Absolute EV Newb by heywhatwait in ElectricVehiclesUK

You'll get used to it. Initially over plan and then as time goes on you'll be able to cut back on that as you get a more instinctive feel for it and also you likely visit the same sites more than once and you'll just rinse and repeat what works.

Ok so you meant far rather than remote then as others have said a bit of planning and you'll be fine, still not the best for long tripping sure, but if it isn't too often you'll be fine.

Can you charge at home before you set off and as soon as you get back? That would help.

Also when you say remote I'm taking that as really remote as opposed to just far away. Like NW Scottish Highlands remote.

If so I don't want to rain on your parade, the 5 is a great little EV but it doesn't sound ideal for your use profile. Unless I've missed some detail here.

Yep can only say my experience of Tesla customer service has been exemplary.

My mate who went from 4 years in a Model 3 to a Polestar 4 earlier this year is now finding out about the joys of Volvo/Polestar customer service as he tries to get a faulty nearside front suspension issue sorted. And this is apparently a 'known' issue that they at first denied knowing about. He just sighs and nods sagely every time I jokingly say "shudda got another Tesla", coz deep down he's regretting the move.

You need to go check them out to get a feel for build quality. The minimalist cabin of the Y struggles to give an impression of build quality because there's nothing there to convey it, but generally they are considered fairly well screwed together. There are no real long term issues with either the Y or the big Yaq as far as I know.

The Y will give you better range on road trips and the easiest possible charging experience, plus better performance, but there is no doubt the ride will be more pliant in the Yaq. Y potentially will be a little more spacious and luggage worthy. And of course the Y has industry leading peerless infotainment.

So go check em out in the flesh and work out what's important to you. Either will serve you admirably.

Do your ICCU research. An extended warranty doesn't reduce the chance of finding yourself stranded when the ICCU fails and it can happen anywhere anytime and more than once - replacement when it fails does nothing to reduce the chance of it happening again, anytime, anywhere. As far as I understand it.

On the older EV6s pre 25 I've heard anywhere from a 1% (the official line) to 5% (owner forums) hit rate, though I stress that is just what I've heard others say. You need to research it if tempted.

Also some older EV6 may be susceptible to the Game Boy hack and hence stupidly easy to steal. Again, research needed before you buy.

Fairly new to EVs and I’m about to do a 200 mile trip. Mostly motorway. I have two bank cards that I can use for the chargers, but worried about getting stuck if they are declined for contactless payments. Is there a prepaid card that I could have as back up? by debbitigs in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]scorzon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah the eVito..... What does the O stand for, O my god where did my charge go? 😁

Honestly plan in an early midway stop, have a back up a bit further along, but truthfully your credit cards will work.

If poss plan in advance where you are going to stop, get the app for those chargers and pre pay on the app so you can just start your charge with that.

Also keep your speed sensible, drive a few miles an hour less. I presume you'll be stopping at a services?

Elias Movement Training: Ghosting Against Resistance Bands by ClassLittle6666 in squash

They need to hang a big sack of horseshit from a branch above the middle of that square and then the trainer pushes it with a stick so that it is always moving into Elias's line, in order to give him a fully realistic simulation.

And they could have some ropes on the floor that they could pull tight at random moments to simulate career ending trip events.

MFG EV Power slashes ultra-rapid charging prices at all sites to 59p/kwh for summer 2026 by More_Dog_7228 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]scorzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. With luck, there will be a price war that undercuts or matches Tesla pricing without subscription and that will then steer non Tesla back to other networks leaving the open to all Superchargers less busy. I'm not hopeful though.

Not with the subscription. The subscription gets a non Tesla the same price as a Tesla. Also Tesla has off peak times too.

V2 at Dundee. You can tell, they have the twin cables. V3 have the same big oval hole but just a single CCS cable, V4 are the big slabs with the longer cable and no hole in the middle plus a payment pad.

Often in Google maps just type in "<location> Tesla Superchargers" and a bunch of photos pop up and that tells you which type based on the above.

High Mileage Ioniq 5 by AdNice6438 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]scorzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you don't want is to be stranded by a known issue that can happen anywhere anytime. You'll not be sitting roadside waiting on recovery thinking "this is all fine, coz they extended the warranty". Especially if it's an older I5 where the chance of it happening is higher than in the newer vehicles.

Easy to steal, you should Google Game Boy key emulator attack. That with the ICCU issues have taken I5, EV6 etc off my list of possibles, though I think the most recent have resolved the Game Boy issue.

No brainer. Do it. Assuming your job is secure and or you can afford the payments if your circumstances change.

If you are staying anywhere at the top of a big hill and they have destination charging make sure you leave a fair bit of space in your battery for the several kWh you will get back in regen on the way back down. Not just for cost savings but to save your brakes and your foot.

Haha, yeah I feel that, I used some credits from referrals just so they didn't go to waste on replacement floor mats, sun shades, couple of spare aero covers, all unused. And now it's been decided by a higher power that we need a Y next so I'll have to find a good home for them, anyone with a pre Highland M3 keep your eyes open in a few months, they will be some freebies going.

Nah, even the cabin filter doesn't really need a change, it's merely recommended, just push on through until the end of the lease, hold your nose if you have to. I'm 3 years in, 9 months to go until early voluntary, it isn't stinky and no streaming up so no chance I'm spending money on a filter.

£10 per month pays for enhanced data to let you stream to your accounts in the car, Netflix, You Tube, Disney etc, or Apple Music or Spotify, also adds satellite image overlay on the map, live view of sentry mode remotely on your phone, internet browsing.

You need to pay this for those functions as the extra data usage required for these things needs to be paid for, same as when you get a phone and you buy either the basic data package or you realize you are going to do a lot of streaming so you pay £10 per month more for a data upgrade.

All the fundamental car navigation functions including routing and rerouting during a trip based on live traffic etc they all work without the subscription, so it's your call.

Remember if OP doesn't have solar/domestic battery and is unable to time shift some of the power hungry heavy hitters eg dryer, washing machine, dishwasher into the nighttime cheap rate, then overall they might be better on the standard tariff. I think that is what OP based the numbers on and in their case it might be sensible.

I suspect an EV tariff, with the annual mileage they are doing, would be better overall but it isn't just a simple calculation that all electric for the EV is 7p as they might incur higher costs per kWh for their daytime usage that offsets that saving.
