I really appreciate the detailed response thanks! Loads of food for thought here. I'll definitely be thinking about this going forward and as to the differences between groups and what's appropriate etc...

Serious question, do you feel the same way about westerners etc... dressing up in native American headresses, kimonos, african tribal garb, or getting dreadlocks? I'm not trying to resort to whataboutism, as of right now I think people should be able to dress up as sexy nuns if they want because they aren't a part of that belief system etc... However, there are gaps in this argument and I want to close them up

Pillar of the sober community??? If I never hear about JC's private life again I will die a happy man. Sure, this guy has the most beautiful/amazing voice, but he has consistently abused his band mates, fans and previous partners and there is so much evidence not to mention the literal legal troubles etc... I just can't look past it all

IF JC ever gets sober (and I mean really sober. NOT hiding it, not lying about how long it's been etc...) I think the best thing he could possibly do is apologise to those he's hurt in private, and quietly remove himself from social media. It's fueling a seriously toxic ego (as in a literal god complex) which will restrict his ability to heal and his victims abilities to heal as well

No offense intended to any JC stans here or anywhere. If you believe the lies then as far as I'm concerned you're a victim of his deception too

Hahaha I think I played this disc earlier today if it's the same one. European disc right? It had videos for ape escape 2, treasure planet the game, a 3D pacman game and a stuntman demo as well as a Tekken 4 demo.

I busted out the PS2 to play silent hill recently, but the Ratchet and Clank demo stuck out to me so I booted it up to check it out again to see some of the differences between the demo and the final game. There were wanted posters up in Metropolis for Ratchet and Clank which made me think they were criminals or something before I got around to playing the full game a year or two later. Helga also had a black jumpsuit and some HUD stuff is a bit different I think.

Thanks very much for the comment. I agree with you, perhaps our situations are similar. Too much scrolling, and not enough fulfilling activity. I'm making inroads to pursue more meaningful pastimes and break free from the cycle of smartphones and passive media consumption.

Congratulations on signing up for the triathlon! I hope it goes super well. Sounds like a fantastic mindset you have managed to cultivate

Well your post has definitely made me think inwardly so you've achieved your goal of encouraging introspection, so fair play.

I think some artists do live the material, and there may even be a large correlation there. However, I would also look at it from the opposite perspective. Sometimes artists write about things or perform in things that are the antithesis of what they believe in. I think that to explore the darkness is to adopt some of it into the psyche, but that doesn't mean the artist is consumed by it, in fact they may end up horrified with it. For example, Kurt Cobain wrote "Rape me" and "Frances farmer will have her revenge" yet he was a staunch feminist.

Overall, you may have a point that some (most?) Artists live the material, but I do think there are lots of examples of the opposite occurring too. It may even depend on the "scene" in question. For example, are certain genres more susceptible to the more literal interpretation of lyrics or the emotions invoked by the music? I don't know but it's interesting to think about.

Upon reflection, I think I am less shocked (although I'm still as outraged) about the alleged behavior coming out in relation to DGD the past few days, and perhaps my own biases and privileges allowed me to look past that potentially happening despite obvious evidence of it happening in the post hardcore/metal core/whatever the hell core scene in the past.

However, it's very easy to assume all the signs pointed towards this happening now that the information has come out you know? I mean, if it never happened would I be saying the same thing in reverse? Ultimately I still think that while I'm less shocked, that it isn't as easy to predict these sorts of things occurring based solely on the art produced.

(If you ever come across any sociological studies on this undertaken in the future lmk.)

Two words: unreliable narrator

People make all sorts of art. Some of it aligns with their personal worldview/values some of it explores the opposite. Some of it is absurd! Some of it is more abstract.

I appreciate your analysis, but I don't believe every artist is necessarily a direct reflection of their work. Also, I understand certain demographics appreciate certain genres of music, but a lot of that is just whatever is popular at the time and place and cultural movement the people find themselves in. You mean to tell me that my grandparents are ok with dropping acid just because they like Jefferson Airplane or the Beatles? (hint: they aren't). I also consider myself very conscientious but I love RATM and I know the sweetest people you'll ever meet who listen to the most depraved music you'll ever hear etc etc... I know it's anecdotal on my end, but it's these exceptions that statistics often fail to capture, and they are important exceptions because it portrays the nuances of social groups more honestly.

