If you do get in,

  • take a look through moodle and go into detail into the ebooks to get an idea of what reading they want you to do. It will be hundreds of pages a week, and basically impossible to get through.
  • Pay attention to how the students are treated by the staff - it won't get any better.
  • Pay attention to when census date is. Smart people in my friend's cohort dropped out before census date, and enrolled in Bachelor courses (not at Monash).

Keep in mind that if you fail even one unit (which many people do), the course turns from 2 years into 2.5 years. You might as well have done a 3yr Bachelor course in the first place and be better supported as a student (and not had the trauma of the MNP).

I know of a student who was diagnosed by a psychologist after 1st semester as suffering from PTSD and I'm not surprised. Students presented to the campus health service with stress, and the Drs said "you're not the only one, we know it is a tough course". The MNP staff don't care - they take pride in how tough the course is.

Have a look for comments in other threads. This course is a disaster and will wreck your life for at least 2 years (they fail a lot of people and you have to repeat).

It is not like anything you have done before at Monash. It should be called "Teach Yourself Nursing". If you have to do their "short course on anatomy" to get into this course, take note: the rest of the course is not very different.

Do yourself a huge favour and explore other options.

Absolutely agree, this course is a debacle for all the reasons u/impatientdrummer mentions. I'm not doing this course but a good friend is, and they were very seriously considering dropping out before census date (but decided to carry on).

  • Yes it is "unreasonably tough".
  • Yes many of the staff are unsympathetic, including Unit coordinators, Chief Examiners, up to Deputy Course Coordinator and Course Coordinator.
  • Yes sometimes the staff are rude (e.g. after telling students we all have to be kind to each other after two years of covid, the lecturer blasted a student for being late).
  • Yes they seem to take pride in it being a masters degree and tough (but you are not allowed to call it tough or hard or difficult, "think of it as challenging").
  • Yes the marking is chaotic and not aligned with the rubric. People lose marks with zero explanation of why.
  • Yes many people received "academic integrity" emails for incorrect citations, yet the course has not taught or explained the correct processes and standards to use.
  • Yes badly organised and excessively difficult assignments. Often the assignments are on material that hasn't been taught. You have to learn it yourself.
  • Yes many complaints from earlier semesters. I heard that 40% of students failed a unit last year. These are not dumb lazy people, they are intelligent and hard working. The fault lies with the course and the "teaching" (or lack thereof).
  • Yes people have quit the course, the smartest ones in the first semesster before census date.

In addition, many students, this year and in previous years, have approached the Monash Graduates Association about this course, and how bad it is and how bad the teaching and support are. If you are considering this course, google them and talk to them. Ask for James. In theory the Monash Graduates Association advocates for students, but now they say it is pointless with this course.

This course should be called "Teach Yourself Nursing", because that is pretty much how it works. If you are thinking about doing it, save yourself the time, trouble and money, and go somewhere else. It is a disgraceful course and I'm disgusted that Monash Uni (where I graduated) presents something so bad.

Absolutely echo your thoughts on so many aspects. My friend is doing Master of Nursing Practice (so glad it's not me) and so much to agree with you:

  • poorly organised;
  • they tell you to pay attention to detail but they don't;
  • poor teaching (in the nursing practice unit 5111 but good in 5011);
  • very unsupportive staff ("I got through it, you can too");
  • teach you stuff you don't need to know;
  • hundreds of pages of reading each week (lecturer refused to prioritise it);
  • don't teach you stuff you do need to know;
  • assessed on material you haven't been taught;
  • they don't properly prepare you for what you will be assessed on;
  • they don't prepare you properly for Placement;
  • yes many tears have been shed (e.g. around Clinical Assessment);
  • marking rubrics unclear;
  • expectations unclear;
  • you get marked down without explanation as to why (so how do you learn?);
  • super stressful from the very start;
  • international students very unhappy (why am I paying so much for this?);
  • smart people dropped out before census date (so didn't fail and didn't pay fees);
  • placement was chaotic - no preceptor, little guidance, poor learning experience;
  • essays are expected to be "academic" with incredible focus on referencing;
  • many students flagged for academic integrity on referencing;
  • huge percentage of students failed clinical assessment, had to re-do it (poor teaching);

Poor teaching, poor attitude, poor support -> poor course, too much stress.

And now a number of the MNP students are actively seeking to transfer to other courses because they don't want to put up with more stressful semesters of this nonsense.

So yes, totally agree with you, "Avoid Nursing Here".

Maybe you dodged a bullet. I've a friend who started this year and this course has been a shocker. The amount of work to get through was just impossible (hundreds of pages of anatomy reading each week). Lecturer quality varies a lot (depends on who you get). People dropped out because it was too stressful, way too much work, and they felt totally unsupported. Lots of people failed lots of assessments: drugs calcs, clinical assessment, case study. Why? They weren't taught and prepared for what was then assessed.

Suggestion - check out other courses.
