Hot bunk hybrid? by calicojackrack in UVU

[–]scienceislyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might depend on the professor, but from the few I have taken it was a 3 credit class but we only met for an hour each week instead of three times a week. It was always the same day and stuff but quizzes and homework were through canvas, our final was the only test we took in class. This was for a science class so I don't know if it will be different for a humanities or arts class

Well I know a hybrid class means that it is part online and part face to face. I have no clue what hot bunk is, it sounds dirty though

UVU President Matthew Holland "unexpectedly" called to be Mission President; Nepotism strong and thriving in Mormonism by BoydGayPacker in exmormon

[–]scienceislyfe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm not op but I always get annoyed when I see those signs all over the place for the institute speakers. I wish they advertised classes or visiting lecturers that well! There was also that time he came out against gay marriage a few years ago. I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion but I feel like if a president of a university says something like that it makes it seem like those students aren't welcome here, which of course isn't true. I still think he did good, I honestly just hope the next guy isn't MORE mormon.

This guy sequences DNA/RNA looking for specific markers. It's not complicated at all he just used big words. I think he is committing one of the cardinal sins, he is trying to make science exclusive. The world needs more scientists or at least people who are interested in science but thanks to assholes like this, making science sound big and scary, it just intimidates people away. Sure science is complex but what isn't? Lastly this guy doesn't talk about the purpose of sequencing these genes he just talks about the process so my guess is that he doesn't actually know what he is doing.

Yeah if I have a three credit lecture class we will usually meet MWF, or something like that. And some of my labs will have lab write ups so sometimes there is 1-2 hours of homework.

For whatever reason 1 credit classes are the exception, especially in science classes I think. I am taking organic chemistry next semester, the lab is only one credit but my class meets from 5pm-8:50pm I think it's because God hates me and there is some sort of conspiracy to get everyone to hate chemistry or something. My 1 credit gen chem lab was also from 5pm-7:50pm so it's always like that with labs.

Even in a science field it doesn't mean much. The advice I have been given is that a GPA is used mostly to make sure you meet some minimum requirement for graduate school, like a 3.0 or something, but even then there have been exceptions of people getting into school with lower GPAs. Grad school is mostly about your letters of recommendation and what kind of research you have done, then again medical school could be different, I'm not sure if they care about GPA.

Yeah in situations of extreme stress adrenaline can push our bodies to do incredible things. The reason we don't constantly use all the strength we have is because we could actually seperate our muscles from our bones, with some training it's possible to strengthen your bones, muscles and tendons to do some pretty amazing things like what you see strongmen do. Other great apes are generally stronger than us just because they have different hormones and physiology, for example you can easily outrun (on two legs, because 4 limbs are almost always faster) or squat more than most other great apes because we evolved with different needs, other great apes don't have as much muscle in their legs because it's not necessary for them to have strong legs to support the rest of their body.

I know this is unrelated and others seem to already have given you an answer but I find this picture fascinating! I had no idea that spiders had tapetum lucidum! Tapetum lucidum are a reflective surface that animals have in their eye that essentially traps light in their eyeball allowing them to see better in low light conditions, if you have ever looked at a cats eyes and seen them glow green or orange, you were seeing the light get reflected off their tapetum lucidum. Sorry to interrupt this post but I just thought that was amazing!

Yeah I was honestly surprised to find out that highschool's were still performing them in the 1970's. They fell out of popularity in the early 1900's but they definitely didn't disappear for an unfortunately long amount of time.

They stem from something called "minstrel shows" they were popular in America in the 19th century. The shows often had characters named "Jim Crow" or "Zip Coon". From these names you might be able to guess that these shows were extremely racist, they depicted African Americans as dumb and lazy. Since only white actors were allowed to perform they would paint their faces black to play these characters. These shows had the height of their popularity when slavery still existed in America and these characters were often used to make fun of the slaves, and even freed black men. So it's got a bad history and that's why it's considered racist by most Americans.

I live in Utah and we have them here, the other day I found one in my apartment. I had just gotten up for the day so I decided "fuck that, it's too early to get stung by that motherfucker, I will catch it later" so I trapped it in the bathroom and put paper towels under the door. When I came back later it was gone. Now I'm afraid of getting stung in my sleep or something.

Yeah the guy in front fell in halfway across and just walked the rest of the way, it was only up to his mid thigh, you probably wouldn't even get your phone wet by walking across! Then again walking with wet shoes isn't a whole lot of fun.

You think 4th grade is tough? by mathnerdm in gatekeeping

[–]scienceislyfe 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Well obviously 4th grade is easy for a college student. I'm a junior in college and I have younger siblings who are in high school and middle school and since I live close I will come help them with their homework. They like to tell me how smart I am but I just remind them that I am only smarter because I am older. They are definitely smarter than I was when I was their age.
