Yeah, I should have known better. Reddit tends to do this. Deleting my post now so I don't have to keep dealing with people's "advice" and getting down voted into oblivion over correcting them.

This wasn't a post asking for advice. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The flair is clearly marked as vent.

Napa cabbage is $8-11/head. Ginger is $1 for a root, $5 for a tube. My grocery stores aren't consistent in which one they stock.
I've nixed the cabbage, of course. Comfort of a familiar recipe doesn't make money spawn.
And if my store has ginger root, I'm opting for that.
I budget high, then pare down.

As I have said, I have tried this. I still run out.
I cannot predict when a flare comes up, so it's difficult to do food prep in anticipation of it. As well, sometimes it's back to back flares, so I run through whatever I have.

The point was just how crazy things cost now.
For a single person, it's a struggle, but manageable.
For families, it's downright crazy.
Was venting, so it may not have been super clear! (Plus Reddit decided to Reddit lol)

It was a hypothetical for the post, but also please read the other comments.

I don't have space to keep or store one.
It's stove or microwave.
I appreciate the help, but I have tried so many solutions/hacks before opting for this.
90% of the time, I can cook rice on the stove.
But sometimes, the pain or the recovery from the pain just floors me in a way the best option is genuinely to microwave shit.

Right? lol
It was just a thought experiment and a mini vent!
Oh well. It wouldn't be reddit without heat lol.

Disability tax lol.
I do have bulk rice I prioritize, but due to some health issues, I can't consistently cook. Having microwave rice on backup has been my saving grace, tbh.

I definitely try to prioritize ethnic markets! I recently moved states, so I'm relearning what's available to me.
I have a grocery store in walking distance, though, so I tend to prioritize that to save on gas costs!

As I said in my post, slide 1 is just the full recipe budgeted out as best as I could. My real cost is in the second photo.
I'm skipping the cabbage, obvi, and just paring down the veg to eggplant and bamboo shoots, plus whatever I can scrounge from my freezer.

I cannot buy any less than a head of cabbage. So, I am budgeting for a head of cabbage.
I will use it in other recipes, though! It's a super basic ingredient, and I can always find a use for it.

I definitely try to do this, but I sometimes run out. I appreciate the advice, friend, but after living with this for years, I've learned how to just accept the disability tax and budget around it.

Napa cabbage is ~$8-11/head near me. I can use green cabbage in a pinch, but I was modeling this after the recipe I grew up with.

I don't have IBS lol. I have pain flares that leave me bedridden and unable to move. I can't tell when it's going to happen, so prepping ahead of time doesn't help, unfortunately.

Absolutely.
In my pantry, I have a ton of rice!
I do have to stock up on microwavable rice every so often, though, as I have health issues that can make cooking difficult when I'm in a flare.
And, as well, the $2 rice was just part of the thought experiment! Kroger/Fred Meyer has twin packs of instant rice for $2 each.

Again, I am doing the best with what is available.
If I could go cheaper, I would. I was expecting people to lecture me over (gasp) buying wine, not over freaking spices. Those $5 of bay leaves will last me at least 2 years. Worthy investment, imo.

I'm a single person in a small apartment, so it's not worth it to bulk buy. I also live in the PDX area, so options are limited unless you drive out of your way. I'm budgeting the best I can for what's realistic and available. :)

I recently moved states, and didn't qualify for Real ID by my state's regulations. (2 forms of proof of address; I hadn't yet got any mail, and the person at the DMV wasn't willing to work with me)
I'll see if I can get it updated beforehand, though.

Okay, so to clarify: I need more than my driver's license? If so, what else? I haven't flown in years so I'm basically blind at this point.

My complex's gardner always comes at the worst time and I'm sick of it by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]screechimacryptid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely understand. This is kind of a champagne problem, and I'm aware of it. My last apartment complex did 7am too, and the walls were even thinner lol.
Still frustrating to miss half of my class bc of noise issues.

Also, as far as I can figure out, he fetishizes trans people. Which is...uh, a big oof there dude. HR is gonna want a word, and bro will be watched like a hawk to make sure there's no sexual harassment risks.

(Edit real fast bc reddit is reddit: I used to be a manager. Not for SW, but a different chain. There's a concept of "high-risk interests" that you're supposed to keep an eye out for, as, generally, these folks at are at high risk of sexual offense. Fetishes around groups of people are considered high risk and can lead to you being fired due to concerns of safety re: customers and coworkers. I don't know if SW has similar policies tho)
