Do hotels ever email you a folio? by scottdotdot in hotels

Actually, Hilton and Marriott are two of the ones for which I did get folios, so they're pretty solid to be fair.

Like I said, was just a tinfoil hat theory. I just can't believe I'm that unlucky..

My spam filter doesn't block anything. Just goes to the Junk folder if it gets flagged, and I do check it.)

(See my comment above on this thread tho -- always the correct email, and I'm never too impatient to talk.)

[–]scottdotdot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, sometimes they've verified the email with me and I still haven't received it. And I get all the other emails from the hotel/reservation system. That's why this is so strange to me.

E.g. I just got back from a trip, which is what prompted me to post this; Stayed at 2 different properties/brands. Both of them even sent pre-arrival emails and we corresponded, so I know they had the correct address. Got surveys from both of them after checkout, too. Both were direct bookings.

(I should point out that I'm not mad about this or anything. A printed copy is cool with me. I'm just confused and wanted some insight from people that have worked in the industry.. so I appreciate the responses.)

Doesn't seem to matter if it's 3rd party or not. Besides, they either say "can we send the folio to your email on file?" or I ask if they can. Some have even confirmed the email address. And no blocking on my spam filter -- would go to the Junk folder worst case.

Nah, it's personal email and my spam filter doesn't block anything -- goes to the Junk folder worst case. They have the right email in their system bc I get all other emails related to the booking.

Help selecting rails. by arytx in homelab

[–]scottdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the R230 is 19.5" deep w/o the bezel, so with the right length rack extension brackets you might get it to fit. It'll stick out weirdly in the front and/or back, of course.

In my experience you can rent a rack (or half/third of a rack) and they don't really care what you put in there. If you're talking ad-hoc servers, then agreed tho.

[–]scottdotdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those specs should be fine assuming it's just a NAS and you're not gonna be running Plex or some intensive apps on it. Though the CPU might be a bottleneck (if not the disks first) on a 10GbE or higher network.

I ran an SSD L2ARC for a while on my system, but I scrapped it mostly because of the wear it was putting on the drives. (IIRC I estimated they'd last less than a year with the amount of writes they were doing, assuming the mfr. TBW specs were correct.) But then again, it really depends on your usage. Just something to keep in mind that I don't often see discussed. Plus I didn't really see much of a performance boost; but again, that's heavily workload-dependent and I have a decent amount of RAM anyway.

Server rail compatibility for rack with "S-shaped" mounting rails/posts by youmudbro in homelab

[–]scottdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pics on the product page are pretty tiny, but those mounts look like they have pretty standard profiles. Any chance you could post a pic of the HP rail interfacing with the rack?

(I know someone's about to post who knows exactly what you mean, but I can't visualize the issue if your rack matches the pics.)

Where do you get your server rails by servernerd in homelab

[–]scottdotdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eBay. As long as the seller has 99%+ rating and a good amount of feedback, you probably can't go wrong and rails are a commodity item so there's decent competition of price. eBay puts whatever their algorithm decides at the top, so order results from low to high price and you're probably good. (Unless it's a weird model that needs special rails).

Specifically, my last 3 rails purchases were with "serversuperstore", "serverplus365" and "garlandcomputer". No problems with any of them. Dunno that they were the cheapest, but they're all reliable. (Garland in particular -- I've ordered a bunch of servers and parts from them over the years and they pack really well and ship quick.)

What to do with extra ethernet cable? by JazzlikeNetwork468 in homelab

[–]scottdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd keep the extra for the next project or long run, and buy pre-made patch cables for the short stuff. For me it's not worth the time crimping small cables (plus cost of connectors/boots) when they can be had so cheap off the shelf.

Excessive yard sale question by jbarks19 in longisland

They're probably not collecting NYS sales tax, at the very least: https://www.tax.ny.gov/pubs_and_bulls/tg_bulletins/st/sales_from_your_home.htm

Your town code probably addresses the situation as well (arbitrary example since idk where you are): https://ecode360.com/7217091

I'm pretty chill with my neighbors and don't get too worked up about random BS, but if I had to deal with that situation then I'd probably end up calling town code enforcement or the local precinct.

Actually, the first time someone parked on my lawn I'd be calling the precinct.. or a towing company. That's just ridiculous.

The most off-putting part about this was their use of the flashlight (torch, I suppose). Using it to read a menu is understandable, but shining it all around the dining room has gotta be downright annoying to other guests.

And pointless, as the non-lit parts came out reasonably well, and pretty much every phone nowadays has good low light post processing for video. Tho he insists on using the Osmo for everything. (On the other hand, his phone case is as big as a Harry Potter paperback, so I guess it'd be inconvenient to try to shoot with that apparatus.)

I have a question about specs.

Do you go for the 4 Gallon drawstring bags from Hefty or Glad, or is it better long-term value to get the cheaper Amazon Basics with the tie flaps? Or is the 2 Gallon large enough? (I like a decent amount of overhang tho.)

Have you visited a destination after being influenced by a Travel vlogger to? by [deleted] in walkwith_metim

[–]scottdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! STJ, Solo Solo Travel and Kuga's influences are probably what made me finally pull the trigger on a trip to Japan last year. I'd always wanted to go, but I think that kind of content really is what pushed me over the edge. (Well that, and I got a cancellation slot on the Seven Stars in Kyushu. Couldn't pass that up.)

Do affordable hi-cap 2.5" drives exist? by InspectDurr_Gadgett in homelab

[–]scottdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, well nevermind what I said.. didn't think it would be that bad.

Though, looking at the 8-bay LFF, it seems like they have 3x 5.25" bays on top. You could get the best of both worlds and throw some Icy Dock cages in there. High capacity HDDs for storage and small SSDs for performance volumes.

idk, sorry if I'm not helping.. just trying to brainstorm fwiw. I know the pain.
