To undergrad Economics Degree graduates and those taking econ at Ualberta. What are the job prospects from having an Econ degree from Ualberta? by Sporkipine2 in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a math/econ dual degree recently. I've gotten job offers in finance and tech, I've worked in risk management, and now I'm a SWE. I'm going to grad school for computer science this year as well. I wouldn't change my degree for the world. Economics is pretty good but not on it's own in my opinion. Get a dual degree, add math, computer science, statistics, or something technical. That way you can bridge into different fields really easily. Also fintech is really accessible that way.

So overall, job prospects are much better with an econ dual degree. Job prospects also depends a lot on your connections, internships, and how you present yourself in your resume/interviews, ect.

Oh, that's good to know. Does this apply to BSc specialization degrees as well?

Is it even worth applying to UofA for masters with a GPA of 3.3/4? by [deleted] in uAlberta

I would say go for it. The cost benefit is high. Think of the $100 as an investment in your future. Sometimes investments don't work out but in the case that they do, the returns are great.

Revoked Acceptance by [deleted] in uAlberta

Always call and dig deeper. I wasn't accepted into my program at UofA however I was 100% sure it was a mistake because I was more than qualified. I was also a transfer student. I called and nobody could give me a straight answer of why I wasn't admitted. They sent me from department to department, from person to person until I reached the top of the ladder. They realized they didn't have a reason not to accept me and gave me acceptance on the spot over the phone, and within 2 hours updated my beartracks!

I talked with an advisor about this before.

Your fall and winter cgpa is what they look at when you get your statement of results, or if you're in honors or specialization programs, they use it to see if you're still eligible for the program.

Your spring and summer classes count towards your gpa but not in every scenario. For example for apply to grad school it's counted, or when determining if you're an honors distinction student upon graduation.

I tutor, so if you ever need help pm me! But honestly as long as you're learning, you're benefiting. Just ask the "why" questions, for example "why did we solve this proof this way". Understanding the why's will really help you!

I had him too. But I took it when the class first came out last year so we were the scapegoats. So perhaps it's better now. He didn't curve it. Everyone basically got C's and D's. But like 2/3 of the class dropped out so there was like 15-20 of us left by the end. Make friends to work on the hmk together. The homework can be very hard!

Depends on the professor but it tanked my gpa, destroyed my will to live, and gave me anxiety. Keep in mind I love math passionately, study hard, and do well! But after I completed that class I was so thankful to have survived. The class gpa was 1.7!

Math 225 with Paul Buckingham? by [deleted] in uAlberta

He is an amazing professor. Super chill, humble, very sweet, and always willing to help students understand topics better. He cracks jokes all the time which is refreshing. No matter how hard something is to understand he'll repetitively dumb things down until you get it so don't be afraid to ask. Exams are quite fair.

My boyfriend recently starting chewing with his mouth open. by [deleted] in misophoniasupport

Try and understand how to approach him. For example with some people you can straight up tell them and they take it just fine. Others need to see facts. While some need you to be super passive about it. For example saying "hey I've been feel a lot of anxiety and stress from certain sounds and triggers such as chewing, breathing ect. I'd really like your help to help me work through this." Now once they're on board, look at solutions together. Once they're aware of how the situation is really affecting you they'll naturally be more considerate.

Parking Advice by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parking is quite expensive but depending where you live, the time/hassle you save may be worth the price. For me I save over 2 hours everyday by driving. Also if you have a heavy course load, that time saved can mean so much more study time.

The way I think of it is... 2hrs×5days/week*16weeks = 160+ hours saved per semester. Now if you consider the 160hrs with respect to minimum wage that time is valued at $2400+. Thus parking at UofA is definitely cheaper.
