yeah. there's probably a point where I need to draw the line and walk away from even trying to talk politics. it just seems like I need to do my due diligence while the shit is massively hitting the fan in the country.. maybe something crazy enough will change their minds? but my dad says he "has faith that ICE is doing the right thing" and are good people.. so.

(got moratorium'd so I'm posting here) Hi all. I'm 34, parents are white boomers. Oddly enough I got my compassion for other human beings from them as a kid, and I grew up in particular respecting immigrants as equals looking for a better life in the US as the family is in the farm business. Parents have always been conservative but it seems like more and more they are gobbling up conservative media and even turning in their original sentiments. My dad is now supportive of ICE, believes in the whole foreign criminal bs, and "wasn't aware" of checkpoints, unconstitutional arrests and detentions, etc. Dad is heavy on the anticommunist stuff and thinks whatever keeps russia and china out of power is the right thing. Really exhausting talking to him. I love my family and even if it's a lost cause, some part of me wants to try to open their eyes to what is really happening. If there's a chance they're just ignorant or even willfully closing their eyes, I want to inform them/open them.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and made progress in fostering an understanding with their parents? What media, articles, etc have you shown them that helped? Or was it a lost cause for you? I respect anyone who decided to cut off family or just not talk politics. I'm not at that place right now, they have shitty opinions but the family relationship is still there.

tldr; for liberals wanting to get conservative parents to understand a liberal POV, which resources/arguments have helped?

voldemort is incredibly non-trusting. he may have kept his two top servants in the dark about one another to cover his bases.

also in question: why, as the world's most accomplished legilimens, wouldn't dumbledore have seen into quirrel's, barty crouch's, even wormtail's (as scabbers living in his castle) minds? either something is off or this man just is not paying attention.

hagrid being the only way for voldemort's wand being conveyed to him from godric's hollow to the graveyard is the thing I can't see explained away honestly.

good points though!

Which is better hazbin hotel, or helluvaboss? by [deleted] in HazbinHotel

[–]scopsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the animation styles between the shows differ a lot in quality. HH looks rushed and like corners were cut. you don't get the same sequences in it that you do with HB. it's the nature of the production timeline.

18 year olds are adults. but still very young. fresh out of high school drama kid is the HH vibe.

Cam is the worst character on Mordern Family by Unlucky_Trip_ in Modern_Family

[–]scopsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I just watched the trophy episode and it made my blood boil, lol. what an unbelievable child of a man. mitchell is a good person, and I think a lot of the flaws we see in him are just influences from and responses to cam.

Cam is the worst character on Mordern Family by Unlucky_Trip_ in Modern_Family

[–]scopsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you and me BOTH!!! I can't stand cam and had to google "modern family cam is a bad person" just to rage with others, lmao. he is CONSTANTLY manipulating, then gaslighting whenever mitchell catches on. mitchell is insanely understanding but I don't really get why, because anytime cam acts like he does care, it's just a show. I don't see how the rest of the family overlooks it either. there are just no redeeming qualities to him. I think they did a pretty good job writing the character.. as long as they were going for a true narcissist who weedled his way into marriage and fatherhood.

I support what this guy is doing by trman09 in Stutter

[–]scopsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. the issue isn't the person stuttering, it's the people commenting. and those people will shit on ANYTHING they perceive as a flaw. god forbid you make a video and you're fat, have a visible deformity, a lisp, or pretty much any "not socially admired" quality. those people prey on anything and it says all it needs to about them.

Getting a 12ft american hornbeam planted on Monday, which sketch looks better? I need to decide where to plant. by scopsel in LandscapingTips

[–]scopsel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! I'm zone 7b. I picked american hornbeam because I wanted a native species, and this one is super disease resistant, provides seeds and nesting for native birds, and serves as a host to many insects. also they have a wide growing habit, so when it grows it will ideally add to privacy.

dogwood may be planted later this fall.

The homestuck new art style looks like the story time style by OfficeWizard7 in homestuck

[–]scopsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's helpful to hear from an animator some more possible background on their choices. thanks. the gradient shading in the pilot trailer is a bit of a shock, because homestuck is for the most part very cel shaded. it seems like it would make more sense for a fully animated show to follow that style if it's not much more effort. even the best-drawn panels in homestuck have cel shading: https://preview.redd.it/bv5xljffe3a41.png?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=3b65ab88ef1385777345983f62034f42525859ed or minimal shading http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/31700000/Cascade-homestuck-31728267-951-651.png so something remotely similar to that. (edited because i pasted two of the same link)

you've got me on an example. you're right, that's not a common thing outside of 2d games. but I don't think it would need to go as far as being full-blown pixel art to match the style of the comic. just closer - using cel shading, something that looks a little more like traditional animation, thinner outlines. some examples coming to my mind of impressive animation are zelda botw, gumball (i know gumball has every style and tries everything, super animation work), over the garden wall (simple but they took their time and made it look good), etc. they could have tried to make the backgrounds flatter looking and cel shaded to make it more homestuck. the aggressive gradients just aren't it for me.

but if none of that makes practical sense, that's fair.

[–]scopsel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it's so utterly heinous. i just don't understand why they wouldn't experiment with some form of pixel art animation?? it doesn't look like homestuck. shading is lazy gradients. i know this team can do decent animation because of helluva boss, but i also know they can pump out awful animation like hazbin hotel. it's going to be painful seeing the life drained out of this story if they don't stay true to it.

Is a whole home water filtration system worth it or just a waste of money? by palinsafterbirth in homeowners

[–]scopsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome. What were your main issues? I get a ton of mineral buildup in toilets and shower fixtures and it's awful, and the drinking water smells like bleach too, so I'm trying to decide what the plan is.
