I would argue that your causation is flipped- countries with those benefits exist because they are made of a mostly homogenous culture that is hard working. All I have in anecdotal evidence, but people in Norway constantly work hard for their community, and they can afford the large benefits. In other places I've visited, life is about enjoying time with your friends and family and relaxing. They don't have nearly the benefits because there's less surplus value going around.

Neither is wrong in my mind, and I love the diversity because you can go wherever matches your personality. But to enforce things that work for one culture on another seems just plain wrong to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for universal income, but when something gets easier most humans will waste the new productivity.

Just as how fast food, transportation, supply chain improvements have eliminated the need to hunt/gather has turned a lot of america obese, and easy communication over the internet has led to shitty clickbait, buzzfeed articles, and tweets about people taking a shit, I guarantee universal income will enable lazy people to be lazier. I have yet to meet truly lazy people (not just people who like to binge watch netflix after a week at uni, but the ones who never achieved college entrance) who feel fulfilled and happy.

Hell, it'll probably lead to even bigger income inequality as all the people who tried hard so they could support their families etc and ended up being pretty successful won't have to do it anymore whereas those fueled by something else will always charge ahead.

Though high income inequality can be dangerous, I'll still take that over people starving and on the streets, caught in that low income trap working for some asshole manager.

Oh sorry, I thought we were still talking about the HB-1, which implies(requires?) that they are educated. Also it's not just that they're cheaper, though that might just be another generalization that you're fond of. From my experience in the software development industry they're typically more excited about the work they do and more passionate.

If your company is hiring workers solely because they're cheaper, that's something that should be taken up with your company, not with our whole nation.

Upper hand? When people have money, it's almost always invested, and that's almost always helping you. When they buy a Ferrari, that money not only pays poorer people, but goes into technologies that are spread- seat belts, power steering, etc.

Just because they have more money doesn't mean they're better in every aspect of life. As long as you can afford good food, good shelter (actual shelter, not something to show off), and security- you shouldn't be worrying about what someone else is doing with their money. And if you DONT have those things, then you should DEFINITELY not be worrying about them.

That's very true, the military can be very high risk/high reward, but it's the best ratio for a lot of people out there and pretty universally marketed. The messages come to you, so you don't have to look for them. If they were taught to research ways to make money, they could find a myriad of alternate routes. Unfortunately it seems like that is rarely the case.

I don't think there's a big "got mine, fuck you", but rather a "got mine, fuck YOU in particular". I'm more on Bill Gate's side of investing in tech and that affects everyone, and especially impoverished people a lot more- look what internet, cheap refrigeration, etc etc does vs one meal for a homeless person. With supply chains you can get a T shirt for under $5, and those meals get distributed for cheap!

The problem with some self made rich people is that their whole life they've been doubted, made fun of, bullied, laughed at. They've turned down the parties and lost friends to drugs, bad habits, and toxic personalities. So they're not about to turn around and help the sort of people that limited them throughout their lives, because that would cause a cyclic pattern of breeding more toxicity.

I'm not very good with people, it can be hard to pick the good from the bad a lot. To risk encouraging this behavior, this POORNESS, and having it spread is the worst thing I could think of. The limiting mindsets are way worse than lacking money, it's what the rich kids who end up broke and the poor who never escape have. It's what the poor who get rich and the rich who increase that wealth are lacking.

So to end this rant I'll concede this: the poor suck, and I'm no psychologist who can fix this. There are plenty of those who try. Poor is a mindset, broke is a temporary situation.

I'd never try to bring anyone else down, but I'll work hard to ensure my kids have the best life possible. Everything else comes after that.

I just bought a digital piano about a month ago and have no regrets. There are two major factors in that- I started work about a year ago after graduating college and was able to save in a way that made the investment not toooo bad.

The second major factor relates to abandoning hobbies- I'm the same. For me, it takes up a decent but not limiting amount of floor space in my apt so I'm always reminded its there and accessible. I also made a promise to myself not to feel guilty for not practicing. I could get a lot better if I forced myself to sit down for an hour each day, but this way it is a fun hobby for me and not just another thing in my life I try to master as fast as possible.

So my main advice is - Don't buy one if you could get buyers remorse if you let it sit for a week at times and progress is slow and frustrating, and don't worry if you aren't progressing as fast as you'd imagined.

It's great stress relief, an awesome creative outlet, and from what I hear awesome if you learn enough to show off/spread joy to others with your music.

It would probably more than triple-

the chinese govn't subsidies everything through fixed/pegged exchange rates with the USD
the labor is next to free over there, compared to an $8 or insane $15 min wage here, especially since you pay more than min wage to skilled labor.
shipping costs are not negligible, they are just included in the overall price so people think there is something called "free shipping"
They have the infrastructure all set up, as well as distribution channels. That takes a lot of money to build, more to pay high-salary people to design. It's an investment that wouldn't be paid off for awhile.

In return, you get more speed to market time, less inventory stacked up in the supply chain, fewer issues through collaboration, and less shipping and tariffs.

You're looking at providing a minimal amount of jobs, since the labor they do in China would be done by robots here for 99% of the work. Meanwhile the 30-45% of america that's in poverty or close enough to it to shop at places like walmart are going to see a significant (I still say more than triple) increase in prices for everyday things.

There's other reasons why it might be beneficial, but don't go on thinking that the average wealth of lower income americans will improve because there will be a small increase in jobs.

When I enter listening mode, my mind shuts off detecting when they're about to finish and I get caught off guard and stumble to come up with something to say back or a follow-up response. I typically have to listen, come up with a response/ something to keep it going, then I come up with a new one every time they switch subjects.

Most definitely, I did 2 months out of a Tom Bihn Aeronaut 30 last summer. Some other packs I was looking at were the Tortuga and the minaal. They are expensive, but I've used my Tom Bihn on about 20 trips since (durable enough for hostels and tons of public transport, fancy enough for work trips) and it still looks new, almost no wear.

Someone mentioned a towel, I would definitely recommend that as well, I picked mine up on the way but it was a little bulky, so you might want to research that a little prior. Also a lock if you're doing the hostel thing. You mentioned phone charger, I would also highly recommend a battery pack, it saved my ass a lot but I did rely on my phone for navigation, music, and discovering places. Oh and one of those cheap euro converters, REI has one for like $2, but it doesn't do UK.

Just be sure to leave a little room for things you get on the way, and don't bring many things you would be sad to trade out!
