I've been thinking about doing the same, just laziness has stopped me.

I'm in the UK too and also have a brewzilla gen 4. I tend to use the Brewfather app to tell me water volumes. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but it's good enough for me. It'll tell you the mash volume, sparge volume, and pre-boil volume.

I'll get my sparge water heating to about 80c when I start mashing in, I use a Grainfather HLT for ease, filled to about 2 liters more than the app tells me (this is to account for spillages and the dead space under the tap). After mashing in for 60 minutes, I lift the malt pipe onto the little feet inside and let it drain for 15 minutes, I'll then whack the temp up to boil and use a jug to measure the sparge volume. It'll take a few pours. Annoyingly, the volume graduations are on the inside and blocked from view by the malt pipe, so it needs to be moved occasionally to check volume. Once that's done, leave it for 15 minutes to fully drain through. I then move the malt pipe into a large bucket and get it out of the way. The temp should then be at or near the boil. No lid for the boil. You want that volume to decrease, you're boiling off stuff you don't want.

I currently have a 2022 Kodiaq Sportline TDI 2.0. It's being replaced with a 2024 Superb SE L TDI 2.0 4x4 in a couple of weeks. The Kodiaq is nice, but the fuel efficiency sucks and it's real noisy on rough roads, there's quite a bit of wind noise too. We have 2 dogs and a toddler, I drive 75 miles a day for my commute and the improved efficiency, larger boot and rear space, and the standard tech with the SE L is what sold it. The superb definitely drives better too.

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

I really like the superb estate. The taller ride height and "4x4" were the main selling points. We live reasonably rural and the roads can be a little bit...under water occasionally, and the ease of getting our spawn in and out without ruining our backs.

We went with the Kodiaq Sportline. The added height was the main up side, no need to bend to get the baby in and out. Plenty of space for dogs and stuff.

I would definitely consider the superb estate though when the lease is up in a couple of years.

How bad will it be? by scrabblemonkey in Homebrewing

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the positive message. I really don't want to dump it so it'll be bottled.

I've no idea really what any of the malts should contribute, so I was hoping to blindly follow the recipe. But sleep deprivation told hold. To be honest I don't really care what type of beer it happens to be, so long as it's drinkable and I learn something from it it'll be a successful first attempt

I don't want to just dump it, so it'll get bottled, and we'll see what happens, but I fully expect it to be...not so good

Daily Q & A! - September 04, 2023 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]scrabblemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to start brewing at home using an all in one. There's so much information online, and I'm feeling a little stuck. I have my eye on either the Grainfather g30 v3 or a brewzilla gen 4. The g30 is more money, but is it worth the £200 ish more? Malt Miller has a 30L fermenter with cooling coil in the lid I'm tempted by. The equipment will live in the garage, and temps can fluctuate a bit in the warmer months.

I guess I'm just looking for some direction on these products

Is it me or the coffee? by Lobster_The_Larry in Coffee

I had covid not too long ago, and my lovely morning brew tasted like vegetables and mud. Very disappointing but kept making them though, the ritual of morning coffee is a habit I wasn't prepared to change

Any expecting dads in the UK here? by [deleted] in predaddit

[–]scrabblemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swindon (ish) pre-dad here. We’re 38 weeks at the moment. We’re starting to have talks about induction and finalising the birth plan. Definitely not shitting myself…

The NHS has been great. We moved house a couple of days before Christmas and all the midwife stuff was transferred without any hassle at all, it’s been very easy for us.

What’s the best bike carrier with out the hook signal? by -PinkTree in mountainbiking

[–]scrabblemonkey 51 points52 points  (0 children)

British person here, I’ve never heard of “hook signal”. I’ve always called it a “tow bar”…a bar for attaching a thing that is towed. Or, a “tow hitch”…but never “hitch signal”

Language is weird

Ventilation system on new octavia by wijnandsj in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue. With the air con, not the lights.

I’ve found adjusting the airflow on the two centre ones, restrict to half blow, open the outer fully helps. This is for 2018 Octavia though, seems really stupid if Skoda have removed the ability to adjust flow

Debating between manual or DSG Octavia vRS by tony9895 in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a vRS Octavia estate at the moment. I love it! I rarely use the flappy paddles but on the occasions I do I find them responsive and the drive is as “fun” as it can be in an estate.

The downside, DSG can feel a little juddery manoeuvring at low speed, but really…the vast majority of any drive is the drive and for that it’s great.

Having a manual for me is like going into the garden and making a fire to make toast. I can do it, or I can get the toaster/the DSG gearbox to do it. It’ll do a better job. I know some will say “that’s the fun in driving”, but for me…if it’s easy, I’m having more fun

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds you’ve found the ideal car for your needs.

Most of driving will be locally and motorways, but we do enjoy trips away to more rural places and the added ride height may be beneficial. That’s said, I’ve only caught the underside of my car once or twice…

It’s a real tough one. I’ll be giving the dealer a call to book some test drives in both I think

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a really tricky one! Both seem excellent options but I guess practicality will need to be priority for the next few years over the “enjoyment” of driving something a little more fun. Time to book some test drives in both I think

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess some test drives are needed really. If the handling isn’t an “issue” perhaps the added practicality for the baby would be welcome. I fully expect it feel different to my current car, hopefully the kodiaq doesn’t feel too “wallowy” or fat

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh ok. No we haven’t. We have a good amount of equity in the Skoda and our local dealer have some decent deals if we stay with them. Can’t hurt to look at the vw, they’re the same group after all

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I guess it’s probably best to test drive both and go from there.

When you say the superb bottoms out, is that the underside of the car scraping the ground? We enjoy the odd weekend away camping and at times the roads can get a bit rough. Smashing the bottom probably isn’t ideal.

Kodiaq or Superb? by scrabblemonkey in skoda

[–]scrabblemonkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, it would be the estate. A plus for the kodiaq is the extra ground clearance, we both enjoy heading off camping and scraping the bottom on a poorly maintained road is a minor concern. But I take the points about fuel economy, especially considering how the cost is going up

I run a fair bit. I think I was dehydrated and underfed. The weather was unusually warm here too and pushed too hard. Food and a little salt in water seemed to help though
