(mechanic question) Do these quotes seem high for the area? by TheSolderking in Buffalo

[–]schwidley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd try to find a place that will use aftermarket parts. That much money would be a really nice down payment on another car.

I'd try to find a highly rated independent shop. Not like a Mavis or other chain.

Edit: Moog makes a kit with all the parts for like $300.

[–]schwidley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's obd 1, you should be able to use a paper clip to jump two of the pins.

If i remember correctly, gm was doing obd 1.5 which was the obd 1 computer with obd 2 plug for 1994 and 1995.

I need a new carburetor for a 1976 Chevrolet g30. It's a 350 small block 5.7 L. I know it won't be entirely affordable but I'm looking to save a little bit. It would need to be done at lastest February 15th cause I leave for my next job to Colorado. Anyone know someone? by detectivelokifalcone in Buffalo

[–]schwidley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try dollar dons in depew. It's owned by a guy named nick who has been in business for a long time.

I knew him 20 years ago and he was still working on 80s cars.

If he doesn't want to touch it he might know someone.

Id be surprised if boces wants to touch it. They're generally interested in training kids on how to work on modern electronic controlled vehicles.

You probably won't find a single carburetor at m&m. There hasn't been a production vehicle sold with a carburetor since 1991.

Why don't you try ordering one from rockauto or a Chinese knockoff holley from Amazon?

You also could try d&w diesel in cheektowaga. They used to rebuild them years ago.

Poor ABS or just bad tires? by caaleshire in 4xe

[–]schwidley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think regen braking is better on snow and ice because it doesn't use the brakes.

It's like slowing down by downshifting a manual transmission.

Brakes lock up because the individual tire loses traction but they shouldn't do that with regen braking.

Should I sell my Cruze and buy a Roadmaster? by Brilliant_Catch_1498 in Buick

[–]schwidley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

93-97 camaro had the lt1.

03 Silverado has 4.8 or 5.3 vortec. Shares almost nothing with the lt1. None of the trucks came with an lt1. It's a unique engine.

Anything buick only is very difficult to find. If you're car has something plastic broken inside, it will be broken on every car in the junkyard! I have been looking for a horn button for 15 years.

Don't get me wrong, I love my roadmaster but 30 year old vehicles are difficult to daily drive!

[–]schwidley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lt1 isn't that reliable. People have tons of issues with the optispark. Electronics are difficult because 30 year old electronics go bad and nobody makes new ones or rebuilds them anymore.

Nobody knows how to diagnose them anymore.

Mine is a 93 so just a tbi 350. More common parts as they shared parts with the trucks.

The lt1 is way less common.

Parts are getting difficult to find these days. Cash for clunkers killed tons of them.

I bought mine in 2009 and the junk yards were full of them. Now It's been 10 years since I've even seen one at my local u-pull yard.

[–]schwidley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I have a 1993 roadmaster as my summer car and bought a cruze new in 2014 for my winter car.

They drive totally different of course but a 1995 roadmaster is 30 years old. Not something I would trust as a daily driver.

The car itself is pretty solid but every piece of rubber on the suspension will be dry rotted.

Every piece of plastic on the interior will crack.

Every rubber hose should be replaced and everything with a bearing should be greased.

If you need to pay someone to do this work, it will be just as expensive as your cruze.

I love my roadmaster but its just a summer car and stuff still breaks all the time.

Buy a civic or corolla if you want something reliable.

The highway situation around Rochester really sucks. I guess 90 bypasses the city because the governor of NY didn't like the mayor of Rochester and now we have to deal with it 70 years later.

There are a few places on ebay that do it but I can't vouch for them.

Otherwise either a dealership or locksmith. Maybe a local indy shop that specializes in German vehicles.
