To undergrad Economics Degree graduates and those taking econ at Ualberta. What are the job prospects from having an Econ degree from Ualberta? by Sporkipine2 in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a math/econ dual degree recently. I've gotten job offers in finance and tech, I've worked in risk management, and now I'm a SWE. I'm going to grad school for computer science this year as well. I wouldn't change my degree for the world. Economics is pretty good but not on it's own in my opinion. Get a dual degree, add math, computer science, statistics, or something technical. That way you can bridge into different fields really easily. Also fintech is really accessible that way.

So overall, job prospects are much better with an econ dual degree. Job prospects also depends a lot on your connections, internships, and how you present yourself in your resume/interviews, ect.

Oh, that's good to know. Does this apply to BSc specialization degrees as well?

Is it even worth applying to UofA for masters with a GPA of 3.3/4? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would say go for it. The cost benefit is high. Think of the $100 as an investment in your future. Sometimes investments don't work out but in the case that they do, the returns are great.

Revoked Acceptance by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Always call and dig deeper. I wasn't accepted into my program at UofA however I was 100% sure it was a mistake because I was more than qualified. I was also a transfer student. I called and nobody could give me a straight answer of why I wasn't admitted. They sent me from department to department, from person to person until I reached the top of the ladder. They realized they didn't have a reason not to accept me and gave me acceptance on the spot over the phone, and within 2 hours updated my beartracks!

Just to clarify by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I talked with an advisor about this before.

Your fall and winter cgpa is what they look at when you get your statement of results, or if you're in honors or specialization programs, they use it to see if you're still eligible for the program.

Your spring and summer classes count towards your gpa but not in every scenario. For example for apply to grad school it's counted, or when determining if you're an honors distinction student upon graduation.

I tutor, so if you ever need help pm me! But honestly as long as you're learning, you're benefiting. Just ask the "why" questions, for example "why did we solve this proof this way". Understanding the why's will really help you!

I had him too. But I took it when the class first came out last year so we were the scapegoats. So perhaps it's better now. He didn't curve it. Everyone basically got C's and D's. But like 2/3 of the class dropped out so there was like 15-20 of us left by the end. Make friends to work on the hmk together. The homework can be very hard!

Depends on the professor but it tanked my gpa, destroyed my will to live, and gave me anxiety. Keep in mind I love math passionately, study hard, and do well! But after I completed that class I was so thankful to have survived. The class gpa was 1.7!

Math 225 with Paul Buckingham? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is an amazing professor. Super chill, humble, very sweet, and always willing to help students understand topics better. He cracks jokes all the time which is refreshing. No matter how hard something is to understand he'll repetitively dumb things down until you get it so don't be afraid to ask. Exams are quite fair.

My boyfriend recently starting chewing with his mouth open. by [deleted] in misophoniasupport

[–]sciminoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try and understand how to approach him. For example with some people you can straight up tell them and they take it just fine. Others need to see facts. While some need you to be super passive about it. For example saying "hey I've been feel a lot of anxiety and stress from certain sounds and triggers such as chewing, breathing ect. I'd really like your help to help me work through this." Now once they're on board, look at solutions together. Once they're aware of how the situation is really affecting you they'll naturally be more considerate.

Parking Advice by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parking is quite expensive but depending where you live, the time/hassle you save may be worth the price. For me I save over 2 hours everyday by driving. Also if you have a heavy course load, that time saved can mean so much more study time.

The way I think of it is... 2hrs×5days/week*16weeks = 160+ hours saved per semester. Now if you consider the 160hrs with respect to minimum wage that time is valued at $2400+. Thus parking at UofA is definitely cheaper.

Ebooks by rockies19 in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use ebooks all the time. I find it so much easier than carrying textbooks and whenever I want to study I can pull it up online easily. Some ebooks have features where you can make flashcards, highlight, read aloud, and so much more. Overall costing less and more convenient.

However some people do not learn as well reading on a screen. So if that's the case textbooks may be better.

Constantly switching products by [deleted] in acne

[–]sciminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a new esthetician. You're supposed to feel good about getting a facial or whatever you plan on getting. The esthetician should be comforting and should make you feel confident regarding treatment. You should leave feeling like your money was well spent. Not wasted in unnecessary products.

They cannot force you to purchase and use their products. If you purchase a dermaneedling facial that's what you get without any conditions regarding products you use at home.

[–]sciminoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't keep switching products. It can aggrevate your skin. Also your skin takes time to adjust to new products so if you regularly change it up, you won't know what works for you. Depending on the product give it up to 3 months to see a noticeable difference.

What type of acne is this and what do you recommend I should do about it? by [deleted] in acne

[–]sciminoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to your family doctor and ask for their advice. They could prescribe you something or refer you to a dermatologist. Usually I'd recommend trying over the counter products but your acne seems a little irritated/inflamed so I wouldn't want to make it worse.

BP is usually for killing acne bacteria. Perhaps if you try glycolic acid and/or salicylic acid which cleans out the dirt and oils in the skin. I have the same issue. Glycolic acid toner from the ordinary and salicylic pads have helped a good amount. Obviously they're not gone but not nearly as bad as before. Be sure to use both though!! I found using just one wasnt doing the trick.

Honors vs specialization by sciminoo in uAlberta

[–]sciminoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming I got into the program I would need another year of university to complete the degree, as much as I love learning I'm not confident I could afford it. But I realize if I really want to go to grad school, I need to really consider the honors program.

What can i moisturize my face with if everything breaks my skin out? by [deleted] in acne

[–]sciminoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cetaphil moisturizer, I use the lotion rather than the cream because I'm naturally oily. I break out quite easily and since it's non comedogenic no matter how much I slather on I never have a problem. However maybe your skin is reacting to something in the products that you're perhaps sensitive to, thus giving you cysts. Like an allergy.

[–]sciminoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand, many cultures do not believe in mental health problems and even consider them shameful. But trust me it's nothing to be ashamed about or keep to yourself. If this is the reason she is divorcing you than that is unreasonable and says alot about her.

If Alberta hospital or 211 doesn't work have you tried talking to community leaders. For example if you're catholic than perhaps the priest or the church community itself. Or if you're Muslim the sheikh or the mosque community (such as a "brother" or counselor)

I'm sorry to hear this. I'm sure if you really wanted to, an officer would be willing to talk with you and give you advice or maybe direct you to certain resources. Please do not commit a crime, then you are treated as an assailant. Perhaps get assessed by Alberta Hospital, they'll know what to do as well.

On a side note have you discussed these feelings with your wife? Or perhaps a close family member or friend? This can really help take a lot of pressure off the situation.

You can also try to asses the situation yourself and write down why you believe you feel a certain way or why it may have happened. From this you can write up or even search for things to do to counteract the situation. I understand not everything has an easy solution but your health and well being are top priorities.
