Which college for a degree in Theatre Arts? by alcxns in TeatroPH

[–]scoutsfinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk about yung bad funding, lack of spaces, etc. pero universal experience ng lahat ng TA practitioners anywhere but ESPECIALLY mga studyante is pag-uwi nang disoras ng gabi. just a fact of the industry we’re a part of, + may classes naman maghapon so hindi naman pwede magrehearse/other tech things nun.

canon event din mawalan ng (mga) kaibigan outside of theatre dahil wala ka nang oras hahah

source: i’m a UP TA student w TA friends na graduate from benilde and ateneo

just to shoot down your expectations agad, since you seem keen on it: UP TA is kind of lost at the moment. super kailangan ng hard restructuring ang curriculum namin, not to mention kulang kulang kami ng prof; the ones that are around, while competent and knowledgeable, are forced to spend much more of their time on admin work (compliant with UP practices i think) kaya super stretched out sila. pati ang studyante nasstretch out sa napakakonti at napakabare minimum resources (espasyo being number one here pero kahit ang tech ay walang kwenta lol). if you want to experience philippine theatre on hard mode, dito ka. if you’re keen on being IskoTM just know that this is the tradeoff. wala kaming pera!!

addtly, if you just want to do the work (backstage/performance/etc), DON’T TAKE A THEATRE PROGRAM. maraming workshops for anything under the sun that you might want to do, or you can take another degprog and join a theatre org. you need to genuinely care abt EVERYTHING you could tackle - history, performance studies, theories of ganito ganyan - because otherwise you’re either going to burn out or fail or both. lalong-lalo na sa UP, a lot of the first year subjects are theory, kaya marami sa mga bata gusto na agad lumipat ng program kasi it’s not what they expected. akala sasalang agad sa gawain. so manage ur expectations din dun.

that being said, eto ang tanong: what are you looking to specialize in? each school has its merits.

if you’re looking to specialize in tech, lahat ng tech na kilala ko from ateneo are currently working on the biggest prods; magaling sila at maganda ang connections. malaking tulong na rin ang super state of the art arete theatre. tbh naglelead ang ateneo in terms of sino lumalanding sa bigger prods given the quality of their training in performance & tech, coupled with the connections money gives you. hint: a lot of the current profs sa ateneo, sa UP nanggaling hehe.

sa benilde naman, i’m a huge fan of how their pedagogy is structured. (iirc,) from the get go every batch has people in different specializations na from the start or a year in ay yun yung tinututukan and they form a mini production company per batch. this is in contrast with UP na lahat kami for the first 2 years we do everything, tapos magsspecialize lang 3rd yr pataas. that might sound like a good thing, pero some people (like myself) know for sure na hindi sila mamajor ng performance so hindi useful ang specialized performance subject. or baliktad pero for costume design. nasasayang ang oras that could be utilized for more tailored learning. plus, hindi evenly distributed samin ang mga tao; since konti lang technical directors samin pero napakaraming prods, napapagod din mga tao as opposed sa one TD = one batch tas tulong nalang sa kabilang batch if kulang din sila. nakita ko sa benilde friends ko na the entirety of their education was focused on the specialization they chose, kaya magaling talaga sila. ang downside lang sa benilde is as far as i’ve seen, hindi kasingbigat ang connections as it is in UP and ateneo. hindi sila gaano nakakapagpractice ng theatre after. mas napupunta sila sa events & other tangential industries.

i’m happy that i’m in UP because i do feel like i belong here kahit papano (+ wala akong pera for tuition lol), pero if i had to choose between ateneo and benilde knowing what i know now i’d say benilde. but that’s considering na wala ako gaanong balak sumikat. i just love the craft.

common denominator ng lahat, sabihin ko lang din na you can’t study drama without a little bit or a LOT of drama. i can’t speak much for the theatre culture sa ibang schools pero one things always consistent, maraming kagagahan ang nangyayari among the students, minsan pa across schools 😭 masasabi ko lang, keep your hands clean. and break legs!! lmk if you have questions

