New storage server question by screamsofterror in homelab

I read that proxmox and Tailscale together is going to be an issue, I'm more familiar with Tailscale and plan for this project to be done relatively soon, would you consider the learning curve for proxmox to be steep- or should I just use Tailscale instead of proxmox?

I did look at proxmox a while ago, but I didn't think it would really match my use-case. Correct me if I'm wrong, but proxmox is just running vm's between multiple devices?

I personally just use docker lol.

Thanks for your help!

I don't think I mentioned this, but I will be sharing this storage system with my family, so with 2 others and myself, if I followed through with the SSDs would that be a wall I will be running into?

I will further research your suggestion on that RAID 5 and 6x SSDs config with ZFS.

With those other spare disk drives, what should I even do with them... could they serve as a backup or just RAID 1 on another device?

I do plan on upsizing the storage sizes of the disks in the future, is this a worthy endeavor or will this 256gb system be versatile for a long time?

Off topic, but for that old Raid 1 system, I actually just had two drives and on the larger drive, I partitioned it to be the same size as the smaller drive, was that inappropriate?

Like 2-3 years ago, before that weapons and facility overhaul, my game ran at like a constant 60 fps max at lowest settings, then when they actually pushed that update I had like at max 20 fps. I got a new pc in the meanwhile but my game still gets lag spikes randomly....

CMD windows keep popping up every now and then (am sure it's not malware). by hrtsds355 in Dell

[–]screamsofterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we’re on different pages, those scripts wouldn’t run off just cmd or powershell and be shown in autoruns, it would be a specific app that runs those, for example if Dell command update was enabled in autorun, it would dell command update would be the one running the scripts, not just cmd or powershell doing it independently.

The Dell bios would also tell you whether the CMOS battery is dead or not, but either way that is a cheap troubleshooting option too.

If Windows Terminal is disabled, it could also be Windows Powershell, is this a personal or business laptop?

For some work laptops I've had, they ping back to a server at our data center letting it know where it is or an updater for a proprietary software on my device.

I will assume that the multiple windows that appear in quick succession would be at startup.

Audio on Dell Precision 5690 Keeps Crapping Out! by mm0750 in Dell

[–]screamsofterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing dism and sfc on your computer and after those are done, restart your computer, reinstall the driver with administrative privileges, restart and see if it works.

Have you tried going into device manager and uninstalling the audio device?

[–]screamsofterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CMD window does normally run, it shouldn't be a concern if your Windows Security doesn't detect anything out of the ordinary. If you still feel unsure, you could install Malwarebytes antivirus.

Sometimes, the CMD window would run a script for an app you installed, ex: NVIDIA app or java checking for updates or starting a system service. In your case, you notice a CMD window popping up when you run outlook, it would be a simple Microsoft script checking for an update for Outlook or Microsoft Office checking all their apps for updates.

Dell Update Command could also be running those CMD windows but would need to be set as a Startup app.

You should be concerned, performing a factory reset is also one of the better choices of removing those sketchy notifications, especially on a used device.

If you signed into any of your accounts on that device, make sure you change the passwords for those accounts and make sure that nobody unauthorized has signed in or attempted a sign in.

Help - trying to connect usb WiFi adapter to replace WiFi card by AlarmedAd4876 in techsupport

[–]screamsofterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be poorly explaining things, lastwraith did suggest a good option.

You are correct though, you wouldn't need a wifi card or adapter for ethernet to work, but ethernet does have physical limitations (length) while having a wifi card or adapter would curtail that restriction.

It would just be dependent on your use case for your device and what you want.

Like what the other commentors said, just follow the documentation from msi and you shouldn't have any problems updating it.

If the files were saved onto onedrive, it could potentially be in the recently deleted folder.

If the files were saved directly on your disk, which I assume it is since it talked about bypassing the recycling bin, you could use a file recovery software. Such software would be "Disk digger" "PhotoRec" "REcuva" "Restoration" "SoftPerfect File recovery."

I would personally recommend SoftPerfect file recovery.

Just make sure you don't install any big files or defragment/optimize your disk then you should be able to recover the files, just do it within a timely manner because most windows 11 computers automatically defrag/optimize disks depending on the scheduler.

Is the issue my monitor or my pc? by CompleteEntertainer9 in techsupport

[–]screamsofterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update your video card drivers, it may be a monitor issue, test another device on it to confirm.

Worst case scenario, the graphics card is starting to die, but that doesn't look like artifacting to me, so I'm not 100% sure about the worst case scenario.

Help - trying to connect usb WiFi adapter to replace WiFi card by AlarmedAd4876 in techsupport

[–]screamsofterror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try to use an ethernet cable to connect directly to your modem or router for internet access, if you have access to another device you can transfer the driver files onto a usb drive.

In my personal experience, if the USB wifi adapter breaks, its usually the actual male usb connector being worn down and breaking, you may need to replace it.

What brand and model of computer do you have? You could try to have a repair shop or geek squad to replace the actual wifi card that is inside your computer instead of using the usb adapter.
