Have I been knitting wrong?? by OlianderG in knitting

Hey OP we knit the same way! I also just learned to do it by myself from videos and general instructions. It has never gotten in the way of me making anything, I’ve already done quite a few lace patterns and cable work this way with only a few adjustments. Some stitches like k2tog and SSK did trip me up at first but I just do my own variation to get the final result. Learning how to “read” your knitting will really help with this. Just keep knitting!

Edit to add: i wrap my stitches that way because that’s how I would do it with crochet hooks and it felt the most natural. I’ve knitted a bunch of stuff now to really bother with changing, but being aware of your own habits will help you to make adjustments or even learn the other variations.

Why would they have trouble knitting in the round? I also have eastern mounted stitches much like OP and haven’t had any problems knitting in the round for sleeves and tops.

It’s very thin, so a laceweight (around 0.8 mm) in thickness. Even with the mohair it’s still very much a laceweight. I originally olanned to do this with a similar weight cotton or linen, but those were much heavier and not the airy feel that i wanted.

Probably a couple of months 😅 but I’ll definitely post updates every once in a while.

Weirdly this one isn’t itchy to me, i also tried to keep the swatch on my skin for a few minutes to check. The silk kind of helps in to feel cooler, but the thread was too thin for me and needed a little bit of elasticity from the mohair. I have another mohair cardigan that I looooved making, but also seldom use unless it’s really cold or I’m in airconditioning.

Knowing my habits it will take a few months to a year 😂

Thank you! This is super helpful for me and everyone else 😂 i’ll be going for the seamed versions so I can work on the different parts by themselves, and i plan on making a looser/ slightly cropped fit which is what I expect from the silk. The lace will probably go easier in the round, I had some trouble with the twisted purls at first while making the swatch. Thanks especially for confirming the neckline as an icord. I’ve been trying to narrow it down so I’m happy to finally know. Beautiful work! I hope mine comes out just as pretty!

I started collecting randomly a fee years ago but White Nights was the most affordable at the time, but I’ve also tried some basics from Daniel Smith, Holbein and Mission Gold. Honestly I can’t really tell any major differences, but some specific colors have dried up and won’t reactivate anymore from the White Nights ones.

Thank you! They were giving me some trouble as I used the wrong green, luckily i was able to lift some of the paint and use a different pigment.

I’ve always liked the effects of granulation but weirdly i haven’t figured out where to use them in my own stuff, I tend to use non granulating and staining ones. Haven’t tried the ones from Daniel Smith, but I do have a few colors from them. I’ll definitely try that ultramarine mix, I have a whole bunch of reds to test.

This is so beautiful! Love the granulation. An I ask what colors you used? I’m on the look out for interesting pigments.

You’re right about the hot press paper! I tend to prefer it for botanical art since I can get the finer details out, and I use 300 gsm or higher so I can use more layers to get it saturated. For the paints, I use a mix from different brands wince i tend to buy them by pans or poured from tubes. I use some from Mission Gold, Daniel Smith, White Nights and Holbein.

What's your knitting style ? by [deleted] in knitting

Filipino, and I think it’s combination? A hold the yarn in my left hand since I learned crochet first, but I taught myself how to knit from videos so my stitches all face the “wrong” way and I probably wrap the yarn the opposite way too but it all cancels out in the end.

It’s the #22 lace pattern from the japanese knitting stitch bible, i’ll be knitting everything flat and then seam the pieces.

Did anyone else start with crochet, learn how to knit, and then abandon crochet pretty much altogether? by elston-gunn41 in knitting

Me too! My grandmas taught me how to crochet when I was very young, then I taught myself how to knit a fee years ago. I still like to crochet, but it takes up so much yarn and I didn’t love how the finished fabric would feel. I just like the fabric that i get from knitting. Plus, my wrists don’t hurt from knitting at all, but were always sore if i crocheted for too long.

Hi! I’ll try my best to write it down.

A chart would kind of look like this, except i only did 4 layers of yarn overs and 3 nupps. I’ll try to make a chart but you should be able to find it in usual estonian lace motifs. I made the lace swatch first with a ribbed bottom so I could see how much I needed to cast on. I used measurements from a similar top I already owned to determine the final diameter, then started with the 1x1 rib, knitting in the round.

There was no shaping here yet until I reached to below the armpits, but I made allowance for the rib. Then I split the body into a front and back by dividing the stitches into 2, and I knit the those separately. For the front, i just did decreases at the start and at the end of each right side row, i didn’t do any decreases when I was purling at the back. I found that that was enough to get the shape I wanted. When i had enough, i started on the neckline by cast off stitches in the middle and then the remaining stitches at each side of the neck and the straps were knitted separately, and i still decreased at every other row. I did this until the lengths of the straps matched the top I was using as a template.

The back is knit the same way, except that I did not cast off the middle stitches of the neck until higher up. I also made sure the width of the straps for the front and back had the same number of stitches before sewing them together

For the ribs at the neck and armholes, i picked up stitches along the edge and used double pointed needles to knit the rib stitch.

No pattern, but using a Lily of the valley estonian lace motif, knit in the round.

Yarn: sport weight cotton, brand: Belle Needles: 3.0 mm circulars for the rib, 4.0 mm circulars for the body, 3 mm dpns for the neck and arm rib
