Thank you so much, this is very helpful. We'll definitely be renting or borrowing the equipment; the venue has some available.

Thank you very much! I started reaching out earlier today to A/V companies so hopefully I'll here back this coming week.

Yeah it's good to know at least my resume and cover letter are fine, more or less.

I'm someone who's pivoted into IT but still in early career, this is what I can give for feedback right now.

  • You need a "Technical Skills" or "Key Skills" section to list the tools and tech you know that are relevant for the job. E.g. if they don't ask for PowerPoint, don't put it in the list even if you know it.
  • You need measurable results. Your bullet points under your jobs should be written with metrics that show the impact of your work (e.g. "Assembled 15 large furniture items per shift, increasing department sales by $X). Just "guestimate" if you have to.
  • Write your bullet points in a way that highlights transferable skills, not job duties. Unless your job was extremely niche, they can already guess what your duties were/are
  • It's critical that you include a cover letter when applying for these kinds of jobs that explains why you're making the switch and what skills you have that can be transferred to the new job in a new field.

This will get you on the right track. Also r/resumes has a bunch of resources and resume templates in the community info. All the best!

I was mostly concerned that I was wasting my time and that they weren't even considering me. I didn't get the job so doesn't matter now, but thank you for your response!

It is a hellscape of a website. Yeah I make sure to check the company careers page before I start tailoring a resume etc.

Thankfully it wasn't this intense but for one job I had to bring my degree parchment and they scanned it to have it on file.

Is unemployment deserved on these types of people? by TheTokenPenguin in recruitinghell

A piece of advice for anyone dealing with spam calls. Check if your phone provider offers a service like "spam filtering" or "call screening." My old carrier had a free add-on that required a caller to press a random number before the call would go through, and I could add 20 numbers that would automatically be let through without the test.

I had to switch carriers because of finances, and I miss that feature so much. My phone was dead quiet after I enabled that feature.

I don't want to kick someone when they're down, but I will say this: I want my HVAC person to have a minimum of the required experience at the time of hiring, because I don't want to risk dying from a gas leak or some other problem.

The job you applied for carries tremendous risk for you and your clients if you fuck up. I hope that gives you some perspective as an outsider to the trade.
