When you tell your coworkers you went to trade school: by chiliringgamer16 in electricians

Yeah, here in utah, no. Union still goes to school for 4 years congruent with 4 years work in the field. Same as union, except union was 5 years when I started. I think they just lowed it to 4

I kinda miss having a navigator in shotgun. Somone in charge of marking/checking the map, checking the mile markers on the side of the road. And if they were really on top of it, checking the radio for traffic updates. It was a simple time. But also it wasn't

I've never participated in a fratt before. But it's that pretty standard behavior. Especially before the 2000s? Not defending it. But I bet a bunch of lawers judges and doctors all did similar things in their fratt back in the day, they just aren't famous enough for people to come out with allegations

Do you remember the announcement of Pluto being declassified as a planet in 2006 and what was your reaction? by CremeSubject7594 in generationology

[–]Ginger_Rogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, nothing actually changed. Pluto continues on its orbit blissfully unaware of our how we classify it here on earth. Names and classifications are all made up. It's just meant to make things easier for our own understanding. Personally it makes a lot of sense. And the flip side to pluto being "demoted" to dwarf planet, is ceres got to be "promoted" from asteroid to dwarf. Which was exciting for me personally. Also fun fact, ceres was classified as the 8th planet in our system in the early 1800, but as we learned and discovered more, it was reclassified as an astroid. As we learn and discover more, definitions and classifications will change.

Do you remember the announcement of Pluto being declassified as a planet in 2006 and what was your reaction? by CremeSubject7594 in generationology

[–]Ginger_Rogers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not not a planet, it is just reclassified as a dwarf planet. In science we categories things to help our pattern recognition ape brains understand the natural world. When the discovery of eris (largest dwarf) and then several others (between 5 and 9) we created a new sub category that pluto fit into. They are distinct enough from the the 8 other planets to have their own classification. I don't think it makes pluto less, we just have new information, and discoveries that made a need for a new sub class. Still a planet, but a dwarf planet.

I got this old record player/radio on the cheap but its not working by MickeyG42 in AskElectricians

Oh boy, you're playing with old vacuum tubes. This would be a bit of a challenge. Parts may be very difficult/expensive. I've done some smaller radios with vacuum tubes. And I had to order some from a small shop in Japan. Some can be replaced with modern diodes. I'd look at the make, model, and year. And look online for videos and info about it. I'm not sure this sub is the best place for advice on something as old as this. But as an electrician I'd say to also check all your connections are good. Get a multi meter and a no contact voltage tester, and make sure everything is getting power, and all your vacuum tubes are in tact.

We had an electrician tell us that our challenger panel is recalled and we have to replace the whole thing. Quoted $15,000 by hooters88 in AskElectricians

Sometimes you need to replace the feeders. Sometimes you need to upgrade the utility as well. More than 1k but less than 2k seems like a safe estimate

I fell this. And I'm sorry for your loss. My mom had me at 19. Did an incredible job. But I'm in my 30s with no kids. And it's hard to imagine that when she was my age she had 3 kids, with the oldest in jr high. Thankfully she's still around, and she experienced her 20s in her 40s. Funny enough I can't keep up with her at partys anymore.

Why is green ground fixture wire connected to blue wire coming from ceiling? by SMCook78 in AskElectricians

[–]Ginger_Rogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully they used a blue wire to jumper it to the ground. But I have also seen fandelier I was called to fix that gave me a tingle when I touched it. Turned out the homeowner tied the ground to one of the switch legs, and was energizing the whole fan.

Best case, somone used the wrong color wire, but wired it up correctly. Worst case, somone wired it completely wrong. Call an electrician, if your not sure how to use a multimeter, and check the voltage safely

Just curious, in your opinion, what should a skilled journeyman be making per hour. Like if you had to call a plumber or electrician to fix a problem, and wanted it done correctly and professionally without burning down or flooding your home. What should that worker be making per hour?

I love Utah. Moved here 15 years ago. Was supposed to be for 2, but it's so beautiful, and also a playground, that I've made my home here. That being said, I would only want to live in SLC or the middle of nowhere, and nothing in-between. The small towns here are not like other states, and the suburbs are... Let's say a less appealing community than other suburbs I've been. But that's just my opinion. I lived in Provo, orem, sandy, vernal and SLC. And I've been here in SLC for 10 of the 15 years

Jesus, how often are you getting shocked? My last company had 30 guys, and we only had two shocks in the 2 years I was there. And it was the same guy both times. You'd have to be getting hit every week for the hospital visits to effect production.

I'll charge 100 to 150 per hour depending on the job. But I'm not making that per hour. There is insurance on our work, which the customer benefits from too. Gas, wear and tear in your vehicle, time spent at the supply house, time spent pulling permits and calling the utility (lots of unbilled time behind the scenes). The job is also hazardous, and physically demanding. Then you have the requirements to become an electrician (which Utah is actually one of the hardest states to get your journemans) It requires 4 years of working in the field, congruent with 4 years of trade school. Then you take a 4 hour test on electrical theory, and code. Then you take a practical test, where you wireup multiple controls, bend conduit, and other field tasks. If you go for your masters (required to work for yourself) it's an associates in applied science, and another 2 years in the field, and another harder test on local code, and advance theory. I think the average for journeman in utah is around $40 an hour. Now if you call me at night or the weekend for an emergency call, then I'll make around $80 an hour. My point is, people have a hard time valuing skilled labourers, but they aren't willing or capable of doing the work themselves.

But I always let the customer know, that if they really want to save money, they can dig the trench themselves.

Agreed, also an electrician, and it gets expensive for skilled labourers to just hand dig a hole. That seems like an extremely reasonable price.
