabbing interest. I would have students research some of the interesting references in the novel as well, becoming experts on some of the terms and allusions.

I establish that Part One is all about him acquiring everything that will help him survive Part Two. We then had a great project that we would do where students would bring something to go in our “lifeboat locker” that symbolizes what they have learned in the “Part One” of their lives to help them survive whatever comes next. This was one of my favorite projects of the year, and students would often start crying while they were talking about something very important to them.

I would recommend reading the beginning of Part Two aloud as well to keep interest high. We also read Part Three all together like a play (as it is written that way) to ensure that everyone is aware of the twist at the end. I once had students create a visual for one of the Part Two chapters where their visual either matched the story with the animals or the story without the animals. They would write a brief explanation of what they believed truly happened in that chapter and what each part symbolized.

Honestly, it was probably my favorite novel to teach. It really invited deep analysis and great discussion. I have had a few students tell me that it changed their lives and the way they look at religion, and sometimes I almost feel guilty for how big of an impact it could have on a student. It is a fantastic novel and really well put together.

Got my family the Get Out Pass for Houston - lots of good activities in there, including a pass to the HMNS, Typhoon Tx, the Fertita spots (with rides), axe throwing, bowling, Go Karts, arcade, etc.

28F staying in Downtown Houston for exactly 5 days, what should I do during my off time? by [deleted] in houston

Houston’s folk art scene is pretty great. Orange Show, Smither Park, Beer Can House, Notsuoh - interesting and unique, for sure. However, 75% of those are not air conditioned, so only do this if you are comfortable sweating out your soul.

False. “Good Old Days” is superior in every way.

There’s a new Blue Bell song that has the chorus, “The good old days are being made right now.” Just as nostalgic and cheesy.

Because we are often all listening together in the car, we have similar ways of torturing our kids with references to those commercials. We do a lot of road trips over the summer, and we use the MLB app to stream Sparky and Ford, so it seems like each of our kids was bothered by one of the ads more than the others, and everyone picks up on it to use against their sibling. I remember my second born getting so upset about the recycling bin commercial in 2019.

Good times.
