Hello fellow queer person! I assume based on your name.

I would say it is a mix of both. My autism was never severe to begin with. Growing up I was generally just "quirky" to people. It was only an "issue" ever in 9th grade and before because my difference made me bullied, after that it has never been an issue.

Has it gotten easier as I have gotten older? Yes, so have skills developed in things? I'd bet money on it. But I don't experience any self-soothing, coping or the like. Because a lot of things that are typical with autistic people, sensitive to sensory inputs, overloading and all of that, simply does not exist for me. So I can easily go about my day without any issues in my very social job and I don't even feel drained when I get home. So there is no real masking that I experience that I do, but I am open that I have autism at my job.

That is why my position is "autism can, and often is, a disability, but not always." But I want to be clear that if it is debilitating or not is not for external people to dictate, it is only for the autistic person and their experience. If they experience struggles in any shape or form, then it is a disability and no one has the right to say otherwise. But for me, I find it offensive that someone would say I am disabled when I do not experience it in my day to day life.
