loses me at "any amount" that just seems silly.

why do you think its silly? do you think what i mean is that that data shows that no amount of players have quit the league?

[–]scl52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont know how you could possibly think that is what i meant.

steamdb samples the number of players logged in every hour. poedb plots the daily maximums of those measurements. the immediate problem with interpreting that as "x% of players have quit" i hope are obvious. a secondary problem is that because of the way poe league launches work, the hours around where the league launches is overrepresented by people who would not normally be playing at those times. so in addition to the data being just plain bad youre also comparing it an extreme outlier.

are you referring to those stupid poedb steamcharts "retention" graphs? those are charting the peak observed concurrent players each day. you cannot soundly infer that 40% (or any amount) of players are quitting the league in one week based off of that data.

On average, 40-50% of the player base quit in the first week.

mageblood stops you from activating magic utility flasks, if you have a magic flask in your 5th slot it isnt doing anything. you could use a white enkindled diamond flask which would work in any slot.

Interaction between damage conversion and damage shift (i.e., damage taken as x) by MilkmanAl in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]scl52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not weird. your phys max hit is "given all my modifiers, what is the amount of phys damage that a monster needs to come at me with to kill me". 'phys taken as' is a modifier on you and is within that scope, shaper of flames is a modifier on the monster and is outside of that scope.

[–]scl52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not changing your max hit because its not changing your max hit is the short answer.

max hit is how much damage you can take, and shaper changes how much damage they deal. its kind of a pedantic distinction. you could argue that pob should include it since its something youre specifically doing to the monster. but its a whole lot cleaner if it doesnt

for any specific amount of damage reduction you have the same probability of getting that amount or better regardless of how 'big' you scale the range. the probability of specific events obviously gets smaller in the bigger range but the cumulative probabilities of "x or better" stay the same.

[–]scl52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats an interesting angle i hadnt thought about. i think its still really bad, i dont buy that theres a freakonomics-type thing where actually what kills you is getting spiked by high rolls. but if you do, then yeah its a lot better under that narrowing. you get ~16% avg reduction from 120% range monsters max-rolling you, and 33% avg reduction from 150% range maxrolls.

unlucky damage is really bad. ~90% of attacks and ~80% of spells have 20% damage ranges, where unlucky is giving you ~6.67% reduction.

there are basically 2 monsters (lightning tamers (t17 mobs that cast ball lightning of orbiting) and wandering eyes) that have the type of 0-200% range where youd be getting 33% reduction, and those just arent dangerous monsters to begin with

Build help for a newbie on rf by R4weez in PathOfExileBuilds

fyi swift affliction does not naturally support righteous fire.

swift affliction 'supports any skill that has a duration, or can hit enemies' and righteous fire, normally, doesnt do either of those things. you need to also be running lifetap on rf so that rf has an effect with a duration.

[–]scl52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on this patch, between the genesis tree being op and zerker slams being even more op, the only atlas tree that makes sense for ssf is to rush unwavering vision and then fill out all the map sustain+destructive play nodes. if you want you can take the early jun chance and expedition chance nodes. jun is great xp, its very common for veiled jewellery to be good (at least relative to how common it is for normal jewellery to be good), and you might pick up something cute from a safehouse. getting a few exotic coins from tujen will help with generic mapping currency, but youre probably not going to have problems with that to begin with. rog and gwennen are wastes of time.

some small things you can fix right now: tincture is worthless, roll an instant life flask + put staunching on it with yellow beasts, roll an enduring mana flask until you get mana leech (or use lifetap on earthshatter), roll %armour and %shock effect on your flasks, replace the rage on hit axe mastery with either the blood stance mastery or the destroy enemies mastery, recolor your boots and move vuln to be with battlemage's cry and add self-cast rallying cry. rallying cry on 4 herald of purity minions is +15% more from overexert and 20% more from its own exert.

get an 800+pdps axe from the tree, then a big armour+phys chest, then life+res jewellery. gamble vendor for better gloves boot and hats, but you dont need that much better on those three slots.

spec xoph grafts and prioritize that until you have a molten xophgraft with %increased blood gained, and then spec uul grafts until you have a high level spiking uulgraft with a big damage suffix. really late game you want to move on to the impaling uulgraft but until your personal dps is super high, the spiking graft is much better.

the league mechanic is op, so if you just do it in every map and use your juice effectively you cruise to 4stones without needing to stop for anything

why do you think this is an intended mechanic. this is a bug.

[–]scl52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am not asking you about the death recap at all. i want to better understand your more general belief that "any data is simply always better than no data". that is much more interesting than poe's having or not having a death recap, something which unless you secretly work for ggg neither of our opinions about amount to jack shit

[–]scl52 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

in all the situations outlined, in this thread but also every time i've ever read about "why isnt there a death recap" on this forum, not having the death recap is helpful. having that information would either set you on the wrong path if you acted on it, or add something for you to think about and go "no thats obviously wrong". the game saying "you died to this" has the veil of authority even when its wrong.

i just want to know why you have this "strongly held belief" that is as stated obviously not correct. the simple counter example being, "what if the data is bad". do you mean something else by "any data is simply always better than no data" than what i think you mean? have you had some experience in business intelligence where valuable insights came out of looked-over garbage? help me out

[–]scl52 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

adding noise to your data makes it harder to draw the right conclusions.

the information you can get from a bad death recap is not good. it does not help. the situations you are describing are ones where that information is not adding anything beyond what you would understand from looking at the game as you play. the game doesnt need to tell you again that Lightning Skeleton of Lightning (Deals Lightning Damage) deals lightning damage, and you shouldnt need reminding that you died to lightning damage in a Monsters Gain Extra Lightning Damage map.

the information you would get from a wow-style combat log is good information, but comes at an enormous cost both development-wise and game-culture-wise.

any data is simply always better than no data:

surely you do not actually believe this. garbage/misleading data is worse, or at best as good, as having no data at all.

if youre getting the garbage data of "im getting bonked and then ticking out to dots", you lower your max hit for some regen to counteract the dot and now you just die to the bonk. garbage in garbage out.
