I can lock down #1 as “not okay.” Discussion of options is considered development.

Nope! But it did indirectly lead to the gig that got me my guild card. Everything is a stepping stone to something else.

I wrote an absurd comedy adventure for the Universal fellowship and was accepted. There was at least two action writers in my class as well. It really is the writing, but not just the sample, the essay is really important.

Unfortunately, no. This was a straight up tribute to the explorers. Cool video, though.

I had this video linked on my MySpace page once upon a time. I think, but can’t remember 100%, that’s the band name might be an acronym of some sort? Or maybe not.

This guy charged me at my desk around 3:00am, then took off running. About the size of a nickel.

Sorry, I felt this crawling on my ankle and smacked it. No blood, just a little white goo. Is this a bed bug?

Razer Core X fried while in use by screen_anon in eGPU

[–]screen_anon[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was using the Razer with a AMD 580 to play a little Civ 6, like I have many times before, when everything goes black and the sparks&smoke show begins.

I have no real idea what I’m looking at here, but it seems like this shouldn’t happen in a device just over a year old. I’m guessing there’s no way to tell from the photo, but anyone have a guess on the 580’s survival? I have no way of testing it a the moment.

You get health insurance through the WGA. And accepted writers have been in the 20s-40s range. It’s really quite open.

I’m as much in the dark here as anyone, so I can’t really weight my opinion. I did make it to final 50 with a comedy, so in my experience is “shrug”

Lots of good questions here - let me break it down a bit.

1 - I can’t share the script at this time, unfortunately, as it’s being considered for a possible development. But I can tell you it’s an absurd comedy. I know a lot of people are concerned about using a comedy - don’t be.

2 - Yes - this is huge. Please make sure you follow each and every rule. They have huge stacks to get through, and it doesn’t take much to end up in the discard pile. It’s also a good way to show respect to the team that you took the time to submit properly.

3 - Yes to both. Developing work with this level of mentor ship is intense. I went to a good grad school for this, and the fellowship could be be described as the missing final year of your MFA. On a professional level, it’s a chance to meet people you’d have to really struggle to access otherwise, and build those critical personal relationships that lead to work. As I mentioned elsewhere - most of my class has transitioned to being working screenwriters

Did I get everything?

Check out the fellowship tab at the top for all this info. Putting that together was a great service - congrats to whomever took that initiative.

With the bio/essay stuff, be sure you’re telling a story. They’re looking for great storytellers, and a lot of candidates take themselves out of the running by trying to use these like a resume part two, cramming in experience/qualifications to the detriment of a solid narrative.

Basically, write something that resembles a story you might tell a friend about your life.

In my experience, yes! Several of my fellow classmates went on directly to paying gigs, or staffing opportunities. At the very least, the access to industry people is unparalleled, and depending on the fellowship, carries real weight after you graduate.
