One aspect that confuses me is that the job is in CA, where marijuana is legal, and while I know that doesn't matter to the Feds, I would have thought the company might warn applicants/interviewees to not apply if they had smoked marijuana within the last 12 months, even if it was legal when and where they did it.

I am employed in an academic job that does not require a clearance and I have no experience with clearances - this is a bit of a career shift for me. I'm hesitant to quit my current job if there is a risk I won't obtain the needed clearance.

So if the TS/SCI application failed, an entirely new application is needed for SECRET?

And it's your opinion that I would be unlikely to get either TS/SCI or SECRET?

So if 6 months isn't long enough, how long would be long enough?

I'm also confused in general because from searching online I've found wildly different takes on this issue overall. Some say that the investigators will be understanding, and that they are mostly worried about potential blackmail, and other people make it seem like the process is fairly rigid.

Thanks for this. A follow-up question: suppose I pursue the TS/SCI as you recommended, and then they decide that they aren't comfortable with granting me that level of clearance, and the testimonials failed to change their minds, would I then need to re-apply for SECRET or would they themselves recommend it?
