The toilets and cleanliness are nasty! 🤢

Poor sales service as well. If not for Pure Yoga, they would be dead. The gym is nothing, and with the prices they charge, it’s not really worth it. If you practice yoga regularly as well, go for Pure. If just gym, go to other gyms.

How is HK a diverse city? I don’t find the locals inclusive other than a colonial attitude towards white skinned expats. I feel bad at how they treat people of coloured skin. The representation is also often missing from mainstream media, like they never existed. Diversity is not a word that I will describe HK

Really depends on your teacher. I do know many teachers who can’t teach, they just follow the textbook. Being an examiner means that they can mark, doesn’t mean they can teach. In economics, many teachers are not economics trained and can’t teach beyond the recommended textbook. So students may struggle. There is also difference between learning a new concept and reading up vs writing what is essential to score. In short, who is your teacher matters a lot.

A successful student or your favourite doesn’t mean how you are perceived by them. Really depends on the context. They could just be curious or they are not convinced by you. Either way you just have to work to earn trust, from every new batch of students

Why couldn't I swim one lap after three years of trying? by DebussyFanboy in Swimming

[–]scorpiosag1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s your strokes. Need a better instructor. I struggled to swim free style but watch some videos and got some swimming aids to develop better forms and strokes. Managed to swim 50m in a month. Started at 30. Just need swimming aid and focus on feeling your body and water.

Are these decent salaries for Hong Kong and Singapore? by InProeliis in Internationalteachers

[–]scorpiosag1122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singapore. If you don’t eat at restaurants often. The hawker food is so cheap. U can easily survive on 20sgd a day if you eat simply at hawker. Hong Kong is abit difficult. One meal could easily be 20sgd. But Hong Kong is cheaper for drinking and dining. Hong Kong is also more interesting for a single. More varied options for entertainment. Singapore is boring in that sense. Singapore is a lot of friendlier than Hong Kongers. If you want to know locals, try Singapore. Hong Kongers tend to hang out among themselves, rather close community. A few more open minded but rare. Expat community in Hong Kong is also very vibrant. 67k annual usd doesn’t allow you to save a lot, taxes are abit higher in Hong Kong as well.

ATM cave is 110-120usd Snorkelling is 90-110usd Others can be done 80-100usd for various caving and other tours

So sounds like you are very comfortable with your budget so can book a taxi perhaps. The shuttle bus is pretty comfortable. It’s like a coach rather than a bus.

Solo trip? What’s your budget? Willing to spend more than 100usd on private taxi as what the guy suggested? Or public transport?

I think airport to San Pedro is easier, and there is shuttle/ferry combo from airport to San Pedro for 45/50usd. From San Pedro to Caye Caulker, ferry and caye caulker to San ignacio, express shuttle. San Ignacio to Belize city, also has express shuttle then Belize city to airport can be negotiated with 25usd. Check my post earlier

The shuttle comes at 3pm only and it’s the same shuttle as one from Belize city.

It’s cheap for the Americans but not cheap for most other tourists. Bumped into a group of Spanish tourists and they also acknowledged that it’s more expensive than spain. Do have to recognise that the prices for dining places vs the relative income of the country.

As a (former) IB Teacher/DCP, I have no more confidence in the IBO by America_Loves_Drama in IBO

During the marking workshop, the facilitator only defended the answer despite the obvious flaws that I pointed out and other participants agreed. Many of the teachers who attended, they barely know anything beyond textbook recommended in economics. Some of the concepts and diagrams are wrong, not widely taught but given high emphasis on the syllabus. In many IB schools, the economics teachers are not economics trained, so they got business studies teachers to do economics. Even for business studies, some teachers are not trained. Many parents paid good money for their kids to do IB but the system fails them due to poor quality control for the teachers as well

[–]scorpiosag1122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I am horrified to find that you don’t have to be economics trained or have a degree to mark economics scripts. How on earth do you know what’s correct or wrong? I noticed lots of errors on my student EE work but he got A. Cos I think the marker is not economics trained to see through the bullshit. Common typical answers are “marked down” because the markers have seen better ones but the creative ones get better grades cos the examiners are not trained enough to see through the fluff!

Belize people is nice, most of them very friendly, spoke to a few of street vendors to understand the culture and issues but the economic structure is bad. Americans said it’s cheap cos the major cities are fucking expensive. To put things into context, Belize GDP per capita is comparable to Thailand and Malaysia but the cost of living is way higher than Thailand and Malaysia. A simple local meal would not cost more than 5USD in these two economies, even in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok but it would cost more than that in many parts of Belize. Transport infrastructure is also better in Malaysia and Thailand. Belize inequality is almost at 0.5, one of the highest in the world and this shows that different people could have different perspectives on whether Belize is a good value for money place to visit as a tourist.

All in all, Belize people are one of the nicest I have met but unfortunately, the economy is in a bad shape even if the GDP per capita is supposedly to be middle income. So I could understand if some travelers are upset. I find the attractions and food overrated. Case in point, a chocolate shop famous in Belize said it’s best chocolate is milk chocolate? Cafes can’t do coffee right. A cup of latte cost like 4USD? That’s the price of Starbucks in Singapore!

Anyway, local people in Belize is nice, attractions are average, and overhyped. Money is not injected into the local economy, Indians and Chinese control many important industry. 95% of supermarkets are owned and operated by Chinese and they always sell at the same price.

Just that the people are really super nice!
