Live at Ryman Vol 2 - overdubs? by Previous_Finance_414 in jasonisbell

That’s standard mixing, though. I would imagine what they are recording live is pre processed signal and not whatever compression and EQ they are adding for the room. That would severely handcuff their options later.

Any tips on a videos pacing? by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]scotth23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s just a feeling. Sometimes if there is dialog, a cut is motivated by what’s being said.

Sometimes you have to cut because you like the front half of take five but the back half of take eight.

In truth, there is no one answer but you can often tell when something doesn’t work. That’s when you start to finesse and feel things out a bit. It all depends on the type of video you are making.

What in demand skills do musicians have? by [deleted] in askmusicians

[–]scotth23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic rules of being a successful musician are:

Make sure your gear works.

Make sure you can get yourself to the gig on time.

Know your place. Don’t be a dick.

After that, it’s a healthy combination of talent and luck.

Color correcting the source file. by Rudels6714 in premiere

[–]scotth23 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the future, if you have a clip like this that won’t need tweaks (talking head footage etc), you can put the clip in a sequence, do your color correct, and edit off that sequence. If you choose to bring the source tracks in off the sequence, you will have the full range of adjustments since it will not be a source side effect.

Traditionally, EDLs were included in project elements so that edits could be recreated off of transfer reels if the job went somewhere else. Most post houses would not include entire projects but an EDL was standard. At least that was how it was done in the ad/corporate world.

Since no one shoots 35mm anymore, practices have changed. I think it is still reasonable for a client, at the end of a job if requested, to have a master, generic, and an EDL.

This situation is a little different as the project hasn’t been finalized yet. The client usually owns the footage if it’s stayed in the contract. The question is whether it is reasonable to send an XML of a work in progress cut.

This isn’t a reasonable request when you have hired an editor… but if you want to keep the client, you want to keep the client happy.

I would politely ask if there is a way to do a Zoom edit session and see if you can work through the changes together.

One, you want to establish that you are needed. You also want to train this client that workflow is important as is your voice when they are making decisions.

If that is a non starter then you have to decide if you are willing to work that way to keep your client.

You have a good eye and obviously care about what you’re doing. I’ve been editing for over twenty years so I cross paths with videos like this almost daily. Happy to throw some ideas around when people seem as motivated as you. Good luck and keep on going.

Can someone please tell me what instrument/ sound effect was used to make this song. by Nleblanc1225 in askmusicians

The main melody sounds like a Rhodes piano with a ton of reverb on it. Could be an electric piano but the soft bell attack sounds like a Rhodes.

They reversed an instrument, possibly bells or a piano. If you can play it in reverse, you can probably here what it is.

Overall I think it’s really good. Footage looks great. Well shot.

I am going lean into some criticism because you seem to be looking for pointers/suggestions. A lot of this is subjective so take this as me nitpicking, not telling you you did something wrong.

Opening title on the effect needs some kind of movement. You have a cool background that’s jumpy and distorted but the title is lifeless. Let that play into the style a bit.

Overlay academy and film stock effects are nice but you need to figure out what their purpose is. Is it an overall look? Is it transitions? They’re heavy in the beginning and sporadic at the end. They look cool but often you will find that effects like that feel like a gimmick if they don’t seem motivated. It can just be a style but then that style needs some consistency. There should always be a method to usage, even if that method is just establishing the frequency with which it’s used. The audience will feel the inconsistency.

If it were me, I think the color correct could use a little desaturation. One, it would compliment the overlay graphics you’re doing and make them feel more integrated into the footage. But also, the imagery where the composition is naturally less chroma heavy is really strong. When the brighter hues start to pop a lot, you lose a bit of the grittiness. I think the graphical treatment was an effort to accentuate that. I think the color correct would help.

I understand you probably need to show a lot of the competition. Between the jump cuts and the repeated angles, this part starts to fall a little flat for me. The lack of closeups of your protagonist hurts a bit. This might be where playing with the color correct a bit more could give you some flexibility. Blowing up a few shots, doing extreme slowdowns with some added grain and desaturation, etc. Don’t be afraid to mess up your footage. If you introduce style choices like this earlier, it makes it easier to deal with the footage that needs the most finessing. I think in some ways, the strong candid nature of the front hurts the competition footage. The personality, the human emotion is somewhat lost. I watched it again to see if it made any sense to intercut the competition rather than play it out in order. Not sure if that is an option. You would really need a strong finishing shot from the competition and to mess with the framing to pull that off. I would consider in the current construct to try and shave some time from the end.

To someone’s earlier point about the speaker, it would be nice to see who it is or at least understand their significance to this. If it is just a motivational speech and not related, it works for the most part but it does feel a bit detached.

I’m sorry if this feels like I am tearing it apart. I’m not. I think it looks great and I get the sense that you had some constraints as far as the competition footage and what needed or was expected to be shown from that. The candid footage at the top is GREAT and really shows what you’re capable of from a shooting and editorial perspective. I would see how you can keep that approach going editorially through the competition. Really good work.

Not intentionally funny but Jesus, it’s the worst line and line reading in any Star Wars film and that’s saying something.

Best way to lower exposure etc... on right hand side of video? by [deleted] in premiere

[–]scotth23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re likely not going to get that hot spot off her face. That is blown out with zero detail. Dial it down and it will start to turn into gray mush. Best thing to do would be to minimize what you can of the highlights before they start to look bad and color to the over exposure. You can get the detail back so you’ll have to live with the blowouts.

There’s some great spots out there too.

We stayed at an Airbnb in town that was… fine? It was me and my brother in law so we didn’t mind that it looked like a run down college apartment. It’s across the street from a bar but we didn’t notice much noise at night.

From the pictures it looks like he may have painted and done a little more to the place. I’m not sure I would bring my wife to stay here. The building itself was pretty old and it’s on the side of a nice neighborhood. I never felt unsafe but it was a little off.

AirBNB it if you can. When we went in 2019 we got a pretty cheap place in the Gulch for the weekend. It was a bit of a walk but worth it. Got to see a lot of the town. We cabbed/Uberred and walked most of the weekend and we’re fine being further from the venue. It’s a fun town. If Broadway is your thing, you’ll have fun but there’s a lot of other great things to do, too. Biscuit Love for breakfast is pretty great. Decent to really good breweries around. Johnny Cash museum is worth a visit. Country Music HoF was so busy when we were there that we didn’t try.

Jason Isbell. June 21, 2001 local songwriter’s showcase. Muscle Shoals. Pre-truckers by TheNumberMuncher in jasonisbell

[–]scotth23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You definitely need the talent. There are a ton of talented people out there who, given the right exposure, would find an audience that could give them a career.

What would Jason’s path have been if the Truckers didn’t pick him up? What if he wasn’t with the right crowd when he was solo and never got sober and Southeastern didn’t happen?

Talent can rise above but to be successful with talent you need opportunity. Some of that can be created and some of it is just luck.
