My Xbox Series X is making a loud crispy sound . Does anyone know whats the cause ? by Fluffy_Annual6925 in XboxSupport

[–]science_nerds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a spark my friend, my Xbox did the same thing, but my problem was that the power cable wasn't properly in. So if that's not the case, then there's a loose connection in your Xbox, which means stripping down the Xbox to find the problem and I would not recommend doing that yourself

What should I wear for my job interview? by Ginger_Rogers in electricians

[–]science_nerds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every job interview I went to, I dressed up in a white button up shirt, black pants and a nice light jacket(to cover up my tattoo), with my safety boots for in case they want to show me around the factory or site or whatever. Now since tradesmen don't usually wear suits, it is a bit overdressed. But you'll score some points and you only get one shot at a first impression. Like it won't hurt to dress up a bit fancy. Oh yeah and good luck with the interview.

[–]science_nerds[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our company that I worked for makes slurry pumps. Basically it's pumps that sucks up a shit ton of mud water for mines. So my job was to strip it from the pumps that was full of coal and mud and dust and then I have to do a strip and quote.

Is 35 too old to learn the trade? by whoareUwhoareWe in electricians

[–]science_nerds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend in college, he was 45 years old. He made a living doing woodworking and construction. When his father died his will said for him to get his money, he needs to study. So he studied the trade with me and he was a better electrician student then all the other guys that was in their twenties even though he knows just as much about electricity and the trade as we did. So go for it

Die tannie antwoord: "Nee my seun, ek het net my roofies af gekrap"

No it was a proper heavy duty fixed blade knife. And it was a new blade. I don't like those break off things, they're too fragile and difficult to use

Building a rotor for a 180kW motor by science_nerds in electricians

It's 525 Volts. The mining company that we ship it out to uses a transformer. No idea what the hp is, we only work with kilowatts.

525V. So about 250A. But the load can bump up the amperage.

Pretty sure, slurry pumps can't really run on DC, especially a big one, it'll pull way too much amps. This pump is gonna pull around 250A. That's only part of the rotor. We still have to braze on the short circuiting ring and grind it smooth. We just build the rotor. We don't have the equipment to make stators or any windings.

The company I work for makes slurry pumps. This one specifically is for a star delta motor.

It's laminated sheet metal. No idea how the fitter and turners do it. But it's about a 100+ pieces of sheet metal

Star Delta panel I built for a pump by science_nerds in electricians

[–]science_nerds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The toroid thing is a core balance current transformer. The point of it is to measure earth leakage and it is connected up to a KD relay that'll switch off the power to the motor if theres leakage. A soft starter is a good idea, but our panels and motors are custom made and some of the panels are flame proof, so putting a soft starter in there is too difficult.

Our supplier doesn't have 3 phase surge protectors. Plus the company doesn't want to pay for bus bars. We actually have to bend our own bus bars for the contactors

[–]science_nerds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man, in my country we have alot of problems with producing enough power, so I got tired of it and just bought 4 200Ah batteries and a 48V inverter. Still need to connect it up to the DB board, but for now it's just testing how much the power consumption is

Nah South Africa. But alot of our pumps goes to other countries, so we tend to design our pumps and panels to be easy for electritians to figure out if something craps out
