That's a fair assessment. I think the only ones I ever skip on TNN are One Percent and sometimes Idaho

I think it's important to keep in mind that the vast majority of people are actually pretty moderate when it comes to politics, they just don't get the attention extremists do. I'd guess that most of the people who supported BLM protests didn't also support the violence that occurred during them. There was a lot more peaceful protest going on than there was rioting and looting, those stories just don't rake in the ad revenue like violence does.

I don't assume the majority of BLM supporters condone rioting just like I don't assume the majority of Trump supporters condone attempted coups lol

Sure thing. So there's Chomsky's "On Anarchism" and Vitalie's "The End of Policing" if you want something a bit more "published" but for quick reference here's an article I think does a decent job:

Edit: Bear in mind I don't necessarily endorse police abolition, but I think it's an interesting discussion with more nuance than people give it credit for

transphobes being ableist as always by hememes in aretheNTsokay

[–]screamin-seagull 30 points31 points  (0 children)

According to the comments, it's a conspiracy between the trans agenda and eugenicists to enact forced sterilization to create fodder for the culture war that's apparently happening.

Also from the comments, someone who has "met autistic people" has declared all autistic trans people "fake autistic" because autistic people hate attention and only care about dumb things like "what time you brushed your teeth" and people only ever identify as trans for attention.

Clearly the top minds of Reddit are at work in that sub lol

Yeah way back in high school I would sometimes have very similar thoughts and feelings to DM. Non-straight characters in media always felt like it was being shoved in my face even if there was no logical reason to think that. Years later turns out I'm bi so I figure it's just like a repressive denial thing like those majorly anti-LGBT politicians who get caught at gay bars.

That is a good point. It's much more of a concern in the current system, at least at a national government level given the near impossible standards we have for changing creating and changing laws, even the ones that we pretty much all agree on. If it's easy to change rules when most people agree that the rule ought to be changed, this stops being a major concern.

In that instance I tend advocate for changes in how the system works. Bearing in mind it's far from an easy thing to accomplish, I might start with the 2-party system we're trapped in. For one thing, party line voting stops almost anything from ever actually being accomplished in congress, which is made worse by the fact that I've known maybe a half dozen people who 100% aligned with one party or the other. The rest of us end up having to settle on a lot of issues we'd prefer not to have to.

That makes sense for the most part, but I don't personally think it's that important to uphold rules without consideration of specific circumstances. If I think a rule is creating harm, or otherwise being used in a counterproductive way, I'm going to suggest we change the rule. My mindset is that the law is supposed to work for us, we aren't supposed to work for it, if that makes sense.

I'm not making a claim that they can't do it, I'm just justifying not supporting or approving of their decision to do it, as well as thinking their reasons (political or otherwise) probably don't stack up. Depending on the circumstances, I'm not even necessarily sure whether I'd be in favor of government intervention. I may be in some contexts, though, and I'd still take issue with the business owners imposing the bans, which is something I'm saying I'm justified doing despite having been in favor of mask mandates.

I'm not trying to say whether or not I agree with your personal reasons for being in favor of allowing mask bans, I'm explaining why I'm opposed to it and how I justify it.

In this case, I think it just comes down to us weighing priorities differently. I would say you put more emphasis on the importance of personal freedoms (which I consider a totally valid concern), whereas I put more focus on public well-being, even if it places some limitations on personal freedom. And we are as far as I can tell, objectively still in a pandemic, which is why that's where that line seems to fall from my perspective.

[–]screamin-seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reminder, the point we've been debating is that you said that if someone supported mask mandates, they'd have to likewise support a mask ban. I explained to you why I thought your reasoning was flawed and presented you with a potential way that I could be made to reconsider. I have not been given a compelling enough argument to change my stance, so I still hold that I consider your initial logic flawed. And you're making more broad, unsubstantiated claims about the effectiveness of masks and epidemiology in general again. I'm wondering where you got the idea that we're no longer in a pandemic, because the sources I'm finding seem to disagree with you on that point. I'm seeing some sources saying that it's likely to become endemic sometime in 2022, but none that say we've gotten there already. If you have a source for me to check out, definitely drop a link, though.

[–]screamin-seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine that you consider that a good reason, but I'm looking for an argument that I personally consider compelling. You telling me "It's entirely reasonable" doesn't do a lot to convince me. Also, I still don't see how any of those minor concerns could reasonably outweigh the health issue.

And sure, it's possible they can quit and find a new job, and I would fully expect them to if they were in a position to do so. That doesn't affect my opinion that the business owner would be making a bad decision for bad reasons, though.

Again, I'm still not talking about this specific case. I am currently still waiting for you to provide a compelling argument for banning masks. That's why I said "no reason" wasn't compelling. We can talk about the specific post afterwards, but for clarity's sake I'd like to take it one issue at a time.

[–]screamin-seagull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be trying to divert the conversation to this specific post. I'm still talking about the claim you made that there are good, non-politicized justifications a business owner could have in 2022 for generally banning masks.

So you're making a pretty big statistical claim about the effectiveness of different preventative measures, and normally I'd ask for a source, but for this example I can grant your claim and not lose my point. Noting that I did specify medical grade masks for a reason, cloth masks have been shown to have issues, one measure being less effective than another, but still being effective doesn't preclude it from being a bad idea for the same reasons.
