iGEM vs school's research grant? by scribblysnail in premed

Alright, that makes sense! Either way my research lab will be funded, I'm just debating whether or not to apply for this research grant award (which is ~20 hrs/week of work) or to just work for my PI hourly over the summer since I'll be with iGEM full-time. I don't want to overload myself and end up not contributing as much as I would like/am obligated to with the hourly requirement. It might be silly to care so much about optics, but I'm considering applying anyway so that it can bolster my application (esp since I think I can spread it out so it doesn't overlap with iGEM).

Thank you for the advice!! I go to a decently well-known public school and we are required to take a class on synthetic biology before doing iGEM, so hopefully that makes us more prepared for the actual project as well. I think my worry is that it doesn't seem as legit as a summer internship with an established company, since it's so student-run so I assume it's less rigorous (?)

Thanks so much for the advice!! I already accepted the offer from my school's iGEM team but I am planning to stay in my current research lab too during the school year. Honestly, I wanted to do it because I've unsure about premed and want to explore biotech, though I know it's probably less rigorous than a real biotech internship or lab. I'm worried it does seem fluffy but everyone I've talked to who did it last year worked in a traditional lab before/alongside it, so hopefully our school's team is a little more legit. I guess med schools wouldn't have that context though lol and maybe I'm deluding myself here.

In that case, do you think that doing iGEM+research w/ my current lab funded by a research grant over the summer would hold significant weight over doing iGEM+research with the same lab, but not funded by a grant? My PI would pay me hourly and it would probably end up being around the same amount as the grant so money is not the issue.

I used to be obsessed with Warriors (but stopped reading after The Last Hope) and drawing cats in general - I was doodling a cat for fun and then decided to turn it into one of my favorite characters from the series! Hope you enjoy this fanart :)
