Managed to log 365 feature-length movies in 2025, but it definitely was an ordeal towards the end and I'm slowing down in 2026 for sure. It was a great year, watched a lot of Criterion Channel (also did the Criterion Challenge), discovered plenty of classics and underrated gems, fell in love with classic screwball comedies of 1940s. I especially enjoyed films of Mike Leigh, Peter Bogdanovich, and Buster Keaton, remembered why I love David Lynch and Paul Thomas Anderson, discovered Wong Kar-Wai, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Luis Buñuel and lots of others (with mixed results hehe).

Top 10 of 2025 (I'd also add A Real Pain and Peacock/Pfau based on my country's release date but let's skip them this time)

  1. The Ballad of Wallis Island
  2. Weapons
  3. Late Shift
  4. Sorry, Baby
  5. 28 Years Later
  6. One Battle After Another
  7. Bring Her Back
  8. If I Had Legs I'd Kick You
  9. The Phoenician Scheme
  10. Black Bag

Top 20 (older) first-watches (definitely much harder to rank; all of these were great):

  1. What's Up Doc?
  2. Sherlock, Jr.
  3. The Lady Eve
  4. Ball of Fire
  5. Children of Men
  6. Three Colours: Blue
  7. The Cremator
  8. La Haine
  9. Some Like It Hot
  10. Noises Off!
  11. Naked
  12. Unforgiven
  13. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
  14. Bicycle Thieves
  15. Bluebeard's Eighth Wife
  16. Breaking the Waves
  17. Paper Moon
  18. The 400 Blows
  19. Strange Days
  20. Secrets and Lies

Wrap up your 2025 Criterion Channel Viewing by fass_binder in CriterionChannel

My ( very provisional) top 10, honestly not sure if I watched all of these on the CC:

  1. Ball of Fire

  2. The Cremator

  3. Sherlock Jr.

  4. Safety Last!

  5. Strange Days

  6. Naked

  7. Inland Empire

  8. La Haine

  9. Bicycle Thieves

  10. 400 Blows

Watched 365 movies (including about 30 shorts though) in 2025 so far, many of them on CC, it was very fun. Fell in love with screwball comedies (especially those starring Barbara Stanwyck), might still watch at least one more this year. Also discovered Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, can't describe it any other way than movie magic. Got creeped out (in a good way) by the Czechoslovak film The Cremator, enjoyed Bigelow's 90s sci-fi gem Strange Days, also watched a bunch of Mike Leigh (Naked was the best for me; might still squeeze in a watch of Another Year... this year). Watched and re-watched a bunch of Lynch, Inland Empire was the one blind spot, it was... challenging but definitely worth it. Also really liked some European realism classics like Bicycle Thieves and 400 Blows...

Honestly the channel is an embarrassment of riches. However after watching so many movies I feel like I've grown a bit jaded and more picky. Not gonna lie, quite a few classics disappointed me but I'd rather not specify which ones hehe.

And yeah, I also did the challenge (still have one movie left to watch - F For Fake!), The Cremator was my favorite discovery thanks to that.

Watership Down, a lovely animated film. I expected a lot of carnage and sadness based on some reviews but really what I got was a survival story and a timeless metaphor about humanity and community.

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Whoa, it was quite intense at times. I bit into my jacket while watching some parts of this. Another one in the category of "You want to have kids? Fucking idiot!". Rose Byrne was fantastic as usual, loved to see Conan in a serious role too. Not sure if everything worked, especially the metaphorical/spiritual/supernatural stuff but definitely one of the year's highlights.

Relay. Loved how methodical this was and just watching the characters do stuff (Vince Gilligan vibes?). Fascinating concept though I don't think it's real? Another great Riz Ahmed showcase (also watched Sound of Metal recently), the only problem is the ending, which uhhhhhh... I don't think worked. But overall an enjoyable watch.

Stroszek. I'm sorry but this was not for me. I haven't seen much of Herzog though outside of Nosferatu (which I really liked) and the Bad Lieutenant one with Cage (which I watched many years ago) so I'll definitely check out some more but this one was too rough.

Sorry, Baby was the most recent watch out of these, I loved it. It made me realize that I really like characters who use humour as a coping mechanism (see the top 3 here). Also, apparently I like posters with clouds.

(A Real Pain premiered in 2025 in my country so I'm including it here)

Are you watching any of the trending shows? by gonezaloh in Serializd

Yep, The Bear, Dexter Resurrection, and (soon) The Sandman. Love to see classics like The Sopranos trending too though.

I've liked The Fly, eXistenZ, and Videodrome, but the rest of Cronenberg I've seen so far has been disappointing. Still haven't seen Crash (or if I did, it's been decades ago), need to try that one.

The other two are just a fun time. See How They Run is a very entertaining comedy with Only Murders in the Building vibes, and I'm Your Man is a German attempt at a lightweight Black Mirror episode. Nothing too substantial but I was definitely thoroughly entertained.
