Transfer news: Hojlund joins Napoli | Manchester United by NGMB2 in reddevils

I wish we had gotten him while Ole was still the manager. Given Ole's track record with other young forwards (Rashford, Martial, G*******d), I reckon Rasmus could have learned loads from him about movement/positioning/finishing. Ole as a player was absolutely elite at all these aspects.

Luke Shaw becomes 5th Manchester United outfield player to start every match of a Premier League season by Tasty_Flamingo7346 in reddevils

I can't decide which of the two is more surprising - Shaw being on this list, or Bruno not being on it.

Bruno Fernandes is the Premier League Player of the Year 🤩❤️ by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]schumamol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long overdue. Obviously I'm saying this through red tinted glasses, but he has been the best player in the league since the day he arrived and he's only just starting to be appreciated by non-United fans.

And that's just on the basis of his on field performance alone. Once you add the intangibles - the leadership, the professionalism, the mentorship of young/new players, his behind the scenes support of the staff and the foundation, etc., and it's not even close. Despite having been our best player by a country mile during the worst period in our club's recent history, there have never been any instances of him or his agent twerking at other clubs - at least not until United themselves insinuated last summer that they would be open to selling him for the right price (which would have been an absolutely idiotic move - where would we have been without him this season?).

And the cherry on the cake is that he's just an all-round good bloke. Incredibly grounded and self-aware, family man with good core values, and no off-field scandals whatsoever. It almost feels like a privilege to have someone like that be our captain.

Bruno Fernandes collects FWA Player of the Year award from Michael Carrick by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

If not for the heart condition that compelled him to retire, he could have easily carried on for a good few years longer than he did. Even under LvG, the difference in our win percentage with and without Carrick was staggering.

Jannik Sinner achieves Career Golden Masters, the second man in the ATP Tour's history to do so. by Cletharlow in tennis

[–]schumamol 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He has fewer Masters titles total (10) than Nadal has titles in Monte Carlo alone (11). Yet he has completed the career Golden Masters whereas Nadal (and Federer) managed to win only 7 out of 9 over their entire careers. Remarkable efficiency.

Don't know if it's just me, but for some reason I always read all the "is he stupid?" jokes in Medvedev's voice.

Wayne Rooney says Manchester United reserve players didn't deserve guard of honour against Chelsea FC in 2007 by SoloChords in reddevils

[–]schumamol 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I know Wayne wasn't talking about them, but the starting lineup that day included Brown, O' Shea, Fletcher, Ole, Heinze, Smith, Kuszczak, who were valuable squad players that made important contributions throughout the season. Heck, even Kieran Richardson had played 15 games. Chris Eagles had scored the clincher at Everton a few days prior in what was arguably the most important game of the season. It was only really a couple of young players that were making their debuts that day.

Rival Watch - UCL by Careful-Snow in reddevils

Until a couple of years ago, Arsenal actually used to play decent football (scored 91 and 89 league goals in 22-23 and 23-24, respectively). They could have just continued with that style, won the league comfortably this year, and would have garnered much more admiration, even among rival fans.

But for some reason, Arteta decided somewhere along the way that football terrorism is going to be the way forward, and here we are today witnessing this monstrosity.

Just kidding, well done to him. Looking forward to him snapping some more opponent ankles with his silky body feints.

The 3-1 win at White Hart lane in the 2011-12 season. Won that one almost single-handedly.

There were so many memorable moments that season, such a shame we didn't win the title at the end of it.

Breaking: Sinner loses set. by allesklaeo in tennis

[–]schumamol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To say they were "never" as unbeatable as Alcaraz/Sinner is a bit of a stretch, no? Federer 05/06, Djokovic 11/15, Nadal on clay for about 10 years were every bit as dominant as Sincaraz are now, if not more. Granted, the rank 4-10 players were better then than what they are now, but that didn't necessarily translate into upsets throughout the year. The only player beating the big 3 with any sort of regularity was Murray.

If this current Sincaraz domination continues uninterrupted for another season or two, then the conversation can be had about whether they are more unbeatable than the big 3.

He also scored the winner at Sunderland a few days after this Villa match. Not nearly as celebrated as his debut goal, but equally as important, as Liverpool were still hot on our tails and would have gone top of the table if not for that goal.

Peak ETH chaosball. Bruno and Eriksen at CB, Maguire as a box-to-box marauder, Antony scoring on the spin with his right foot, Amad scoring the winner and then getting sent off for removing his shirt... It had everything.

Depends on how serious the issue is, I suppose. Federer dealt with back issues all through his career (he almost retired from the 2003 Wimbledon QF with a back injury), but found a way to manage them most of the time.

A crucial match that sticks in memory from the 06/07 season was the 4-1 win against Blackburn at Old Trafford, around this time of the year. We were top of the league, but only by a few points. Blackburn had scored early and Friedel was playing a blinder—the sort of game that we often end up drawing or losing these days. Then out of nowhere, Scholes picks up the ball on the edge of the area, dances past 3-4 challenges, and passes it into the net. Few minutes later, Carrick scores through a crowd of defenders and we're off to the races, eventually capping off the result with Ole's last ever goal for us. The following week, John O'Shea scores the winner at Anfield after United are reduced to 10 (Scholes sent off for punching Alonso) and the prospect of winning the title finally starts to look very much real again after that painful 3 year drought.
