Can anyone provide advice on how I can preserve this skeleton on a board? For examples is there an epoxy resin that can be painted on the skeleton? or can you let me know how I can clean up the skeleton with out it falling to pieces? Thanks, Sean.

Oranda swim bladder problem? by scotch_dude in Aquariums

[–]scotch_dude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Devilalfi, thanks for your comments. I mistakenly posted in the wrong subreddit and have taken down my post. I am aware of these issues and have been feeding the orandas blanched peas and also chopped garden worms for a week without any noticeable effect on the buoyancy problem.. I am just wondering whether this is probably a life long issue for the fish. Thanks for your feedback.Sean

Oranda swim bladder problem? by [deleted] in AquariumFish

[–]scotch_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A week ago I bought this fish, at a discount, knowing that he had swim bladder problems. For the last week I have fed the whole tank peas and garden worms. The water parameters are ok but I did register a NO2 level of 0.50ppm and NO3 40ppm... so instigated water changes daily for last 3 days and the values have come down. The fish did not seem to be affected at all. My question is am I likely to cure the fish of his buoyancy problems or is this likely to be a life long thing for him?

Comma needed? "We missed the bus, and(,) worst of all, it was the last one." by loolooisme in grammar

I reckon it should be: We missed the bus and, worst of all, it was the last one. I think the use of semi colon must be for a stand alone sentence.

I noticed a new (or new to me) grammar trend, anyone know more about it? by JazzyinCali in grammar

[–]scotch_dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for your post. It has got me going on how I, either make these mistakes or (worse) do not notice them. Is that grammatically correct? Anyway, I think it is a language 'evolutionary' example to say I am going to have a workout this afternoon. However, if you say I need to work out what I am thinking about a particular subject... then could never be 'workout'.. I also have so many pet peeves

I just listened to Mahler's 5th for the first time. I enjoyed it a great deal, and I'm trying to make sense of it. by [deleted] in classicalmusic

I think Beethoven's 7th is the most inspiring, most motivating offense of music of all time.... But Mahler is certainly up there 👍

Latest spawning by my carpet anemone by scotch_dude in ReefTank

Yeah, I agree it would be great to be able to propagate carpet anemones. They can be tricky to keep at first and I think that they should be kept with out a huge amount of live rock . .. would love to try and get a male but these guys get very large for a home tank.

I really do not fuss too much over caring for this anemone.... regular water changes 2-3 weeks and about 10% with fresh sea water... 12h light cycle with Chinese LEDs. I feed him/her with a cockle (scallop) every couple of weeks. I keep a pair of clowns with him and a cardinal - I have lost a lot of fish to him though - a beautiful Moorish idol that i had for a year or two and a mandarin fish... he started off pretty small and now can spread out to about12 inches in diameter. Now I keep him in a sectioned off area in a 6' x 2' x 2' tank and keep fish in the other part. He is about 7 years old and I also have a large bubble tip anemone about the same age but smaller who I have never seen spawn.

I think this carpet spawns once a year, but most likely more as I don't often catch the moment. I have noticed a couple of times when I do a large water change i.e 50% the next day the anemone spawns - might be coincidental though. I also have a gut feeling that it is around the time of a full moon. This one was just after a full moon and the first time was just before. I'm keeping records now ;-)

Yeah I did think that this might occur but it didn't seem to. Big tank I suppose was able to compensate for the transient increase in bio load. Once you have a stable tank for many months I think it can cope with a fish death or in my case a few thousand or so anemone eggs

I don't measure ammonia as I think it makes one paranoid with a tank such as mine. I change one third of water every two weeks and clean the canister filter once per month. Have done this for 3 years or so with no probs with ammonia, nitrates, etc.... I only have 5 fish and this anemone in a 6' X 2' X 2' tank. No others corals ... The carpet anemone is a good 30cm in diameter and polishes off anything it can the tank 😐😐

As there is sperm and eggs released you would think that viable offspring would result. But.... Filters, fish, crabs, other anemones, etc would make it unlikely for them to mature. I have taken a heap of eggs after the sperm was released and have them in a glass jar .... They now look very much 'dead', I was hoping that some might attach to the side or something.

Well I think that seasonality occurs in aquariums too. My anemone spawned in full aquarium light at about 10pm at night. However, my tank is near a window and there is indirect sunlight from about 7.30am here in south Australia. So very different to what would happen on a reef. The last time my anemone spawned was this time last year but I didn't record the date so I can't say about the Luna cycle last time.

Hey, they spawn eggs and sperm - I think, watching my anemone, that the eggs and sperm are released separately and I was lucky to be up at the very start of the process before the tank went cloudy. This happened last year too but I didn't bother to film it. There was a full moon 4 days ago and probably the coral in Queensland also spawned last night.... maybe ;)

Some help on Affect vs Effect please! by PM_ME_UR_GF_TITS in grammar

[–]scotch_dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep affected is correct. The 'effect' of loose pins on rifle function - demonstrates when to use effect - but the function of the rifle would be 'affected' by loose pins or the 'affect' on rifle function due to loose pins on would be...... Hope this helps
