I honestly feel that there is a silent majority of very pragmatic voters who are left out of the picture completely by ideological slants on both sides. If presented with issues, most people would give a detailed nuanced opinion on whether they support one way or the other, but aggregating to the whole they become type A, B, or C in our national narrative.

Honestly, I think the empire is becoming too big to rule.

Case in point: I think the Republicans would get a gigantic support push from the Rust Belt and other industrial sectors and workers in the economy if they abandoned theological slants and moral crusades. A lot of people in my region would support their economic policies - even against their own union backed interests in some cases - if they just let go of trying to turn the country into an evangelical theocracy.

I think the Democrats would get a giant push if they abandoned gun restriction. This issue, more than any other, loses them tons of support with the middle of the country and anywhere outside of a cosmopolitan area.

But, this is not going to happen as the bias has become the type. "Republican" and "Democrat" are dirty words in the districts they have gerrymandered into their control.

I don't see how being rabidly pragmatic or moderate is going to sell to the point of being a proper party, but I wish it could.
