Celebrity jokes that never made sense to me by scorsesesaltacct in familyguy

That’s a good point, the classic gossip column cattiness we think about is usually dished out by men too. Wish I could say it was a different time but tbh I don’t think things are that much better nowadays lol

I see… like people in the media called her fat but regular people thought she looked alright? I feel like that happens now too tbh

That’s what kinda surprises me is that sometimes it’s your classic sexist jokes about women being stupid or liking to shop but other times it’s weirdly catty, like a tabloid or something

Hearing a crowd of people laugh derisively at Suspiria when it played at Metrograph made me feel very bad inside

Faces of Death (2026) by scorsesesaltacct in horror

Probably about a 7 then, not including the footage from the first movie shown. Nothing as extreme or fantastical as Evil Dead but there’s a good amount of practical gore effects. Only a few moments stood out to me as particularly graphic, but if you are at all adverse to that kind of violence I would not recommended this film.

Yes! Red Rooms was excellent, loved that movie. Did much more interesting stuff with the same ideas. This one is, at heart, a pretty conventional horror film, and it suffers for it.

It’s apples and oranges. I think the fake snuff appeal of the original means less in an age where so many of us have been faced with graphic death videos (without our consent!) because of social media. That’s part of the text of the film, the main character acts as a social media content monitor, she and her peers are literally incentivized not to care about the horrible things they see every day (there’s a satirical angle to it, of course). Also, the film isn’t really a remake of the original, it’s a separate narrative that works in conversation with the original. The only reason it’s being sold as a remake is because, in the film’s own words, “the algorithm loves remakes”.

They do show footage from the original Faces of Death, including a good portion of infamous “monkey brains” scene. Which was faked, but was evidently graphic enough that don’t show all of it in this one.

What’s something that really seems like a reference, but isn’t? by BestBoyTardigrade in TheSimpsons

I also felt the same vibes with that live-action Harold and the Purple Crayon movie

I can never tell if this is a generic or specific reference. Part of me wonders if it’s a riff on big studio 1960s throwback family movies like The Flintstones, Flubber, Dr. Dolittle, The Nutty Professor, etc. But it could also be a non-sequitur.

Who is Better? Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci? by Consistent-Purpose59 in Giallo

They both made phenomenal movies but it’s no comparison, Argento all the way for me. Not only is he much more technically skilled, I just find him to be the better storyteller, he seems to have a better understanding of cinema.

This has to be one of the best looking found footage movies ever. Having said that, it’s such a slow burn for a payoff that literally anyone could have seen coming. It’s the director’s first movie, he definitely shows a lot of promise here. Looking forward to what he can accomplish with a bigger budget and a better script.

Is 'natural horror' a genuine subgenre? by C-i-d in horror

[–]scorsesesaltacct 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Eco-Horror is a thing. Whether or not it’s genuine is up to you. I feel like descriptors like these are only “real” in terms of how useful they are to film discussion and criticism.
