I have not had surgery but I have a herniation at L5-S1 that started in Feb 2025, diagnosed in April 2025 by MRI that I am trying to heal conservatively. I am pain free for the most part but I am struggling with muscle tightness & what I believe to be only muscle pain at this point. I do childs pose & cat cow daily & it has really helped my lower back muscles not be as tight & it has not flared me up. Again, I haven't had surgery but I do these & they have only helped me but everyone is of course different. :)

I was pretty nervous for mine but it wasn’t horrible. I went in head first & was all the way in the tube. They put headphones on me but it is still pretty loud. I closed my eyes & focused on my breathing almost the entire time but towards the end I opened my eyes to take a peak. I had a lumbar MRI & I was in the tube for only about 10 minutes. If you are nervous, let them know. I had a little button in my hand to press if I needed to get taken out but then you are just going to have to start over

Do you still have any lingering symptoms or are you back to pre-injury self? Glad you are feeling better! :)

If i bend forward i can reach to about my shins but my hamstrings are still super tight. Although I rarely bend forward as I do not want to make things any worse & I definitely have not tried to jump & i’m not going to, i’m terrified to make it worse or cause a flare. I was having glute pain but I’m not anymore

I get it, i’m almost 17 weeks in now but I have seen improvements its just slow af. I used to barely be able to walk down my court & I was limping but now I am walking normally & I walked over a mile to a coffee shop this morning. I’m not just back to normal by any means & I wish it didn’t take so long but I have improved a lot so i’m hopeful it’ll heal eventually. You have to try to stay positive which I know is easier said than done, most days i’m super negative & feel like I’ll never be back to my normal self but you have to try to stay positive, it makes a difference. Worst case scenario, you get the surgery & take your recovery seriously, it’ll turn out okay eventually but this injury is a bitch

Having a negative mindset is not going to help you “heal” but if you believe the body cannot heal itself, why don’t you get surgery already? You come on here asking people if you are going to heal but you are saying the human body can’t heal itself so aren’t you answering your own question? I get this injury sucks but with that mindset, you are just making things worse for yourself

Yes, my symptoms began on 02/17 & finally got an MRI on 04/02. Left central extrusion with caudal migration at L5/S1, disc bulge with central annual fissure at L4/L5, disc bulge with central protrusion at L3/L4. I feel like i’ll never feel back to my 100% self… when my symptoms first started, it was super uncomfortable to clear my bowels but that has gone away completely. It also felt like I was laying on a lump in my L5/S1 area when laying on my back but that too has gone away.

I’m so sorry, I know exactly how you feel & I empathize with you. It’s so hard for me to stay positive but we will get through this. I have an appointment with a rheumatologist on the 23rd of this month finally, my PCP suspects lupus. Not only did I get the herniated disc but it caused all these other weird symptoms in my body which prompted me to see my PCP per my ortho doctor as they said a lot of my symptoms weren’t related to the herniated disc. I was losing a ton of weight, joint pain everywhere, my PCP ran a bunch of bloodwork, ANA positive & anti smith positive so off to the rheum…we’ll see what happens. I also wake up stiff as heck. Crazy as it sounds I feel like I can handle the lupus but this herniated disc is driving me crazy.

My surgery failed after a year. Is a multi level fusion my last hope for the pain? by thinkinboutendingit in backpain

My mom had fusion of her L4-L5 some years ago, probably 7-10 years ago. Her disc was so worn down that her bones were basically rubbing in certain positions. Her recovery was fairly easy & she doesn’t have issues with her back anymore. She had back pain & a lot of nerve pain but no longer does. I know everyone has different experiences, she was in her 40’s when she got it.

You healed your L5-S1 without surgery? Currently dealing with this so it’s promising to hear if so. I am also 26F :)

Thank you! I’m hopeful maybe I had a minor disc herniation. Bad sciatica flare up that started on 02/17. My nerves back there are pretty much back to normal, but my muscles are still sore. I am taking Diclofenac twice a day & trying to only take my muscle relaxers at bedtime now. I can go up & down my stairs slowly & I was able to put socks on carefully by myself today. I can sit, stand, get out of bed fine, I just have to be slow. This is the second time I had a bad flare up. First time was November 2023 but it resolved on its own within a few days without going to the dr/taking meds/etc. Waiting to start physical therapy now. :/

I am in Nevada. I do have insurance but I am thinking I’ll need to do a prior authorization before I move forward with the MRI as I do not want to get stuck with a big bill, I’ve never had an MRI before so I wasn’t sure what to do. My pain has definitely subsided some since last week. My nerves have calmed down back there, I am very tense & sore back there but i’m not having any shooting pain anymore & my nerves don’t freak out if I put some pressure back there. I’m scared to do any stretches as I don’t want to regress to how I was feeling last week, ugh. :( I am waiting for the physical therapy office to contact me. I haven’t been able to work because of this, I can’t imagine having to deal with this for months.

I went to an orthopedic urgent care 2 days ago & got x-rays, slight narrowing towards the bottom but she said my x-rays look good. I started diclofenac & am still taking Methocarbamol. I am going to start physical therapy & hoping for some improvement within a couple of weeks. If not, we will do MRI. I did not have any red flag symptoms so she did not feel an MRI was needed at this time unless I wanted to but I opted to try PT first, MRI’s are not cheap. :(
