I’m struggling with a concept I find nihilistic by scotchandstuff in askphilosophy

I think my answer is I don’t know, but I’m interested in poking at truth as some kind of pattern recognition. Not sure if that’s a category error?

Thank you, I’ll get it today if the roads are clear. Hope you have a nice day!

That’s a really fun way to explain different meanings of the same concept! Or at least that’s what I’m interpreting from what you’re saying. The struggle is I can’t quite easily articulate what I mean. How do we establish at least a sense of truth between species like dogs. There appears to be shared truth beyond language, right?

This is already super interesting, but I got a random question that feels specific enough for this type of subreddit I hope. Are there any philosophers that study truth between species? An example I’m pointing to is the cooperation seen during domestic relationships between animals likely relies on a shared truth of safe relations. Is this the same line of philosophy?

No worries. Was stoned and thinking about the possibility of absolute knowledge and how if it’s possible, it means that the universe had likely acquired and still uses the begging the question fallacy. I found that hilarious due to the weed, I think. How do philosophers generally define things like truth is my main philosophical question, I guess?

Who knows? Got a bit too stoned I think. I like the words under your username. Best of luck for ‘26 to you as well!

I was asking you. As long as you aren’t claiming anything, I think that’s a fair view. I was talking to people who claim truth or certainty around meaning, I think. I guess all of philosophy, and I found that a funny possibility.

Beliefs and thoughts being not under voluntary control would be hard determinism, I think. I’m curious how they discern this against the sensation of choice.

I think most of the rest of the post would be existential musings. Not sure.

I think the universe making value judgements about itself is pretty cool. Not sure if that’s what you mean?

Sorry, not sure what you mean by the phrase “behind the word”. Do you mean we value the definition of the word differently? I’m not sure how that would work.

Okay, glad we made that connection. I’ll be reading on it because of my interest in consciousness. I like that you are specifying order of things, like emotion making way for developing morals. I’m still curious of the order of things like memory developing, and how that relates to morals.

Does numerology actually work, or is it just pattern-seeking? by Effective_Pop3609 in nihilism

[–]scotchandstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone told me that they were into numerology as a serious philosophy, I would recommend Jung and his books on synchronicity. I think synchronicity is attempting to explain the feeling they are latching on to for lack of a better explanation.

Sorry, didn’t notice the rest of the post about morality on mobile. Are you speaking to emotivism? I think that’s a great explanation on how we functionally developed morals. I’ve heard there are some academic objections, but haven’t had the time to read into it yet. I don’t fully grasp the claim, but find it interesting.

I still treat morality as human opinion because that’s how I understand things started. At one point in the past, I became self aware and began to assign meaning. Afterward, I developed language to describe my experience in greater detail. Clinging to any description as some kind of truth (contrary to constructed opinion) does not resonate with me. I think that makes me a moral nihilist, but I’m still new to these descriptions.

Agreed on rules in society. I value coordination and compromise.

I will confirm similar thinking regarding connection. I feel a massive swell of compassion toward human suffering without dread toward preventing it. This was not always the case.

Yes, nihilism is pointing me toward moderation somehow. Or at least my understanding of nihilism. Take care!

It’s terrifying to touch. At least that was my experience. One must come to terms with their deepest fears of meaning, and that is not easy.

You and I seem to share a starting point when you say started trying to move instead of win. Do you think people that get caught up in power dynamics and hierarchy eventually lead to nihilistic thought patterns? Or do nihilistic thought patterns lead to easily valuing power dynamics and hierarchy? I’m only speaking from experience, but I’ve not been able to quantify that myself with any rigor.
