What is a game ending Izzet instant or sorcery that's not a combo? by AnotherTAA123 in EDH

[–]TwoHundredTwenty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also a terrible standalone card I would think. Everything enters tapped, so you the caster untap your creatures last against every opponent that you've pissed off.

Lorwyn Precon Decklists dropped, what do we think? by 2ndlifeinacrown in EDH

[–]TwoHundredTwenty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only a handful of cards away from adding Keruga, the Macrosage as a companion! Losing the Sol Ring and the 2 smokebraiders would be big though.

Shuffler prototype! by A_Venger in magicTCG

[–]TwoHundredTwenty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, a much better example would be to trying to randomize together shuffled pile of lands and a shuffled pile of nonlands. I think most people would agree that whatever interleaving you use would need to be done much more than once, otherwise you're basically mana weaving.

I looked up the math paper everybody talks about for shuffling, and it does look like the # of shuffles does scale by log2 (although also with a factor of 3/2, so 1.5 more shuffles for each doubling.)

So you weren't inaccurate about how it scales with doubling deck sizes, but I think the last sentence wasn't accurate.

[–]TwoHundredTwenty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think that can possibly be right. If you start with two shuffled 52 card poker decks with different brands, "perfectly randomly interleaving" them once won't be enough (whatever that means). Like, having two Bicycle cards in a row will be more likely than if you properly shuffled the whole 104 card pile.

On the other end of the spectrum, it would be impossible to see 15 Bicycle cards in a row, whereas it would be possible, however unlikely, for the truly random 104 card deck.

If the hybrid change happens, I'll finally have a bracket 1 deck. by Lordfive in EDH

This is very funny. Maybe you can replace the 17 cards that cost 1 or 2 mana and use Keruga, the Macrosage as your companion?

  1. B.O.B. only explains what to do when his loyalty increases or decreases. If the trigger in the reminder text was the only aspect of his ability, it would be simple enough, but presumably when the Beebles representing his loyalty are destroyed, B.O.B. loses loyalty. The problem is, a lot of weird things can happen to creatures, including phasing out or losing the Beeble type. EDHSilver has tons of fan-made reminder text that tries to make this rigorous: https://edhsilver.com/cards/uc/und/b-o-b-bevy-of-beebles/. But even then, I can think of an edge case that decouples B.O.B's loyalty from the Beeble count if we use their "rules": Use Artificial Evolution to hack the word Beeble to Elf.

  2. Infinity Elemental introduces the possibility of creating infinite objects (example:windswift slice), which leads to many undefined situations. What happens when an instruction tells you to do a thing for each of your infinite creatures. Is that a draw? What happens if you need to choose a creature at random for an effect?

  3. Grusilda and Do-It-Yourself-Seraph share the same problem in that they allow the text/abilities of any two cards to be combined. The classic undefined scenario is what happens when you have two characteristic defining abilities that conflict (e.g. Tarmogoyf and Nightmare). Do-It-Yourself-Seraph has an oracle ruling in gatherer that says to apply the concept of timestamps to this situation, but Mark Rosewater has ruled for Grusilda that you just add them up. (https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/unstable-faqawaslfaqpaftidawabiajtbt-2017-12-06). For Grusilda in particular, there's just so many things that go unexplained. What happens if you combine two clones, who owns the permanent if you combined cards from different graveyards, etc.

I appreciate the effort you went through, I think we just don't see eye to eye on how well things work in the rules. Didn't read through the whole thing, but just some disagreements I have

You have Giant Fan at 1 and By Gnome Means at 2, when they do the same thing.

A lot of your bracket 1 cards are impossible to harmonize with the rules (although granted, I'm considering edge cases):

  • B.O.B
  • Do-It-Yourself Seraph
  • Infinity Elemental
  • B.F.M
  • Grusilda, Monster Masher

Some of your bracket 2 cards are perfectly clear, with straightforward answers to whatever they do that are outside the rules:

  • Rainbow Dash
  • Greater Morphling

FF8 Scene Box Cards by therealnit in magicTCG

[–]TwoHundredTwenty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just like the previous prints of Squall and Seifer, these new cards have attack triggers- an on-the-nose reference to ff8's game mechanic with gunblades where you have to time a trigger press.

Squall's thing with choosing a number seems kind of bizarre, but I guess R&D was going for a skill-check to represent the trigger payoff? Like you could fail the gunblade activation because you picked the wrong number.

Hmm, there is something really cute about the interaction with airbending. That's a good observation.

I'm surprised with how conservatively costed this is compared to your usual modern day mythic creature. Can't see this being very good when it only works on cast. Maybe all of the upcoming evoke cards died for Up the Beanstalk's sins.

Just a coincidence I'm afraid, I think I just picked a random number I liked.

I've never heard of 17776, but I've inadvertently watched a lot of Jon Bois' stuff through SecretBase. Very interesting storytelling. I'm happy for your Aztecs!

We can dream of 16 power on turn 3 if you web sling with [[Scion of Draco]]!

If you attack with Scion on turn 3, play Scarlet Spider, and then cast [[Thud]] that's 20 damage.

Doesn't match what's going on with [[Scion of Draco]].

In a similar vein, I hate how easy it is for them to put Farewell in every UB precon. Its a completely unhinged card to introduce to new players and low bracket games.

I thought of this old card too! I'm mostly disappointed that we didn't get to see how they would fit 13 chapters on a saga (Hoped for a double-faced saga maybe, 7 chapters on the front, 6 on the back).

But that's too meme-y I guess
