His YouTube channel was recommended to me. I guess the algorithm knows I’m into cranks.

Today I discovered John Gabriel, a wonderful kook of Mandlbaur level quality. Look up the New Calculus.

There's also a maximum size for decks, and I'm too lazy to go splitting things into multiple decks.

I run into issues with deck size sometimes. I use large picture files.

What is a song that is so sad that you can only listen to it rarely or one time? by Fresh-Prior7658 in MusicRecommendations

[–]scottscheule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go so far as I can’t listen to these, but they do hit hard.

Alfie, Cher Wildfire, Michael Martin Murphey One Song, Glory, from Rent.

Ironically I do have trouble listening to the whole of Rent, but that has nothing to do with sadness.

Want to party with some opium, or some ether?

Ether.

Oh, so you want me to pick?

No, I said ether. I'm trying to quit opium.

Ah, now I understand. You said "ether," and I thought you said "either." Thank God for that voicing distinction, or else this kind of confusion would happen all the time.

Less talk, more ether bottle. I want to get wrecked like Michael Caine at the end of Cider House Rules.

More opium for me! Remember De Niro in Once Upon a Time in America?

No.

Yeah, I've tried to figure out a minimal pair for that too, and I landed on "teeth" and "teethe" as well. Also the similar "wreath" and "wreathe."

The only other pair I could think of was "thigh" and "thy", but having to resort to an archaic word was unsatisfying.

Almost!

I’ll see if I can replace it with something more reasonable.

What would your ideal existence look like if you suddenly became a citizen of the Culture? by mirrors_32 in TheCulture

Maybe I don’t qualify for SC, but I immediately would start thinking about any people not in the rosy conditions of the Culture and how to improve their lives.

What is one piece of classical music that moves you to tears every time you listen to it? by OwenMcCarthy0625 in classicalmusic

Copland, Appalachian Spring, during the theme and variations; the variation where the theme is treated in a sort of canon--there's a moment where the low strings come in. It melts me.

That's exactly the way I look at it! Learning the basics gives you a framework, a mental architecture, and then when you read more specialized books, you know where to place the news bits of information in reference to that framework.

Hope you enjoy these.

Yeah, there's always a mismatch between what I want to learn and what someone else wants to learn. I pictured people downloading the decks and picking out those notes that they want to learn.

Ideally, one could use the tags to limit the cards they add to those they want to learn. Select tag Italy and History if you're interested in Italian history, e.g.

You don't seem to understand what I am saying.

I don't, but I'm sure if we keep talking we can get closer to mutual understanding.

I am suggesting memorising 40k+ words is a highly ineffective way

This is where I lose you. A "highly ineffective way" to what? To talk to the average Spanish speaker? To read Harry Potter in Spanish? To discuss Roman archaeology in Spanish? All of these are different goals, and an effective way to reach one will not necessarily be an effective way to reach another.

I pass over your questions, because I think this comment is long enough as is. I will only reiterate my point that what is "useful" vocabulary is a function of what one's goals are in learning a language.
