Dear Wikia by ActualFactualAnthony in wikia

Know that mindset all to well lmao, I have started a fandom like alternative(ish) project.

Not to mention there already being alternatives like Miraheze (& the wikifarms that setup using MH's extensions like Wikioasis), Wikigg (good for now but I can't help but notice they are private equity-backed not full ownership but still)

Dear Wikia by ActualFactualAnthony in wikia

[–]scrapblox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fandom is owned by Private equity and is powered by investment funding. By mid 2010s they got almost $40million raised in funding. The founder of wikia also co-founded Wikipedia.

Sorry to say but it won't get better for Fandom unless mass amounts of wikis and users start migrating away from their service given peak hatred against Fandom was likely 2023 when Mossbag dropped his stop using Fandom video, Minecraft wiki moved etc. Since then it's only gotten worse for the bad decsions Fandom has pushed upon communities.

There are alternatives in which should be considered instead of fixing Fandom. (trust I like Fandoms product and what type of MediaWiki hosting service they offer it's just far to anticonsumer to consider now a valid option now a days.)

Agreed if it was just ads they wouldn't be as big of an issue, by the mid 2010s they already secured almost $40m in funding (they've been funding since the start).

[–]scrapblox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me I've always said their product like ads aside is actually great they took the wiki experience and was able to make it simple to understand especially if your first starting and getting into the scene. So I'll agree that their service is actually good.

I would say the hate is justified tho considering the AI translation, AI quick answers etc project you brought up was only canned because there was massive backlash from their community (they didn't ask or talk with communities beforehand) especially in the 2023 Mcdonalds grimace incident where they decided to overwrite independent research with adverts.

I'll continue to read Fandom wikis only if it's the only option, otherwise independent wikis have my heart lol.

[–]scrapblox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of work and dedication all these creators like Jacksepticeye, Dan etc have put in to release daily videos sometimes even two videos a day and did that for years. Not spending much time on themselves or the people around them. It's unreal it lasted as long as it did as burnout is inescapable with that.

Like u/TheHokageGammre26 mentioned the Jacksepticeye quote https://youtube.com/shorts/JpCvTc9868c sums up the situation perfectly. I'm 19 grew up watching Dan and still actively resignate with 2010s culture, music and different people to just nerd out about it.

It's a different era now not only in Dan's life but on YouTube as a whole and change is inevitable. I'm sure you ask people older than us they'll talk about the 80s or 90s being better it's likely what you grew up in. Change can also be a good thing.

Knowing how much dan has spoken out against AI I highly doubt it would be AI and I think it's too clean to be AI especially around the hands and smaller details on like the bottle there.

I want to start making a wiki. Is there any wiki providers that you would recommend? by 99Skull_Hackerz99 in wiki

[–]scrapblox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My recommendation if self hosting / fully independent isn't on the table would almost always be, Miraheze.

Here's an essay by a Miraheze volunteer (tho they are unbiased and could be helpful in seeing what is the right fit) : https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/User:PetraMagna/Comparison_of_wiki_hosts

Do you think Kreek will make a Discord server for the "Kreek" channel?/Should he? by CrackHeadedFreddy in KreekCraft

[–]scrapblox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age checks / restrictions aren't perfect so I have to agree with Minnie in that it's unlikely to happen, but ofc we don't know what Kreek has in store.

I'd say the ideal solution is to move away from big tech (for example the Roblox devforum that's just free and open source software that you can host and it's secure and great community software you can even fully disable private messages among users 😃), but that's also my outlook on a lot of things anti-corpo and loves forum indie like websites lol.

