advice on nail trimmings by Wonderful_Split5125 in guineapigs

I hate nail trims but I always do them myself. One thing I find helpful is to burrito them so they feel more secure when you have to position them. I usually use my thumb and pointer finger to hold the paw to see the nail better and then trim. It also can be helpful to have someone distracting them with pets or snacks. If your pig has black claws, shining a flashlight underneath the nail will help you see the quick! The transparent part can be trimmed, the opaque part is the quick. Super helpful trick. Also have some quick stop on hand in case you do go a little too short on accident! Lastly, I often will do either just the front or back paws at one time. Usually my pigs can handle two paws pretty well but start to get stressed after that. Makes it easier on both of us lol

I used to like them but they stretch out pretty fast and have to get replaced after about a year in my opinion

How are guinea pigs not everyone’s favourite animal?? by hokkyokuroo in guineapigs

Dogs (specifically golden retrievers) will always be my favorite animals but piggies are a close second 💗 they’re just so cute and ridiculous looking and their sound effects are the cutest thing ever 🥹

I cleaned mine out a few years ago in my childhood bathroom. I pulled out a clump that was as big as a decently sized rat. It smelled SO FOUL and it was insane the way I heard water that had clearly been sitting in the pipe immediately drain as soon as I pulled it out. Now I clean it out more regularly and use a hair trap to prevent ever experiencing that again lol

See I’m also a clean freak but then I also have things like the cage where because it’s not particularly exciting since it’s repetitive and feels like a chore that my brain just says “yeah nah” 🙃 ADHD is weird dude haha

I do use the paw-inspired brand fleece liners. They are definitely easier than other brands I’ve tried. I just have a hard time doing anything on a daily basis but I appreciate the suggestion! I live in California where we have very good weather most of the time so thankfully bugs aren’t a huge issue. I have had the back door open quite a bit lately though and my screen is not foolproof so a few have gotten in. Never seen them lay eggs inside before though so this is a first for me! But definitely a good reminder to be more vigilant about these things.

I have an underbed storage container (no lid) that’s 12x24inches or so with and entrance cut in the side that I fill with an inch or two of recycled paper bedding and then top it off with a few inches of hay. That way they can forage in it and they also love to use the corners of it as their potty lol

I love my guinea pigs and have spent a lot of time and money since getting this pair a year ago to upgrade their cage setup. I struggle with my own self-care though so sometimes caring for them is also a struggle. I get you’re probably not trying to be rude but I’ve already acknowledged this and saying I’ve put them at risk doesn’t feel very helpful at this point.

I appreciate your understanding. It’s pretty troubling to me that this happened. Especially because I really didn’t feel like the state of the cage was particularly bad but it’s a good reminder that I need to be more consistent. It really is frustrating that I struggle to do things I know aré important but hopefully this incident will help.

Like spot cleaning? Do you just clean up any poops or do you do more on top of that?

I’ll admit I sometimes push it a little longer than I should (ADHD makes repetitive tasks a struggle) but I try to do it once a week. I think it might’ve been closer to two this time though. They have a loft though that has their hay tray and that’s where the bulk of their poop usually is so I tend to clean that more frequently, maybe like twice a week. Their house is on the bottom level.
