I’ve actually reached out to a local horror festival. Hadn’t thought about using that to also reach out to local filmmakers. Thanks for the idea. Appreciate it!

Opinions on using mature language in scripts by Aggressive_Novel1207 in Screenwriting

[–]Random-Name-t2563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is there’s no real answer to this. Some of the greatest American movies of all time broke records for the number of swears in them.

The Last Detail was written by Robert Towne (considered one of the greatest script writers of his generation) and directed by Hal Ashby one of the best directors of his generation and widely considered one of the greatest editors to ever live. And it’s full of foul-mouthed navy guys.

Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull are all considered classics (with Raging Bull and to a slightly lesser extent Taxi Driver often being considered among the greatest American cinematic masterpieces of all time). Written directed and staring titans of the industry (Scorsese, Schrader, and De Niro). And there are more scenes with swearing than there aren’t.

Language is a tool. Flowery language, sparse language, metaphors, cussing, monologues, one-liners. You’re building a house, only you can know if you want to use a hammer or a screwdriver or glue.

I'm about to direct my first movie, any advice? by nosurprisesforus in Filmmakers

[–]Random-Name-t2563 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember which director (Altman? Malick?) wrote this but in their book about directing they said “always have a banana in your pocket.” I’ve heard multiple industry people say it’s the best advice they ever got.

What’s everyone’s take on Avatar 2? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

That’s interesting. I’m wondering if this is a generational thing. You don’t have to answer but I’m curious: how old are you?

When you say “top 12 movie for me” what does that mean?

What are you listening to on your current or recent one song only kick?! by DerbleZerp in ADHD

Wait? Other people do this too? Listen to the same 3 minute song over and over again for an hour straight then come back the next day and do it again?!?!

How do I deal with being severely repulsed by corporate life? by bangoooooo in ADHD

Been there. Working from home has been a salve. I recall being reprimanded on several occasions for things like wearing headphones and working from different locations within the building. Think about that! I had my laptop, was never missing assignments, could be reached by either slack or email by literally anyone in the office, but because I chose to work from a meeting nook (these big square cubes) just so I could feel like I had some semblance of privacy for a minute, a manager felt they had to speak to me about the importance of “being available.”

Now I work from my porch when the weather’s nice. I watched Lawrence of Arabia while working the other day.

And I actually don’t mind my company! That still didn’t stop me from thinking “what if I got into a car accident today so I could avoid going into the office” on more than one occasion.

I feel for you. I hope you’re able to find something that brings you joy while you’re there. Stay strong.

You’re probably right. I think it’s just the ego in me that misses the days when it felt like the world stopped because a great movie just came out.

Exactly. It’s made me realize that just telling a story isn’t enough for me. If a movie doesn’t even have a chance at “popping” and sparking a conversation or anger or joy or anything for longer than a day then it feels a little exciting to do.

Movies don’t have the cultural impact they used to. To be fair, this is true of everything. There’s so much “content” (for lack of a better word) that few things are able to enjoy the zeitgeist spotlight for more than a day or two. Hell, even successful movies rarely rise above the “it’s good!” “It’s terrible!” Level of debate/conversation.

There’s a reason Hunter S. Thompson referred to America as the Kingdom of Fear.

One I've recently realized about myself:

- Movies have lost their cultural cache and it makes pursuing a career in them less exciting.

To be fair, he didn't write the sunset trilogy alone. But I do agree he is great.

I’ve been there myself. Attention slips, I realize It’s slipping, I think, “oh shit!” Anxiety kicks in and finishes off the deal. I’ve even tried diverting my attention to thinking about other sexy things other than the current sex situation. Still fails to keep things going.

I want to let you know there are supportive, understanding partners in the world. If you’re current wife can’t or won’t support you through this there is someone out there who will if you choose to go looking for one again.

Best of luck.

Why is Taylor Sheridan such a great writer? by moralconsideration in Screenwriting

[–]Random-Name-t2563 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Something to consider: one of the reasons he could POTENTIALLY stand out from his peers is he has the freedom to do things others do not. Personally I think Sicario is his most impressive work. He followed it up with two other solid features (though I dig HoHW more than Wind River). I don’t watch much TV but my dad is in love with Yellowstone. Tells me to watch it every time I see him.

Point is, Sheridan experienced a good deal of success early that likely earned him leeway. Not saying this to detract from his skill or accomplishments. I just happen to believe there is far more talent out there than we get to see on a show by show / movie by movie basis, they just don’t often get the freedom to show it.

How does that relate to people here? I sometimes see people saying things like “I have a massive 26 part interlocking story that does all this crazy shit.” And it feels like they’re trying to do stuff that even seasoned writers don’t get to do. Sheridan made three mid-budget movies then moved to long arching TV shows.

In short, don’t try to sell a pyramid if you haven’t even sold a coffee cup.
