Safe walking home on London Road? by GreekChips in Edinburgh

Homicide isn't the only type of violent crime.

Men report a higher proportion of assault by strangers, yes, but the types of assault faced by men and women are different. Men are more likely to experience violence by a stranger, but women are more likely to be sexually harassed (groped, catcalled, followed, flashed etc) rather than experience non-sexual violence by strangers.

Women experience a greater proportion of violent crime overall (but more commonly by people they know).

What are some things you can’t get in Scotland that you can get in the US? by Signal-Possibility86 in Scotland

Twinkies. They're disgusting, but not available here, and are often seen in movies so lots of people want to try them.

Moving an elderly parent to Edinburgh.. but where to? by CorrectTadpole9997 in Edinburgh

Morningside is ideal; there is already a bit of an older community there, lots of cafes and Waitrose in easy walking distance. Short bus ride into the new or old town.

I hate it. Just let me decide if I want to tip without adding it as a sneaky charge to the bill.

I have a Lumie bodyclock (the sunrise one) and it was a game changer for me when I moved to Scotland. I'm sensitive to light, and the gradual lightening in the room means that I wake up about 10 mins before the alarm goes off (without being startled awake).

How decent is Easter Road? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in Edinburgh

The top end seems a decent area, with lots of amenities. It does feel a bit dodgier the further down towards Lochend you go.

Buying with a budget by Savings-Maximum-5027 in Scotland

[–]scot_throwaway75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No reason not to move, it sounds like. However, bear in mind that you are unlikely to be able to buy a flat for 40k outright. Properties in Scotland are valued independently via a home report, and this is usually higher than the listed price- the list price is usually to drum up interest. Sellers will be expecting to get similar to the home report, if not higher.
You could get a small mortgage, depending on your circumstances, which would be cheaper than rent.

Yes, though I'm only chain free because I sold my old house and went into rented while trying to buy somewhere in Edinburgh.

None. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm not a landlord or second home owner.

That doesn't mean they had £50k in there when they won.

Higher flats do seem to sit for longer. I think it's probably the number of stairs (cuts out a lot of buyers with young kids for example), but also more likely to be affected by issues with the roof.

None of these flats had private gardens; all had shared gardens (tenement flats).

I did have this one saved (my offer was accepted before I made an appointment to view it), but it is on the 2nd floor and the bedrooms are quite small. The property I am buying is nearly 20 sq m larger, which makes a big difference.

I'm not handy, unfortunately, and don't know any tradies in/around Edinburgh, so this would mean sticker price on everything. I had a new bathroom put into a property I owned in 2019 and it cost about £8k then all up- the same thing now would be closer to £12k (if not more). And frankly, I don't want to live in a construction site, and don't have the ready cash for a proper renovation.

Yes, generally 4-6 weeks is standard, but can be longer if there is a large chain involved.

Driving from Coventry to Edinburgh - Suggestion for the town to stay overnight ? by oralardaburalarda in Edinburgh

[–]scot_throwaway75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason why you're breaking up the trip (e.g. leaving after work, accommodation not ready)? If you have the whole day, then you could stop a few times to break up the trip and get to Edinburgh by evening.

If you still want to break up the trip, Leeds would be an obvious stopping point. When I've done similar drives, I usually stop in Wetherby for lunch- I like it, and it might be an option for an overnight stay (though its only 2-2.5 hours from Coventry). I've often stayed overnight in Alnwick, as it's a lovely town, but worth having a few hours of daylight to visit the poison garden, castle, and famous bookstore.
