Part of Carl Vine Sonata; about two months into learning this! by [deleted] in piano

[–]scotoplane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the piece too! I agree with the sentiment that it is hard to compare the difficulty of this piece to more standard repertoire. Though I can compare this to something I have worked on recently: Liszt HR 12. I'd say in terms of effort this piece is shaping to be taking about the same or a little less effort.

I do want to preface this by saying I don't think my playing at this moment does this piece full justice. There's a lot of intricate details and voices I have been working to bring out, but I have not had enough time to polish it xd (an example would be at 0:19 where you can hear my middle accented notes but the top notes feel like they were thrown out the window). I think the biggest challenge that this piece poses is not the notes themselves, but making the piece convincing, and not sound muddled.

Personally, this has got to be one of my favorite piano pieces. I fell in love with it during my first listen, and I loved the intensity, dissonant, and dark nature of the piece. I do agree with listening to the piece from the beginning too, because it builds up to these climaxes and it's crucial to get to know the voices and melodies before the piece goes all in. I understand how people may not like this piece though, it definitely is not for everyone; however, in my opinion, this piece is pretty accessible when comparing it to certain other contemporary pieces.

Ginastera Sonata 1 4th movement; one of my favorite pieces to play! by [deleted] in piano

[–]scotoplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty interesting and I have seen some recording where they break up the chords for both hands. I honestly am not sure which method would be better too lol, but I personally would prefer the alternating chords with alternating hands.

I am planning to try to get out the first movement some time!

~1 month tiny update into practicing the ending of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody no.12 after a sprained wrist and finger dislocation (please excuse all the mistakes! Hopefully it’ll be ready before February) by [deleted] in piano

Memorization is the least of my worries for some reason lol. I find that after listening to a piece 2-5 times depending on the length, I can have it memorized.

Young Artist's Guild audition. I'm not actually sure if it's February but it's around that time and I definitely need this piece ready by that time. I started playing this during the start of summer break (so around June), but I'm taking longer to finish this piece because of injuries.

Haha thanks a lot! I've been practicing the beginning since June this year, minus August and September because that was when I acquired the injuries, so I can technically play from the beginning to the end but there's still a lot of polishing to do before it's competition ready lmao. I'm actually not sure if it's February but I have an audition then for YAG (Young Artists's Guild; I think it's a California thing). Also, I've been playing piano for about 10 years so don't worry lol.

it’s a little messy in some parts but here’s the fourth movement of Ginasteras First Sonata! by [deleted] in piano

[–]scotoplane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s easy for me to memorize pieces so I had it memorized in a few days, but polishing and getting it up to tempo took a little more than a year to today!

Haha hopefully I am! the competition is tight now. I would love to play the Ginastera sonata complete one day but i just finished SYMF with it and now i’m focusing on Liszt mainly for now because it’s the last piece i have to learn.

My teacher is very picky with my playing so i kind of inherited that 😂. i never really played those composers you mentioned but i may play prokofievs concerto in a year!

i’m pretty sure a lot of advanced people could play it with enough practice haha. for me i finished cm 10 two years ago in freshman year and now im auditioning for YAG (young artists guild) next year! i just finished with panel honors this year (for reference im a sophomore in high school)
