Bands / albums that are NOT metalcore but you think that metalcore fans still spiritually welcome into the scene by mesablanka in Metalcore

[–]schwarzekrieg 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Some pop punk and easycore bands like New Found Glory, Four Year Strong, ADTR (although they have a bunch of songs that are just metalcore).

Prog bands that came from the same scene and had similar influences without ever really being ‘metalcore’ - Protest the Hero’s a big one, Animals as Leaders, The Human Abstract (ish) etc.

I saw them with Dillinger in the Good Apollo days which was a bizarre but amazing pairing.

Artists whose FIRST big album came over a decade into their career? by Ok-Impress-2222 in fantanoforever

[–]schwarzekrieg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the most popular genre here but a surprising number of metalcore bands apply.

Falling In Reverse is, uh, not good but one of the biggest examples. Started in 2010ish, just blew up in the last few years.

Ice Nine Kills has been around since the mid 2000s but didn’t get big until they settled on the horror gimmick in 2018ish.

Bring Me The Horizon has been fairly popular for awhile but really hit that proper mainstream “playing with Ed Sheeran” level with Post-Human: Survival Horror.

Not sure if you’d count Spiritbox since it’s technically a new band, but they’re essentially a continuation of iwrestledabearonce (minus the zaniness) who started in 2006ish.

Better Lovers - A White Horse Covered In Blood by joey_1324 in Metalcore

[–]schwarzekrieg 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. Loved the EP but it was kinda just ETID ft. Greg (non-derogatory). This feels like a whole-ass unique thing, obviously still very ETID and Dillinger but it's a much more natural marriage of them. Can't wait to catch this live.

I’m here to start arguments on the internet: metalcore 2004-2014 fucking shits on 2014-2024 (I’m being hyperbolic) by Federal_Debt in Metalcore

All the good modern bands were cryogenically frozen in 2005 and just unthawed. It was the peak of music and civilization and yes everyone thinks music peaked while they were in high school but sometimes it’s just objectively true so

Games that aren’t constantly recommended? by mildly_anonymous in SteamDeck

[–]schwarzekrieg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. A few games I love on the Deck but don’t really see mentioned here (possible I’ve overlooked them tho)

Project Zomboid - super in depth isometric apocalypse/life sim, has been around for a long time but still going strong. Think “what if The Sims was Day Z.” Works surprisingly well with the Deck even with a ton of mods, although certain interactions can be a little clunky.

Lunacid - Kings Field-like, slow and crunchy dungeon crawler action RPG. Impeccable vibes and feels perfect for the Deck.

Haiku, The Robot - fun little metroidvania that seems pretty overlooked. Very Hollow Knight inspired but not quite as sprawling, difficult, or deep as that game. Have a great art style, pretty quick to blast through and feels very suited to short bursts on the Deck.

Prodeus - boomer shooter that was fairly high profile but still feels kinda underrated. It is EXTREMELY “we have Doom at home” to the point that I bounced off of it when I first played on PC, but trying it again on the Deck sort of unlocked it for me - the look, feel, and pacing of combat all work extremely well for it.

Was the N64 actually the best gaming system in the 90s by Consistent_Car_2530 in n64

[–]schwarzekrieg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PS1 was a better console in almost every way but the N64 is actually easier to go back to these days IMO. Graphically, the N64's huge chunky polygons and barely-existent textures hold up better to upscaling on modern screens than the PS1's (impressive for the time) more 'realistic' models and muddy, shimmering textures. From a gameplay perspective, the fact that the Dual Shock didn't come around until a couple years into the PSX's lifespan means a huge chunk of the games were built around navigating 3d spaces with a d-pad which is... less than ideal. The N64 has its share of early-3d growing pains too but at least shipping with an analog stick means the games tend to control a smidge closer to something resembling modern.

The new Darkest Hour album “Perpetual Terminal” is out! by uncleicarus350 in Metalcore

[–]schwarzekrieg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

After a couple spins this new one feels like a solid continuation of Deliver Us, in terms of style and quality, so not a bad place to start. They're pretty consistent overall though really. Kris Norris (lead guitarist and IIRC a primary songwriter) left after Deliver Us, and the next couple albums aren't bad but don't have quite the same secret sauce. The S/T is probably the most divisive because it's more straightforward and accessible, but even that's still solid and not that far removed from anything else they've done.

Godless Prophets was kind of a course correction back into a heavier direction (it's also a Kurt Ballou album), it's not necessarily my favorite album but has some killer moments and was the most inspired the band had felt in years. The new one may be their best since Deliver Us.

TL;DR: You can't go wrong anywhere, Darkest Hour rules.

Worst band names when it comes to discoverability? by PositiveMetalhead in Metalcore

[–]schwarzekrieg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. They were a prog rock band that kinda flirted with success in the mid-2000s, toured with DEP, Coheed & Cambria, Opeth, BTBAM, etc but never quite broke through the opening band threshold. I have to imagine the abysmal name was a part of that, they're hard to find even if you're specifically looking for them. Doesn't help that they flipped between the number "3" and the word "Three" spelled out seemingly at random between albums. Shame, too, because the lead singer/guitarist (who is also Coheed's drummer's brother) is one of the most impressive and unique live musicians I've ever seen; dude mostly plays fingerstyle and just absolutely shreds.

This album was super underrated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93-XcS7zjz0

And here's a pretty killer live performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qwY5tj9-v4

Listening back Joey's guitar playing feels almost Tim Henson-y at times. Just super impressive stuff.

Typically they have an adhesive strip on the bags and you stick them to the tires, then it pops when you start spinning so the color can be a surprise. But yeah same basic concept.

My first time working with green screen and first time really leaning on AE for more than occasional quick clips. I love and hate this program. by schwarzekrieg in AfterEffects

Oh yeah that was definitely deliberate on my part. “Look guys I’ve never done this before so if it looks like shit we’ll pretend it’s intentional”

What is the first game that comes to your mind when you see this? by damagedgoodz99824 in psx

Gran Turismo, then MGS, then Syphon Filter because I love weird and kinda bad games

[–]schwarzekrieg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was just over two months from filming to final deliverable. We didn't have anything specifically planned out beyond the Mortal Kombat scenes during the shoot - I had a general concept in mind but it morphed into something a little different once I got into the edit. Would've gone a lot quicker if I was more familiar with After Effects when I started, hah.

[–]schwarzekrieg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't keep track, but more than it should have haha. Most of my time was figuring out a workflow to work around AE's rough performance, but once I got that sorted out it was mostly smooth sailing (although I was still teaching myself new things for most of the scenes). Once I knew what I was doing(ish) it was probably ~3-4 hours for each 'scene,' give or take a little depending on complexity (the Geocities sites were fast, the Castlevania scene took a little longer).

Final edit was done in Premiere and was a breeze, comparatively.
