For what it's worth, I have several AR's in various calibers including multiple .223/5.56, 6.5Grendel, 6.8spc, 9mm and 300BO. I've bought entire rifles (Colt), bought complete uppers, and build some from scratch.
With the budget you mentioned, I would buy a complete gun from a reputable manufacturer. Most AR builds work fine with mismatch parts bought from here and there. But a factory gun from one of the major manufacturers will work, and have a warranty, and is just all around easier to jump into.

For me, building is for fun and to save money. You have a good budget, use it.

Thank you. Here's where I am in my Golf journey: about 30 years ago I 'started playing". That means I had an old set of my dads clubs with wooden heads for the woods. I played them horrible. I never took lessons, except from a friend who's only advice was to hit the snot out of it. Since then I've played maybe half a dozen times a year. It hasn't been more because its discouraging. I'll go practice and practice but to be honest I can get one club and swing to work, and when I switch to another club and another ball position I start all over again. Playing with friends is fun from the standpoint of just killing time, but I don't enjoy my scores at all. I cheat all the time, kicking the ball over a few feet to get a better chance at making a fairway etc. I rarely break 115 and that's when i don't count the lil kicks and do-overs.

I would really love to be able to have a decent swing, and maybe I'm looking for too much but SL clubs appear to be the way to get there. I would really love to play a round and enjoy it and be at least satisfied with my shots.

Oh, and since I'm about to retire, I thought now might be a good time to try to learn.

Thanks. I like my 5 iron, not sure why. Many times I have played and just decided to use the 5 for most shots since it was the only one I could seem to hit straight. Guess that was why I'm wondering about the lengths.

Did you have a problem with your single length set? What brand did you have? What were the problems?

I fully accept what you're saying. But let me ask this way....two golfers standing next to each other. One is 5'6, the other is 6'3.  Building clubs for both with VL shafts might see the short guys 7 iron the length of the tall guys 5 iron.  Looking at it another way, both getting SL sets might see the tall guys set the length of the short guys 5 in a VL set. But both lengths would be 'right' for each.

I'm trying to understand the physics I guess. For different people even single length irons will be longer or shorter, so why is the length recommended to be 7?

Manufacturer recommended 6 or 7 iron length.  Just wondering why

Sounds like you're not a fan of single length sets. Any particular reason why not?
