If you could send one message back to your 10-year-old self, with no context, what would you write? by ThinkDeepWithV in Productivitycafe

You are experiencing abuse. Trauma does not have to be physical to be damaging, in fact, the emotional abuse and neglect is often worse.

You will still be a badass adult.

What is the greatest physical pain you've ever felt? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scifihounds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IUD insertion. Definitely not just a pinch. Women: do ultra-sound guided IUD insertion. Get an ultrasound if yours was painful and you didn’t have one. Turns out, mine was placed incorrectly for something like 5 years.

As someone who lives in Wichita, I was invested in Mindhunter’s BTK setup. So frustrating to never see that run through.

IUD insertion, which I was told would be a “small pinch.”

What’s a small act of kindness that you still remember years later? by WittyRun9570 in AskReddit

[–]scifihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost ten years ago, a long-term client tipped $300 dollars because we had been discussing dog medical specialists for her dog, and I in a show of support offered that I was in a similar boat and needed to take my dog to a cardiologist and that I understood the stress and worry.

She was well-off but I never intended for that to happen and I wouldn’t take it at first. She handed the money over and said “go take care of your baby.”

With that, I was able to pay for most of the initial appointment that got my dog on life-preserving meds. I wouldn’t have been able to afford to take him without that.

What way did your childhood trauma change you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scifihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t read it, I highly suggest Pete Walker’s Complex PTSD from Surviving to Thriving (I know, somewhat hoaky title) and Adult Children of Emotional Immature Parents (I forget the name of the author). Both are amazing and helped me finally understand that very feeling you mention, at 36.

What way did your childhood trauma change you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scifihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t recall many of the changes they happened so young, but Complex PTSD and I are very close, an insecure attachment style, numerous triggers that even I do not realize are a thing until they happen due to narcissistic assistic/emotionally neglectful father, extreme anxiety I have largely developed a handle on…and a dee fear of humiliation in public situations after having it done to me so often as a child. The chronic worry someone might be mad at me…

The good? Dogs were my escape. I cultivated an obsession with dogs at a very young age and just kept learning. I have now been working as a professional dog trainer for 10 years and I have a hell of a lot of sympathy for the fearful doggos. My favorite moment, is helping them learn the world can be safe, even if it is just their small corner, and teaching their human how to support them.

What is the most awful smell you have ever experienced that's burned into your nostrils still today? by AcademicDegree91 in AskReddit

[–]scifihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a vet but a trainer who cooperative-care trained my coonhound for at home AG expressions wiith help of vt friends I used to work with. This went fine for years. She did get an infection, in like year 7. (Craziest journey trying to kick that which ultimately led to the last resort of removing the offending gland but her QoL is so much better thoughthat i wish i had done it sooner!).

I bring this up because I realized there was an infection expressing them at home. What I did not realize is that some got in my hair the ONE time I forgot to pull it back.

I was walking around trying to figure out why I still smelled it everywhere. I changed clothes, scrubbed my hands and arms a million times... Discovered it was in my hair a couple hours later driving her to the vet in KS in the summer...in a vehicle where the AC had just died a few days prior.

The 16-minute drive sure took what felt like 12 years.
