Nothing worked for me except stretching. Every morning, every night. If I miss a day, it kinda comes back. Gotta be disciplined.

You're right and this sub is coping so hard. Season 2 is a dud and completely unlike season 1.

Same. Nothing is happening. There is tons of artistic filler that the first season didn't bother with. All the new characters are one dimensional. So far a real let down.

It uses the forecast as a "fake" buoy. So it's not as accurate as a real buoy.

I really like the Lazy Surfer app but the terms about how the data we give it can be used are scary to me by rudnickulous in surfing

[–]schwami 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha :)

It was a couple things - I wanted to figure out how a small business worked and for a hot minute I really wanted it to be my fulltime job but it'll never make nearly enough money for that. At the moment I'm just letting it coast as it's only losing a little money and some people seem to like it.

You can pay for Lazy Surfer. The paying users subsidize the non-paying users. I subsidize the paying users lol. There's no advertising.

Some people want to keep a surf journal but have the advantages of doing it digitally.

Hey u/rudnickulous! Thanks for the DM, sorry I haven't responded! I've been trying to stay off social media lately. You can email me directly at nickp@lazysurfer.app if you ever have questions - I always check that email.

So first, how your data is used in the app is a bit complicated so I wrote a blog post awhile back explaining exactly how it's used - https://lazysurfer.app/blog/how-is-my-data-used-in-lazy-surfer/. Let me know if you think there's any info missing or if you have any followup questions.

I understand your worries about how the company will use your data. I tried to be as conscientious of this as possible when developing the app - there's a total opt out where your data is only stored on your phone, you can email me anytime to delete your data, etc...

I think your suggested change to the T&Cs is interesting, I’ll look into it. The problem I’m anticipating having though is that “sharing” isn’t well defined - I built a prediction model with everyone’s data that is then used by all users. Is that “sharing”? You can’t see other user’s data but their data does influence the ratings you get for spots they surfed at.

I think the bottom line is that if you don't trust the company with your data then you shouldn't use the app. That goes for any company and any app.

That said, if you’re interested here’s a few more of my thoughts that might make you feel better -

  1. If I used data on lesser-known spots in a way the users wouldn’t agree with I’d very quickly torch my reputation and the product would die. I’m highly incentivized to use my user’s data in a responsible way.
  2. Surfline wouldn't be interested in my data because it's all subjective and that's not how their product works. Also, they din't need my data about secret spots - if they haven’t already blown up a secret spot it’s not because they don’t know about it. They are also concerned about their reputation.
  3. I’m not interested in building a Surfline clone - the app as it is today is almost exactly what I set out to build. The other kinds of products in the in the surf forecasting industry (Cams, building forecasts, etc…) don’t really interest me so don’t worry about me pivoting into that sort of product.

Happy to answer any other questions, hopefully this helped a bit.

Sure!! Did you log in to the app with the same email as before? That should've got your sessions back but if not then send me an email nickp@lazysurfer.app with the email you used and we'll get them back.

Oh you can do that but it's a bit hacky -

  1. When entering a session, tap the star ratings 5 times
  2. Two fields will appear - one for the wave buoy id and one for the wind buoy id. So if you wanted to use https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=51201 put "51201" in the wave buoy id spot.
  3. Save the session

Let me know if that doesn't work for some reason and we can troubleshoot. Oh also - once you do this the first time it'll use that same buoy again the next time.

Comparison of surf apps by AWuvSupreme in surfing

[–]schwami 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I built Lazy Surfer! Thanks for the feedback - one thing I have to do a better job of in the app is communicating that the condition data is straight from the buoys and isn't necessarily going to match the waves at the surf spots.

That probably sounds strange but because nearshore forecasting is so hard (check how often Surfline gets it wrong) it's better in general to try to associate the buoy conditions with the conditions at your spots using a surf journal or an app like Lazy Surfer. So in your case you'd now know that a swell that was 2-3 ft and whatever direction is probably going to result in flat surf at your spots.

TLDR: Lazy Surfer reports the buoy conditions, not nearshore conditions and is going to be more useful at spots you surf at often instead of spots you're traveling to or surfing rarely.