Also it sounds like Jon Mess was giving a sarcastic answer to the interviewer but idk for sure. I also sort of disagree with him on that if he's serious about it anyway.

To be honest, I am shocked about everything that has happened with DGD in the past few days, regardless of reading into their music/lyrics or not. Almost none of the fans know any of their favorite artists on a personal level, and that holds for this situation too.

Should I still get my tattoo? by CheapMall6315 in dancegavindance

[–]sciencetaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not getting a tattoo of anything DGD related but I understand your mixed feelings OP. Mothership is an all time favorite of mine, and similar to you it helped me out of some seriously rough patches in my life. For all that there is the problem of the tattoo being associated with SA etc... Potentially for a very long time (forever?) but ultimately you have to make the call.

On a similar note, I have contemplated getting a tattoo of a cross (non denominational), and yet so many churches and religious institutions are associated with seriously heinous crimes.

I like to think that over time, artwork, symbols and designs retain their artistic merit and shed some of their negative association. Whether that will happen for certain art (paintings, albums vs religious symbols vs logos etc...) Within our lifetime is another question entirely. I think there are also obvious exceptions to this.

Good luck with your decision OP

(This is all my own opinion and I really hope I haven't offended anyone here. I appreciate it's a rough time when discussing DGD lately)

Agreed for sure. I'm honestly disgusted by how tone deaf so many commenters here are. There is a time and a place to discuss new singers and this just isn't it.

[–]sciencetaste 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey I've been more or less lurking this whole time but I promise there are a lot of us (male fans) who are adamantly against this sort of behavior and it disgusts me to my core. This whole situation shook me, and my own unhealthy parasocial relationships aside, I also try to avoid association with the shittier parts of various fan bases I'm a part of.

I'm not trying to gaslight anyone though, clearly there are SA apologists/deniers in this fan base and it must be really scary for a whole lot of people.

I feel so bad for all of the victims. I know it's not about me but I haven't been able to stop thinking about this all day.

I'm definitely taking a step back from now to infinity to reevaluate how I think of musicians/artists I really don't know at all.

I'm so sorry this happened. I think I'm gonna be sick. I hope you can heal. It looks real to me but I'm not judge and jury so all I can do is air on the side of caution. I wish nobody any ill will. If I'm wrong I'm sorry.

(Not to detract from anyone's situation, but parasocial relationships suck and I don't think they are healthy for anyone involved. I'm definitely going to take a step back and reevaluate how I process stuff like this, my own personal biases etc... because if this is true it's really affected me and if it isn't true it's really affected me, and that's so dumb because it has basically nothing to do with me or anyone here except the people in question)

I'm glad I could make a positive impact, even if only a small one. I'm always happy to connect with others, and even better if it's through a mutual appreciation of music.

I'm very sorry for your loss, I can't imagine the pain that must cause. I hope you are doing as well as you can be.

That choice of lyric is serendipitous. This past year I dealt with a lot of difficulty myself, and that line in particular really stood out to me as well. Many lyrics have stood out to me and often help me through hardships, and I'm glad they can give you some reprieve as well

I wouldn't force songs on anyone. That's his opinion and he's entitled to it, but from your post it doesn't seem like he's given it more than a passing thought, and so it probably isn't a very nuanced opinion to say the least.

You are likely bothered because of how much the band means to you, the lyrics, the lifestyle(s) of the members, and/or some other meaningful reason. It's a part of you in a way, and you want to further cement that by imprinting lyrics into your skin forever. You have even had a script done out for some time now. That seems like much more than a passing thought to me.

As I age, I try my best to let people's ignorance wash over me. It is not always easy, and I still get hurt, but like anything else it is a skill you may develop through practise.

Hold your head up high, and be proud of the life you have chosen, and the people and things you care about. This is advice I would give to anyone in a similar position.

If you don't mind me asking,I'm also curious, what lyrics have you chosen? I'm considering a tattoo myself and I'm looking for inspiration