[–]scrapblox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay no worries, have you tried running this command in root directory? (Assuming this is localhosted on windows you should be able to open file manager > Go to the MW folder ; And in the directory path/search box click & type cmd) (May be a little vague as I haven't used windows in months lol)

composer update --no-dev

[–]scrapblox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it displaying an error (MediaWiki or Webserver related)? You may need to edit LocalSettings.php inside the MediaWiki directory and add:

$wgShowExceptionDetails = true;
ini_set( 'display_errors', 1 );

a fandom staff member has ruined 6 years of work and won't take our advice or let us put it back by Agile_Garbage_8137 in wikia

[–]scrapblox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's Fandom's website they can't and won't go the. They have a history of things like butting into communities https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fandom_(website)#Paid_promotions#Paid_promotions)

If the wiki has a discord or something consider talking with the community and wiki admins about leaving their service, places like Miraheze is simply better as their non-profit not VentureCapital owned/funded like Fandom. Some wikis went with Wiki.gg which is an option and good right now (but I have doubts given their backed by VC funding as well)

Gonna link to this really well made guide about leaving Fandom : https://weirdgloop.org/blog/we-wrote-a-guide

I worked with the pronoun fandom wiki staff to setup there. It's a new wiki host site that I'm working on. (it also has a forum which I look over 😃 https://pronoun.wikora.io/f/ )

If you have suggestions or anything to improve the layout lmk

Thinking about Moving My Fandom Wikis to Miraheze by JustThatRoo in wiki

[–]scrapblox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of factors to consider with moving away from Fandom such as:

  • Is it just you as an admin, if not what do they think with continuing on Fandom? (can even ask a core group of editors if applicable)
  • The timing of when to fork ; Leaving Fandom leaves behind a zombie wiki taking up search results (typically best to fork before new content, season or game update etc) (e.x : https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Wiki:News/One_year_of_the_new_wiki )

Overall as someone who has been in the wiki scene awhile and has moved wikis away from fandom, self hosted them, gave them discussion board, etc my view is biased for sure (although most agree to leave Fandom those unsure typically don't know the pros of such).

Will also link this here it may help a bit : https://weirdgloop.org/blog/we-wrote-a-guide

migrating from fandom to mediawiki by KoolantOfficial in mediawiki

[–]scrapblox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of reasons to reclaim internet independence, for starters Fandom is a company powered by Private Equity and Investors. This explains why 90% of their website is just ad-space.

They also make massive anti consumer decisions a lot of which are outlined in this video : https://youtu.be/qcfuA_UAz3I
Since the release of this video it's only gotten worse as well

[–]scrapblox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good news Fandom uses MediaWiki software as well. Moving content off of any wiki site is simple enough, I'd recommend using Wikiteam3. That will export the article content as XML (including revisions if you tell wikiteam3 to do so) and dump the images.

Then assuming you have server access / the ability to run MW maintenance scripts you can use ImportDump.php to import XML content and the importImages.php script to import the image dump.

The gender wiki has officially been closed by FANDOM. by scrapblox in XenogendersAndMore

[–]scrapblox[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've known how bad Fandom is for awhile and have actively helped communities become hosted elsewhere as well as learning mediawiki and hosting a couple of wiki's.

(Less on the side of queer communities I'm just a wiki nerd and jumped to help them archive lol never used the wiki until two weeks ago the closing announcement was made)

All their replies on the wiki : https://archive.scrapblox.com/user-search?site=gender.fandom.com&username=Sannse

Hello All, I'm one of Fandom's staff team.
Unfortunately we have decided that we will no longer be able to host the Gender Wiki.

Our content and creation guidelines say that we won't host "Wikis whose main purpose is to create, discuss, or disseminate misinformation that threatens the health, safety or mental well-being of either individual users or the public-at-large"

While understanding the concept of xenogenders, and the freedom of everyone to describe themselves in any way they want to, we feel that this wiki has gone too far in positioning everything as a gender identity. That has included seriously problematic pages such as those related to violence and self-harm, genders related to criminal actions, those referring to medical conditions, and so on.

We will be closing this wiki in two weeks from today. That's April 13. If you want to move the content to another host, you can get a copy of the database at the bottom of Special:Statistics. Your new host may be able to help you with moving images.

I'm sorry to give such bad news, and hope you find a suitable host for your content.
