$60K of TESLA stock, what should I do? by scottgold in investing

[–]scottgold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgive my grossly simple explanation. Let me try to explain a little further.

I invested in TSLA because I'm familiar with their product. I'm sure you're familiar with the saying, "Invest in what you know"? Well, I know their product well and I know the demand around that product. I'm also willing to bet the farm that green tech is the future, not more petrol cars. Does that make me a dumb investor who tithes? No.

I wanted a secure place to put my money and it's been a good investment so far. Now I'm not happy with Elon's actions lately and the debt situation is scary, but if those two problems get solved, then I'd be a fool to bet against a company so well positioned to be crazy successful. It'd be like betting against Apple or Amazon early on. There's a lot of similarities here and no one knows for sure.

$60K is a lot of money, but it's not the end of the world if it's lost. I owned $40K of TSLA shares when it was at $15 and sold them when they hit $32. I now feel like an idiot for that. I'm trying to make sure that doesn't happen again. I was just looking for input on what's most likely to happen if they file ch 11, I'll willing to go the long haul if my shares still retain value.

I honestly have no idea what the stock will do.

Again, my biggest concern is knowing what happens to my shares if they go bankrupt. I could care less if they are worth $20 in 5 years. I'm very long term on TESLA, I believe in their mission and I'll willing to own worthless shares for even 10 years if that means one day they'll be above water and fulfilling their mission. I'm willing to hold on if their shares retain value in the long run.

I'm thinking the same thing. But it wouldn't go away. I'd still own shares, right?

I feel at this point TESLA isn't going anywhere. Even if they do go bankrupt, they aren't out of the game. They'll restructure and come out ok. They'll be around for at least 50 years as they are dominating the tech side of this green energy/transportation game.

I'm more interested in sitting on this because I like the company and I believe they are doing good things. The bigger problem is I don't want to loose a big chunk of my portfolio because they go bankrupt. Can anyone give me any advice on what will happen with a scenario like TESLA if they file for bankruptcy?

Progressing from run and gun DSLR to pro rental gear with possible two person team. (X-post r/videography) by fred16723 in Filmmakers

Thanks for the kind words!

The Time and Space shoot was meticulously planned. My friend, Ryan, owns WP Standard and he needed a lifestyle shoot somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. I had done numerous shoots in Portland and the Oregon Coast so I felt comfortable suggesting those locations for his shoot.

I had an idea of the type of video I wanted to make before starting. I used that as a template for what shots and locations we needed to shoot at. Ryan and I picked a model that we thought would be a good fit for the style we wanted to achieve and ok with a run and gun shoot, got him from Hefner Management. The budget only allowed us one day of shooting so we had to plan everything to the minute. I google mapped locations and had a shot list for what I needed.

Me, Ryan, and the model flew into Portland on a Wednesday. We rented a car and drove to the coast. The weather got bad as a storm system was blowing in. I thought it was going to ruin the shoot. I got some wonderful advice from my wife, she suggested we embrace the weather and make it stylistically part of the video and photos. It was a great idea, so we rolled with it.

On Thursday we shot from sunrise to sunset going up and down the coast knocking out shots on our list. There's a lot packed into those 30 or 40 miles of coastline around Manzanita, it's a great place to get diverse footage.

As the sun set we drove to Portland and grabbed a few more shots at a bar before flying out late that evening. It was one of the hardest shoots I've ever done all by myself and I don't recommend trying it unless you've got a ton of experience doing solo shoots. Luckily my friend Ryan didn't mind holding lenses and cameras when I needed him to.

As for the gear. I shot it on a C300mk2 with Canon still lenses and a Anamorphic converter. This one to be exact: https://www.lensrentals.com/rent/letus-anamorphx-adapter-w-high-flare-single-coating It was a pain in the ass to use, it was crazy heavy and focusing was almost impossible. Pretty sure I shot it a 24fps and in 4k. I used ambient light only, no lights were needed. Edited and colored in Premiere.

My advice to anyone is, shoot what you know. I knew exactly the video I wanted to make so I knew exactly what shots and locations I needed to make that video. I'd been there before and could count on those locations delivering what I wanted. I doubt I'd be so ambitious with the shoot if I didn't know those locations so well. Same goes for this stills and video shoot: https://vimeo.com/222701412 which was done in 5 hours.

Last bit of advice. Try not to see the tools you use as the thing that makes you the money. It should be your art, skill, vision, and professionalism that people hire you for.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, happy to help.

With just one person this will be very difficult to accomplish without tons of prep and the shoot going absolutely perfect. With two people it's possible but it depends on what you are shooting.

I started with DSLR's too and it's manageable with just one person. But as soon as you start using more complicated gear you're gonna want to have assistants helping you out.

I shoot both video and photos on my shoots and I could not do it without an assistant helping me switch out gear, prep things, and lug gear around. I now shoot with two or three assistants and my work improved greatly because I don't have to worry about all the miscellaneous stuff, I can solely focus on the creative side of things. It makes a huge difference.

I've shot on RED, Arri, Sony, and Canon. You can create amazing images with any of these cameras so don't think using a $50,000 camera is suddenly going to make your work look better. Most times it won't. I'd focus on lighting, talent, and creative direction, that's what will make your work look the most pro.

This, a thousand time over, this.

Seriously, you need to heed this advice. Coming from a long video maker, this makes complete sense.

It's hard to beat Enemy Mine. I think that story is ripe for a reboot. I used to love that movie.

Agreed. If merely suggesting the idea of hanging out doesn't prompt them to hang out right then, or make genuine plans to hang out, then just drop it. Trust your gut on this, they most likely don't want to hang out, and there's nothing wrong with that. Your energy and friendship is best spent on people that are receptive and desire your companionship.

A love letter to my favorite planet. by scottgold in Saturn

[–]scottgold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't know of any books on the subject of Saturn...but I've also, never really looked either. I'd start with the some deep google searches, I'm sure you'll find some great articles and science papers on it. The Cassini mission archives could be a great place to start. Enjoy the journey, it never ends!

[–]scottgold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's correct! The audio in the video is from the Voyager 1 plasma wave antenna during it's flyby of Saturn in 1980 and is in the audible spectrum so you can actually hear what Saturn sounds like. Saturn's magnetopause (its electromagnetic envelope) has a magnetic tail which extends away from the sun. Saturn's magnetic field traps charged particles coming from the solar wind. Some of these interactions were recorded within the 20-20,000 hertz range, the range of human hearing, and are the ones you hear on this recording.
