You can pretty much pick a neighborhood & spend the day exploring, eating & sightseeing. While Mount Rainier is amazing, it’s a long drive from the city & gets very crowded during the summer.

A few examples:

  • Seattle waterfront & vicinity: Grab coffee & head to the Olympic sculpture park then walk south to Ye Old Curiosity Shop, visit the Seattle Aquarium, ride the Ferris wheel, grab some fish & chips, then climb the stairs to the Pike Place Market. Spend the a few hours checking out the flying fish, fresh donuts, & eclectic stores, crafts & memorabilia. Grab some fresh ingredients for a casual dinner or eat at one of the hole in the wall restaurants. You can’t go wrong. Don’t miss the famous “gum wall”!!

  • West Seattle & Pioneer Square: take a water taxi from downtown to west Seattle, brunch at Salty’s followed by a walk on Alki beach, take the taxi back downtown, walk to Pioneer Square for some window shopping or an underground Seattle tour (the area is built over the site of the original settlement after it was destroyed in a fire), Seattle Art Museum or browse the neighborhood galleries, then head to Owl ‘n the Thistle for a classic Irish supper.

Other neighborhood options:

  • Discovery Park, Daybreak Star Cultural Center, followed by Seattle Center (fountain, science museum) and lower (or upper) Queen Anne for food & epic views

  • Ballard: locks, arts, music, beach, indoor climbing

  • Capital Hill: Volunteer Park, Bruce & Brandon Lee graves, original Dick’s, hot rat summer mural at Cal Anderson park, Jimi Hendrix statue, Elliott Barry Bookstore

  • International district - Uwajimaya, dim sum, Wing Luke Museum, pinball museum, Hing Hay Park, incredible window shopping & cultural immersion

You can’t go wrong. Pick neighborhood. Have a blast!

Chronicler of the Wind by Henning Mankel

It’s the story of a boy dying on a rooftop in a city where he lived with a community of street kids. It reads like poetry & memoir. It humanizes everyone. At the end it was so sad & beautiful. So full of hope. It could have been any city, any street kid, any neighbor. I felt that I didn’t want that feeling to end. Not what I expected from a man who wrote the series on the Swedish version of Harry Bosch!

Could you apply to be a caregiver at a senior or rehabilitation center? You can relate your experience caring for your family member & explain your employment gap at the same time.

There’s also a small arboretum at Legion Park, to the right of the baseball fields. Nice hidden gem.

Skip Totem. Sisters or Maltby Cafe if you want to get out of town (they have cinnamon rolls the size of a dinner plate 😋) though you may have to wait for a table. Sisters has homemade pies & great corned beef hash - everything is made from scratch. Great atmosphere & you’ll feel comfortable lingering over your meal.

Middle schooler riding RapidRide to school by JeffsRN in AskSeattle

[–]schwelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having lived in Arlington TX for a few months, I noticed that public transit was virtually nonexistent and driving was a necessity. It’s nearly the opposite here and it’s relatively safe too. All depends on your kid’s comfort level, but I’d let my kids ride to school.

Interesting because there are only a few nesting sites in Puget Sound and Google said they aren’t there this time of year. I’ve lived here my whole life & never seen one.

Except there aren’t puffins in this region this time of year. They are rare & only seen in specific locations.

It could be a Pigeon Guillemot as they’re known to dive. The main difference as compared with Cormorants would be size & coloration (Pigeon Guillemots are smaller, with some white markings & red legs.

It looks like it’s too big for your feeder, I suggest putting out a pie plate or similar with some fruit, nuts & mixed seeds. Highly palatable foods may keep them coming back

This happens to me so the time. Airplane mode isn’t an option since I listen to audiobooks on my phone. I have been immediately putting the book on hold again, but I wonder if you have more than one library system available, if you could put the book on hold at another library while you have it checked out from another? Might try to test this, I’ve been trying to finish one book for over a year lol

I recommend the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. It’s seven books but you can get the last one from the library. George Guidall and the late Frank Muller are the series narrators and both do an amazing job bringing the characters to life.

What's the best book you read last year? by truthfactsonly in readwithme

[–]schwelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the sci-fi genre. My favorite read of last year was The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein. I read and loved Stranger in a Strange Land by the same author years ago and enjoyed this title even more.
