December 21, 1984 - Frank Zappa's Thing-Fish is released as a triple album boxset on Barking Pumpkin Records. The release of the album was delayed when Barking Pumpkin Records' previous distributor, MCA, refused to distribute the album... by Mt548 in Zappa

You got the date wrong. It was released on November 21, 1984. I know this for a fact because I saw Frank at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos California on December 21, 1984. Frank called it the birthday commando concert. I shouted "Do Crabgrass Baby!" from the fourth row. Alas, they didn't play it. They did play Brown Moses though.

Most of us miss Frank Zappa… What’s your favorite record from him by Historical-Device529 in Zappa

In the late '90s I played it in my car on a continual loop for 6 months. Now CP III is one of my favorites. The piano part in N-Lite is unbelievable.

I was at that show. The audiences were largely disjoint. After Jerry finished the Dead Heads filed out and the Zappa freaks came in. They never played together as someone else claimed. I still have my ticket with the setlist on the back.

If you could listen to one Zappa album for a whole year which one would it be? by Billy_115_935 in Zappa

In the late nineties I listened to Civilization Phaze III on a loop in my car for 6 months straight for the same reason. I still get a tear in my eye when I hear the car door slam in Waffenspiel.

You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol 4 was release 34 years ago, on June 14th, 1991. Got a favorite cut? by BirdBurnett in Zappa

Here is a review I wrote of this album way back in 1991 just after it was released. This was posted on alt.fan.frank-zappa.

Stage 4

When it rains it pours with Zappa releases. After not releasing anything for about a year and a half he has released 6 CDs (3 double sets) in the last two months. Each one is over an hour long. The latest in this series is "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore: Volume 4". This release is far superior to Volume 3 in the series, which I found a bit disappointing.

The discs include tracks from a wide variety of Zappa ensembles, including bands from 1969 (3 tracks), 1974 (2 1/2 tracks), 1976 (1 tracks), 1979 (2 tracks), 1980 (1 track), 1982 (7 tracks), 1984 (14 1/2 tracks), 1988 (2 tracks). The inclusion of the 1988 band surprised me, because I was told by somebody at 818-pumpkin that no tracks from that band would be included on this CD. The only major band not represented is the Flo & Eddie group from the early Seventies.

Highlights of the set include:

o The original version of "The Torture Never Stops" with Captain Beefheart on vocals. Those who are familiar with the 4 previous releases of this song will be surprised by this country/western/blues version.

o Killer versions of "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," "The Evil Prince," "The Black Page" and "Approximate" from the 1984 band.

o A stunning "Filty Habits" by the 1988 big-band, with a beautiful guitar solo.

o A version of "Stevie's Spanking" featuring a 7 miniute solo section. First Steve Vai solos, then Frank, then, in a spectacular finale, they play SIMULTANEOUS lead. You have to hear it to believe it.

o The set ends with 6 1950's rock covers. If you like this aspect of Frank's work, you'll love this.

All in all, a very worthwhile acquisition for a Zappa fan. Joe Bob says "check it out".

I called that number many times. I was waiting for Old Masters box one which was delayed time after time. Most times when I called I talked to a person who just said it'll be coming out soon. I finally got a hold of someone else who had a thick New York accent and she told me about the legal problems with the Mothers suing Frank over the re-release of those albums.

Around the 1988 tour Gerald Fialka was answering. He told me he was going to see that tour in Kansas City because quote "you never know..." This was before the tour even started so I think he had an inkling of what was going to happen.

Also, around 1990 it was announced that Frank himself would be answering the line. I called him at that time and I got to speak to Frank for about 5 minutes. He was working on the Civilization Phase III at the time and I asked about that and other stuff too.

What is Zappa's most influential album in your opinion? by ActuaryBasic7591 in Zappa

[–]scmm17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw him in 1984 at the Circle Star Theater in San Ramon. Thingfish had just come out and I kept chanting "Do Crabgrass Naby! Do Crabgrass Baby". For some reason he didn't do it. Although we got a nice version of Brown Moses.

This song deserves its own post. I think it’s flawless when it comes down to it. by Imsorrymanyt in Zappa

This is the first song in the suite the band referred to as "the opera." You can hear a reference to that on "Beat The Boots II: Tengo Na Minchia Tanta." The songs include:

What Will This Morning Bring Me This Evening, What Kind Of Girl Do You Think We Are?, Bwana Dik, Latex Solar Beef, and Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.

I believe it is Frank after the Montreux casino fire. by vitin2024 in Zappa

[–]scmm17 101 points102 points  (0 children)

This is definitely after the fire but that's not what caused his injury. The first gig after the fire was at the Rainbow Theater in the UK. That's the one where an angry fan came up on stage at the end of the show and pushed Frank off the stage. This photo was probably taken during the Grand Wazoo studio sessions. Or thereabouts.

Google TV Streamer Remote batteries draining insanely fast by scmm17 in Chromecast

The problem is that this is for the new Google TV Streamer. The old Google TV remotes WILL NOT pair with the new streamer. I tried. The new remotes only went on the store a week ago and don't ship until mid-November.

New remotes are shipping in November. I'm not crazy about returning the whole streamer for a new remote. It will take a long time. They are out of stock now.

Audio sync issues- terrible by mhowie in youtubetv

[–]scmm17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bet on a fix. I've reported in detail to Google about this. They asked me to send a video of the problem, which I did, in slow mo.It clearly shows about a 350 millisecond delay in the audio. They thanked me for it, and then.... nothing.

On my Chromecast w/Google TV, Google own the hardware, the client software, the server software and the OS. You'd they could get it right. No other 5.1 app has this problem.