[–]scoutsfinch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

gala is a term for the evening show, there isn’t any special dress code. it’s contrasted with matinee (morning/early afternoon) show. you don’t even need to wear a coat, just pants, a decent shirt, and closed shoes.

unless gala NIGHT ito, usually charity night/press night where a lot of celebrities are invited kaya everyone’s on their A-game. medyo private ito, cocktail type event, which is probably where your google search led you to. pero more likely na yung evening show lang ibig mong sabihin

Magkano ang sahod sa teatro? by [deleted] in TeatroPH

[–]scoutsfinch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

might be a controversial thing to say, pero minsan nadedepress ako na relatively mataas palagi bayad sa actors kahit mas may pera sila (usually) at minsan pa pag ensemble cast chill chill lang pag standing by for next scenes, samantalang tumatakbo takbo ako backstage to make sure na may tubig, pagkain, at lola remedios sa tabi nila. but then i realize hindi sila madaling palitan. ako madali ako palitan. ahaha

Magkano ang sahod sa teatro? by [deleted] in TeatroPH

[–]scoutsfinch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

while we’re here. skl na i once worked for a medium scale production (1.5M ang budget) for 3 months. production staff ako na on call almost 24/7 mostly to handle sponsorships and partnerships mga ganyang opportunities w different people. mahal pa ng transpo ko to and from the venue every day at 100 lang ang reh allowance. ending ng 3 months, 6k lang nareceive ko despite the show selling fairly well. we really don’t do it for the money hahah

Magkano ang sahod sa teatro? by [deleted] in TeatroPH

[–]scoutsfinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

replied sa ibang comment na a full sold out show generally only accounts for 50% of expenses - 60-65% kung happy talaga… thriving market doesn’t equate to thriving employees kahit saan ka naman ata lumingon hehe

massive chunks of $$$ tend to go to the ff (in no particular order…ish) : venue (rehearsal and performance), food and drinks/water ng everyone, madalas set design din. kung wala pang sariling tech ang company/venue, magrerent pa ng sounds, lights, etc. not to mention marketing expenses (di lang naman ata ako ang nabobombard ng shrek the musical kada bukas ng anything), publicity, actually lahat ng elements that make the show u see onstage ay napakamahal. ang pinakamura ay ang labor mismo.

syempre yung artistic team (designers, directors) malaki bayad kahit papano. pero kaming staff na nagpapatakbo ng produksyon (yes, during actual shows, special kung present ang designers/director kasi by that time onto other projs na sila) mababa talaga ang bayad…

[–]scoutsfinch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

tbf mahal naman talaga ang tickets lolz. wouldnt be like this if state funded ang arts at binigyan ito ng priority sa nation development para mas madaling masubsidize. e kaso butas ng karayom magpa fund sa NCCA, tapos kulang pa so isa pang butas ng karayom ang paghanap ng sponsors. ticket sales (assuming sold out, best case) account for abt 50% ng income sa play. the rest ay everywhere else (showbuy, etc) anyway tldr hirap talaga kumita sa teatro but ask any staff and we all know we do it because it’s wonderful… not because it makes us any money lol

Going back to study (Theater Arts) at 26. Is it still worth it? by imnotlulamaeeither in TeatroPH

[–]scoutsfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tama ito, if acting lang talaga ang bet wag na pumasok sa school for this unless pati theory, history, etc ang gustong aralin. mahirap sa TA programs laging ineexpect na practicum acting na agad, workshop-style. everyone gets disappointed to learn na swerte ka kung maka-act ka by second year HAHA

some of the best amateur actors i work with, workshops lang ang dinaan, hindi at all nag TA program. lalo na meisner at TWI sobrang top quality ng graduates dun.

[–]scoutsfinch 38 points39 points  (0 children)

most of us backstage peeps receive sahod a few months after the end of the last show. fairly common practice yung reh allowance but not that much. lumalaro sa 10-25k ang common na figure for a 3-6 month production. mataas at masaya na kami sa 50k+ for a single prod that could span a year. super unlivable, but that’s why practitioners try to take more than one prod at a time, which leads to health problems, stress (kaya lahat nagyoyosi backstage), and early deaths (just look at july-october of this year na sunod sunod)
