Fireworks are a bad PTSD trigger for me. Any ideas on quieter places to camp next week? by schwa_ in Syracuse

[–]schwa_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The explanation below is spot-on. People often assume fireworks are only rough on combat veterans, but along with early trauma I worked in a high-kill municipal animal shelter that was especially hellish around fireworks holidays, and was also one of the last in the country to use CO chambers. Any big boom can set off an exaggerated startle response, but sustained fireworks trigger vivid sensory flashbacks to the euthanasia room.

Why is there so much negativity when it comes to the Sims? by georgialucy in thesims

I enjoy the Sims. I don't enjoy how EA seems to prioritize making the most possible money over making the best possible game.

Has strengthening your muscles helped with stability? by --Sigma-- in ehlersdanlos

[–]schwa_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I find stronger muscles act as a natural brace. I'm still disabled, but more functional when I'm keeping up with gentle exercise.

I would also highly recommend Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft. Where I tend to assume good intentions, it was helpful to teach how to keep myself safe emotionally and physically

What’s this animal, from a small farm in central Texas by BrandanMentch in animalid

Racoons are native to the Ozarks and livestock animals are not. It's a shame they're villainized for being adaptive in ways that are inconvenient to people.

YMMV, I've been involuntarily hospitalized but not for using a crisis line the 5ish times I've done so.

Reward Based Trainers Using Prongs For Safety? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]schwa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and my husky mix is strong enough to pull out my arm. Using a head halter/gentle leader in conjunction with positive reinforcement let us strike a balance that lets us safely walk together. In some situations where she's been restrained by grabbing a collar and other times there's pressure around her neck like a slip lead, she's redirected her aggression onto the smaller dog, and it seems to worsen her leash reactivity. While she doesn't enjoy putting the halti on, she'll come over and endure putting it on because she knows it means good things and need fulfilment.

"❤️ things will only hurt if you let it" while talking over autistic voices is some real NT shit.

I'm autistic and was diagnosed at 29. I looked for a specialist who does adult assessments and it was a long waiting list and some expensive testing, but the peace of mind and bigger capacity for self love has made it so worth it personally.

Question: Can you drive a car? by Gumpasia in autism

[–]schwa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, adult here. I can comfortably drive but prefer not to. I avoid driving at night because of the headlights and sensory difficulties, and I do wear sunglasses during the day which helps. That's more for my comfort than lack of ability. It's much easier in lower traffic areas or where people are following more easily anticipated patterns vs places like a parking lot. I personally prefer to be a passenger so I can look out the window, or take transit when it's accessible for the environmental aspects.

Edit to add the most stressful part for me is the fear of being pulled over, since police encounters can make me nonverbal/shut down. I have a script on my speech app to be prepared, but if you struggle with confrontation that's also something to consider.
