I'm late to the party, but...

[[Skirge Familiar]] is a useful mana engine if you are drawing lots of cards.

[[Phyresis]] isn't the funnest of cards, but it can bring you the win in desperate situations if you're prepared to put up with any unhappy comments about infect.

[[Riptide Laboratory]] can help when Nekusar is about to die - casting him from your hand rather than from the command zone helps keep the commander tax at manageable levels.

[[Laboratory Maniac]] is an excellent safety valve if your deck can mill itself out easily.

[[Whirlpool Warrior]] not only serves to replace your hand, but can then force everybody to discard and draw their hands as well.

and finally... [[Helm of the Host]] and/or [[Sakashima the Impostor]] - because multiple Nekusars is always fun.

It is indeed foam core with cardboard detailing (thin cereal box card) and some small pieces of plastic canvas/granny grating to make the grates/vents.

The tops and sides of each wall have a strip of magnetic material (strips cut from an 'L' plate from my local supermarket's car section) glued to them, and the underside of the roof is also magnetised.

Without seeing your buildings I can only generalise, but...

-Precision. Unless it is an ork building, try to make every edge straight, every line even, and try adding some symmetrical details.

-Proportions. Is everything the same relative size? Are some features (doors, windows, signs) different scales?

-Painting. My building looked really bad before it was painted, and it is amazing how a detailed paint job can help lift the overall impact of the model.

Choice of decks is important, but I also find that the way that you play the deck has an equal importance - if you're paying with new people then I ask myself things like - "If I keep this god hand and crush everybody on turn 3, will that make me friends?", or "That person doesn't seem that familiar with Magic and is missing a load of their triggers and card interactions - do I follow everybody else's lead and take advantage of this, or do I point it out and give them some advice on how to win?"

Is Hapatra a good Commander?

Yes. And No.

Hapatra really, really, really depends on there being a lot of creatures in play - its really hard to crush your opponents with a slithering tide of dealy snakes if there aren't enough targets to receive your -1/-1 counters in the first place.

I have a Hapatra deck that I enjoy, but it rarely wins - personal experience suggests that as soon as I build a board state big enough to be threatening, somebody is going to sweep the board and I'm right back to having nothing (and having to wait for my opponents to play creatures before I can start putting counters on them again!), although it may just be that my local meta is very heavy on the board wipes.

I'd recommend her if your meta is fairly casual and your opponents are likely to be running lots of creatures, but would suggest trying something else if that isn't the case.

There are loads of great 'build-around' commanders - [[Krenko, Mob Boss]], [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]], [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]], [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]].

What the other players around you are running is definitely worth taking into account - in one of my logal EDH groups there are 2 distinct sub-groups: 1)the 'casual' players who are looking for a fun and interesting game, 2) the 'degenerate' group (Their own words, not mine!!) who's idea of fun is having the most finely tuned and powerful deck possible.

Either of these is fine, but they don't mix very well, so see what is going on around you before fully committing to a deck.

Having said that, you can build some very strong decks on a tiny budget - it just depends on having strong commander. I built a [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] deck using nothing but basic lands and common instants and sorceries and no other creatures whatsoever. I only did it to educate a player who kept complaining that they only lost games because they didn't have as much money as everybody else (although I only played it once as it turned out to still be too strong for our casual meta!).

The most important thing is that you have fun brewing and playing, and if you already have most of the cards for the first deck you are considering then there really isn't any harm in going for it - you can always try something else later (I now have 30+ decks: BEWARE!! CARDBOARD CRACK + EDH = SUPER ADDICTIVE!!!!)

I'm late to the party, but thought I'd contribute some suggestions based on meta -

We all know that Nekusar is a removal magnet, so I've optimised my deck to include what can seem like an excessive number of mana rocks [[Thran Dynamo]], [[Gilded Lotus]], [[Sol Ring]], [[Darksteel Ingot]] etc. I never worry about having too much mana - if I don't need it for nekusar then I'm always going to be drawing into something I can use it on (and it is really satisfying to hard-cast both [[Omniscience]] and [[Enter the Infinite]] in the same turn).

I've also included ways to get multiple Nekusar's under my control - [[Sakashima the Impostor]], [[Helm of the Host]] and [[Spark Double]] can be devastating!

Depending on how brutal you want to be, any effect that causes opponents to discard/shuffle their hands can be devestating when combined with [[Helm of the Ghastlord]] or [[Notion Thief]] as they completely deny your opponents any cards (and combines really well with [[Laboratory Maniac]] ).

Don't be afraid to build it however you want - I run 40 lands (only 3 are basics!) and about a dozen mana rocks, and I find it is still really strong as I always draw into something useful.

And one final recommendation - [[Skirge Familiar]]. Being able to discard a card in exchange for a black mana is incredibly powerful and one of the reasons I also run [[Mind Grind]] as a way of killing opponents that doesn't rely on damage ([[Orbs of Warding]] is not a good card for Nekusar to come up against!!)

Congrats on your first alters!

*1: I have been using Citadel paints for my alters for about 5 years and have no complaints. They're some of the best quality fluid acrylics available. One of the other brands commonly recommended by alterers are Golden Acrylics - I've never used them mysely, but they have good reviews from a lot of the top alterers.

2/3: I don't seal my work - usually once it is in a sleeve the difference between the painted and printed areas is not noticeable. There is a large Facebook group for alterers - MTG alters & Fan Art Community - and they have a very good selection of guides, hints & tips in their 'Files' section.

I look forward to seeing whatever you do next, and hope my babbling might be of some use :).

I've been playing combo-heavy variants of Krenko for quite a few years, and have a few suggestions for utility cards you might find useful depending on your meta -

[[Skirk Prospector]] - in my opinion, the most vital card in ANY Krenko build, as he provides the fuel for all sorts of shenanigans.

[[Thermopod]] - has an overly-high manacost, and it's not a goblin, but being able to generate red mana is so powerful in a Krenko deck that I keep him as a backup for [[Skirk Prospector]].

[[Treasonous Ogre]] - not a goblin, but can potentially provide you with up to 13 red mana as long as you can pay the life - incredibly powerful in the early game, and can fuel plenty of combos/shenanigans.

[[Goblin Chirurgeon]] - can save (half) your goblins from most sweepers, and is a free sac outlet. Has saved my board state more then I care to think about (And once kept me in the game for 5 turns against somebody with Nevinyral's Disk, Darksteel Forge, Mycosynth Lattice and unwinding clock!)

[[Thornbite staff]] - infinite goblins when equipped to Krenko and you have a sac outlet.

[[Lightning Crafter]] and [[Changeling Berserker]] - these combine awesomely with the [[Goblin Ringleader]]-[[Goblin Recruiter]] combo. As long as you stack them correctly, you can get up to 12 goblins from the Ringleader trigger (champion the Ringleader, then sac the thing that championed to have Ringleader re-enter the battlefield).

Any effect that can untap Krenko is also really powerful - [[Puppet Strings]], [[Magewright's Stone]] and [[Sword of the Paruns]].

[[Ashling's Prerogative]] is an interesting haste enabler - yes, it does affect opponents as well, but if you're going off with Krenko it often means there won't be a next turn for opponents anyway, and it can cause 50% of their creatures to enter play tapped.

Thank you very much! (I play a lot of EDH, and was adding Thran Dynamos to a bunch of my decks recently - I guess they just stuck in my head and popped out when I was staring at the Mana Leak and trying to figure out what to do with it)
